25.01.2022 We are really excited to announce that we have started our reintroductions! We recently translocated 19 crest-tailed mulgaras to our feral predator and rabbit f...ree area in Sturt National Park. These feisty little carnivorous marsupials are a smaller relative of the Tasmanian Devil. What they lack in size, they make up for in attitude; eating insects, small reptiles and mammals. It has been great to help them to return to the Strzelecki Desert dunefields at Wild Deserts to fulfil their important ecosystem role as a micropredator. Wild Deserts would like to acknowledge the contributions of the South Australian Department for Environment and Water, SA Arid Lands Landscape Region and our neighbours on Bollards Lagoon and Lindon Stations. We look forward to keeping you updated on how they get on.

21.01.2022 JAXAs asteroid explorer, Hayabusa2, is on an asteroid sample-return mission that started on 3 December 2014, from Japans Tanegashima Space Center. The 3.5-yea...r voyage spanned nearly 3.2 billion kilometres (over 8,000 times the average distance from Earth to the moon). The explorer finally reached Ryugu asteroid on 27 June 2018. Since September 2018, Hayabusa2 has deployed one lander and two rovers to Ryugus surface to investigate the asteroid. Impressively, Hayabusa2 also completed two sample collections, on 21 February 2019 and 11 July 2019. https://www.spaceconnectonline.com.au//4495-hayabusa-2-re-

19.01.2022 With a large amount of bird calls today with heat stress from the last few days we just wanted to touch on some hot weather tips to help our wildlife. - Place... shallow dishes of water around the yard, under shade. Put a rock in the middle so insects won’t fall in. - Place buckets of water around the yard, under shade for birds to bathe in. - Put sprinklers on in the morning and afternoon for animals to cool off - Ensure you have shade (shrubs, trees etc) around your house for animals to get out of the sun If you come across an animal you believe has heat stress place then in the shade with some water and keep an eye on them. If they don’t perk up or you have any questions please call the wildlife hotline on 0497 808 315

19.01.2022 Folks, meet the elusive Kowari! First identified by western science in 1895, the Kowari once had a wide distribution through central arid Australia. It has sinc...e disappeared from the NT and from many sites in QLD and SA, and it is getting rarer. It is an ambitious predator, mostly eating insects but also small birds and their eggs, and reptiles. You can identify the Kowari from its cousins the Mulgara and Kultarr by its black, bushy, course-haired tail that is equal in length to its body. Kowaris respond to threats from predators or other kowaris by hissing and raucous chattering. When agitated they angrily wave their tail from side to side - much like a grumpy cat. 19.01.2022 Mark your diaries for these 5 astronomy events not to be missed in December It includes 2 meteor shower and one of the most spectacular space events that we’ll ...witness in our lifetime, with the ‘great conjunction’ of our biggest planets - Jupiter and Saturn.December 2 will see the early morning Phoenicid Meteor Shower.. the another early morning event on December 12 and great photo opportunity will be the close approach of Venus and the crescent Moon in the sky. Then on the morning of December 14 with no moon to be an issue is the annual Geminid Meteor Shower. December 16 gives us an evening photo opportunity when Jupiter, Saturn and the crescent Moon make close approach in the western evening sky. The we have the Super conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn on December 21 and 22 when they will appear to be so close in the sky they may look like one object to the naked eye More detail on each event closer to the date!

19.01.2022 Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Hayabusa2 is to return samples of Asteroid 1999 JU3 known as Ryugu. it is named after a dragon's underwater palace from Jap...anese folklore. In the story, a fisherman is taken to Ryugu by a turtle and returns with treasure from the ocean palace, much like Hayabusa2 from our asteroid. If all goes to plan, their impact onto the Woomera Testing Range will be a gentle one. The mission is due to land the asteroid samples on December 6 this year. Hayabusa2 is set to pass close by the Earth on December 6. It will jettison its sample return case, which will land in Woomera to be picked up by Japanese and Australian scientists. This treasure trove from Ryugu will reveal fascinating insights into the history of the Solar System, the Earth, and the beginnings of life itself. After nearing Earth to drop the capsule, Hayabusa will fire its engines to adjust course to manoeuvre past our planet and continue its exploration of the solar system. It will be the second time anybody has successfully returned a sample from an asteroid, and the first time one will be returned from an asteroid rich in water and the carbon-based building blocks of life known as organics.

