20.01.2022 Another lockdown Zoom meeting for ARRV. But what a GREAT session as Frances Robson shared a presentation of her archaeological experience at the Parco Archeologico Del Pausilypon site in Italy. It was very interesting and educational. And other members shared bits of treasure from their personal collections. #10thlegion #10thfretensis #ancientrome #ancientromans #ARRV #ancienthistory #LegioX #Legion #romanreenactors #romanreenactment #romanlegion #romanarmy #romanrepublic #ancientroman #spqr #romansinvictoria #anr #austnovaroma #novaroma #romanhistory #nr #romaansinvictoria #romanarchaeology

20.01.2022 GREAT to catch-up with members of the 10th Fretensis...even if it was virtual due to current restrictions in Victoria. Thank you all for joining!!

19.01.2022 Centurion Primus Pilus Marcus Claudius Calvus of Legio X Fretensis (a.k.a. Michael (Mike) Crosby), co-founder of the Ancient Roman Re-enactors Victoria (ARRV) adopting the 10th Fretensis as its representation Legion, focusing on the time period 0 to 100AD. Interests include historical representations - Greek hoplite - Roman (Centurion and Legionary) re-enactor since 1995.... - Saxon and Medieval (longbow) - Collecting Roman and medieval coins and artefacts for more than 40 years - Ancient engineering, and - Building reenactor’s equipment Mike joined U.K.’s Roma Antiqua re-enactment group in 2000 as a legionary and formed what was to become the ‘Hands on History’ group in 2003 working with disenfranchised adolescents teaching them ancient engineering and developing transferable skills by building siege equipment, Roman uniforms & weapons under licence. Representing Greek Hoplite, Roman, Viking and Saxon periods, Hands on History had a vital role in education visiting schools to teach children about the history of the Roman military, development and expansion. Our Centurion’s community support has been prolific. In brief: - Middlesbrough local council and museums (2005-2007) organising five (5) re-enactment events with around 10,000 visitors attending the last show before migrating to Australia. - Melbourne’s Ancient Hoplitikon participating in a film shoot and attended several shows including four (4) visits to Lonsdale St. Greek Festival. - Co-founder (Ancient Roman Re-enactors Victoria) - Timeline in Berwick and Ballarat - Filming an educational video on Roman history - National Museum of Australia Canberra - University of Melbourne - Mirboo North Italian festival Mike notes some of his highlights: As Centurion Primus Pilus of Legio X Fretensis, I have seen the group becoming a battle hardened legion. With the 10th Fretensis, I also attended a 3-day living history display at the National Museum of Australia’s ‘Australia Day Exhibition of Rome: City and Empire’ in Canberra in 2019 leading the assembly of 5 re-enactment groups to display Roman military marching, drills and formations. In November of 2019 ARRV presented a Roman military and living history display at the University of Melbourne to support the promotion of the University’s education program in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies with displays of Roman military marching, drills and formations and engaging with the public to explain Roman engineering and siege equipment, Roman military weapons and armour. Another recent community event of note was the ARRV’s annual display at the Mirboo North Italian festival.

18.01.2022 Member Profile WHO? Meet Aeliana Tatiana Aurelius, otherwise known as Barbara Gray, Domina and member of Australian Roman Re-enactors Victoria (ARRV) since 2017. RE-ENACTMENT - WHAT? WHEN?... The Leongatha Medieval Society Inc got Barbara interested and involved with re-enactment in 2005 when she made 14th Century Medieval garments for their members before going to other activities with the group (2006 2019). Still wanting to maintain re-enactment in medieval life and archery, Barbara decided to also form her own group known as ‘IGCOA’ (In Good Company of Archers). Between membership of ARRV and IGCOA, Barbara feels contented and enjoys all aspects of being a re-enactor and have a strong appreciation of both parts in history. WHAT? Weapon of choice? English Longbow Barb’s also has a passion for constructing garments, both civil and military. ROME - WHERE? WHEN? In 2015, with Timeline at Kryal Castle, Barbara first dressed as a Roman lady where she and ARRV Optio, Rob Serafino, decided to start a Roman Group as a duo before roving as reenactors at their first Italia Festa in 2016. WHO? Barbara and Rob met John Couzens, who had seen their photo from the Italia Festa to ask if they would like to join a Roman Reenactor’s group that he and a few other people were wanting to start. WHAT? WOW! Highlights of re-enactment so far have been: Gaining the skills and use of the English Longbow Giving time to entertain and amuse the general public Attending Timeline in 2015 as a Roman couple with Robert Serafino Being a part of ARRV where I have met such wonderful people. Roman Interests: Roman history Food and the cooking of 1st Century Rome Construction of garments Aiding the Legions with the use of the Ballista Investigating kitting-up to partake in the Legionary drills as a Veles Currently reading Ancient Roman Gardens by Linda Farrar (it’s interesting how many Roman flowers are found and grown in Australia!)
