13.01.2022 YOU ASKED US... I'm wondering how many kilometres a vehicle has to travel before its star rating reduces? As vehicles get older, components become less reliable and surely that means vehicles become less safe? OUR EXPERT SAID... ANCAP tests new, unmodified vehicles in order to determine a rating for the crash protection and crash avoidance performance. Our laboratory tests are chosen to assess protection of occupants in a broad range of real-world serious crash scenarios, b...ut there will always be a variation between the laboratory conditions and real-world crash scenarios and collision partners (other vehicles). There can also be some minor variation between vehicles due to specification differences and wear & tear (once the vehicle is in use). Nevertheless, it is not expected that the safety performance of a vehicle will degrade significantly with age (unless it is damaged or modified). However, vehicle safety design and technologies have continued to improve greatly over time there is a clear case that older vehicles do not offer the same protection to occupants and other road users that newer models provide. While distance travelled tends to result in wear on moving parts such as the engine, transmission and suspension, there is little evidence of degradation of occupant protection systems (with the exception of the known Takata airbag recall).