17.01.2022 CREATING DURING THE COVID TIME: PART 4 BECK HANOLD, aka Beckles Freckles, lives in Andamooka, in the amazing Outback, South Australia. Beck started her art care...er with face painting. Initially, she only painted her childrens faces for Halloween and dress-ups, but it wasnt long before requests for face painting at birthday parties and other events followed. When Beckles Freckles discovered Instagram, it resulted in new friendships and collaborations with SFX make-up artists. When Beck was invited to join a small art group in Cowell, she learned that she preferred painting canvases to people. Beck experimented with a range of non-traditional art media including Hair Dye and Vegemite. Word of her stunningly beautiful Vegemite paintings soon spread around the region, leading to interviews on radio and local recognition of Becks talent. Early 2020, Beck was invited to illustrate a childrens book. Beck was hesitant as this was her first opportunity to illustrate a book project, but she took a big leap and completed eleven graphite and charcoal illustrations of South Australian animals and invertebrates (as well as six sketches for the glossary) for Barossa Nanna and the Outback Camping Adventure. She thoroughly enjoyed this new experience and is looking forward to more art opportunities of this nature. The book is scheduled to be available for Christmas. (It is not available for pre-order.) These framed, A4 landscape, gorgeous illustrations are now available for purchase from Beck via Messenger. See more

15.01.2022 Two new coins have been released by the @royalaustmint to celebrate the astronomical knowledge and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. ...They feature artworks from Wiradjuri (NSW) and Yamaji (WA) artists representing two of the most famous features in Aboriginal astronomy: the great Emu in the Sky and the Seven Sisters. Both celestial features are found in the astronomical traditions of many Aboriginal cultures across Australia. They are seen in similar ways and have similar meanings between cultures on opposite sides of the continent and are observed to note the changing seasons and the behaviours of plants and animals and inform Law. 1: The Wiradjuri of central NSW are the largest Aboriginal language group in the state and one of the largest in the country. Wiradjuri astronomical knowledge is rich and complex, linking the land and people to the cosmos (Wantanggangura). One of the many dark constellations is that of the celestial emu, called Gugurmin. The emu is a silhouette of the dark spaces stretching from the Southern Cross to Sagittarius in the backdrop of the Milky Way. The galaxy itself is a river called Gular (or Gilaa), which is also the Wiradjuri name of the Lachlan River. 2: The artwork featured on the Seven Sisters coin is from Wajarri-Noongar artist Christine Jugarnu Collard of Yamaji Art. Christine was born and raised in Mullewa, WA and paints under the name Jugarnu meaning old woman in the Wajarri language. The name was given to Christine by her now deceased Grandfather. The Yamaji people of the Murchison region in Western Australia refer to the Pleiades star cluster as Nyarluwarri in the Wajarri language, representing seven sisters. When Nyarluwarri sits low on the horizon at sunset in April, the people know that emu eggs are ready for harvesting. The story of the Seven Sisters tells of them fleeing to the sky to escape the advances of a man who wants to take one of the sisters as his wife. The man chases the sisters as they move from east to west each night, which appear to the northeast at dusk in November and set by April.

15.01.2022 "Hydra the Water Serpent" from the 'Shared Sky Exhibition'. This exhbition highlights the connections between Aboriginal & contemporary astronomy. This artwork ...is acrylic on linen (70cm x 52cm) and the artist is Nerolie Blurton. The Water Serpent, stretched across the sky with its many heads, was a monster until it was cut and killed. The red blood drips down from the clot. The browns and orange show that the Hydra can be seen best in autumn. The 'Shared Sky Exhibition' was a collaborative art display bringing together Indigenous artists from Australia and South Africa to explore ancestral and modern understandings of the sky as it appears above their traditional homelands where the world’s largest radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is located. 14.01.2022 The Virgin Rainbow Opal is Australia's national gemstone, and they were born in what were once sediments at the bottom of a Jurassic shallow and muddy inland se...a called Eromanga, that covered some 60% of the country that were transformed by chemical weathering and bacterial action into lovely gem silica at the time that the sea dried up (see http://on.fb.me/1TgdyjP and http://on.fb.me/1DERkWK for a detailed explanation of the process). Opals are found all around the boundaries of the Great artesian Basin in the centre of the red continent that marks the trace of this once upon a time sea, including in Coober Pedy in South Australia. A miner was rooting around in a disused mineshaft back in 2003 when he came across this fine 6cm piece that has been hailed as the most spectacular black opal ever found. While this is subject to debate it certainly is a lush one, displaying the full spectrum of play of colour in a powerful and glowing artist's palette. The South Australia Museum in Adelaide purchased it to keep it in the country and has put it on display as part of an exhibition celebrating a century of opal mining in the state. Like many opals from the region the silica gel flowed into the space left in the rocks by a fossil, in this case a shell of an extinct cuttlefish like creature related to ammonites called a belemnite (see http://on.fb.me/1TFM2iH for another lovely opalised example and explanation). The opal preserved the fossils well, helping scientists to reconstruct the ecosystems in this Jurassic sea and by its shores by comparing the finds from the various opal fields, most of which are close to the coasts of the Palaeo Sea. 09.01.2022 Awesome fact: scorpions glow in the dark when exposed to UV light! But why? Scientists studying these amazing arachnids think it may be a defense mechanism. Be...cause scorpions tend to hide in dark places and hunt at night, they’re believed to use their outer layer, known as the hyaline layer, to detect UV light. In this instance, the UV light comes in the form of moonlight. If they realise they’re glowing then it means they’re exposed, and it’s time to quickly scurry off to a darker, safer place. 05.01.2022 The International Space Station is now 20 years old. It orbits the Earth every 90 minutes or so, and while it doesn't go past everyone every time, there are qui...te a few opportunities to see it - as long as you don't live in Canada, Northern Russia or anywhere in Scandinavia. Mike from Port Macquarie got a fantastic photo earlier this month. It's the best one I've seen so far. I contacted Mike to find out how he did it. ... and you can take a photo like this yourself! The ISS is about 110 metres across. When it goes over soon after sunset or soon before sunrise, it stands out against a dark sky. If the light is at just the right angle, it can be brighter than Venus. The ISS moves at about the apparent speed of an airliner, but it makes no sound, and has no flashing lights. It's quite serene. But Mike's photo was a challenge. It's a bit like photographing an A380 from Melbourne while the plane is flying over Devonport in Tasmania! Mike uses an app called ISS Spotter to alert him of upcoming flyovers. There are quite a few similar apps, and a website (http://spotthestation.nasa.gov). To take the photo, Mike used a remarkably simple setup (see the photos), but has a well-practiced technique. He has an 8" manual Dobsonian telescope, a camera (an Olympus DSLR) and a 2x Barlow. The effective focal length is 2400mm, which is like a very long lens. The DSLR has a remote shutter button and was set to take photos continuously. Mike used 1/1000s exposures and ISO 1250. Once the camera was focused, all he had to do was physically manhandle the Dobsonian, hold the shutter button in his hand, line up the ISS in the red dot finder (a Telrad) and - to quote him - machine-gun the ISS when it was in the frame. Of course, "all he had to do" belies the fact that it's quite a job to juggle all that heavy and delicate equipment and get good shots. He got around 200 photos, of which 10 or 12 were usable. It's an incredible image, and beautifully captured. Well done Mike!
