25.01.2022 Richmond to Julia Creek via the Maxwelton Racetrack Strava details: 152.64 kms. 5 hrs 55 mins. Ave speed 25.6km/hr. 3405 cals Firstly sorry about the confusion over Last Leg Days...just needed to get the blog days aligned with all important Strava data (which is like Facebook for cyclists...as Susie say's 'if it's not on Strava it did not happen') Before we recall the day's adventures a few people have asked for a Queensland geography lesson so please see the inserted map from Townsville to Cloncurry our Day 1-6 route..we've been heading west so read the daily blog from right to left in order to see the stopping points etc. [ 384 more words ] http://rosscoslastleg.home.blog//last-leg-day-5-the-real-/

21.01.2022 My late morning smile and riding apparel...unlike my 7 AM grimace.... Very cool start to the day....not happy Jan.... After a fantastic rest day at the Mataranka thermal springs I hit the road early because I was very keen to get to Katherine.....it rapidly became apparent my early start was way too early and a big mistake. My fingers and toes were frozen within 10 minutes of riding...hard to believe it can be 5 degrees or less overnight and never mind the windchill effect on the bike at pre-sunrise. 21.01.2022 Entering the ancient lands of Kakadu National Park. World Heritage National Park entrance to Kakadu from the south western corner. The past two days have turned out to be a stark contrast from our previous few days with the relative quietness now that we are travelling on the Kakadu Highway east towards Cooinda and onto Jabiru. The busy traffic noise has been replaced by bird calls and wind rustling through the savannah woodlands and bustling wetlands. 19.01.2022 Been awhile but re-reading David Rock’s great book. Your Brain at Work. Reminded me of The Healthy Platter. Definitely worth applying on a daily basis.

17.01.2022 We've been 'off the grid' for a few days...so here's a quick 'stripped back' update. Sorry there will not be many pictures until we can get better internet access..the joys of being in the remote parts of western Queensland and eastern section of the Northern Territory. Uploading from our phones to the cloud servers and back down again takes more time and patience than we have both got after some long hot days. 16.01.2022 Newcastle Waters turn-off to Daly Waters Pub!! Susie with her mates while waiting for me to arrive in thriving town of Daly Waters. Another early start for another awesome day..well for the most part until the NE breeze appeared. Pedalling just before the sunrise in The Aussie Outback is very Zen-like as its cool, quiet and very peaceful..which unfortunately that 'peaceful easy feeling' gradually goes out the window as the sun rises, the wind stirs and the Grey Nomad Caravan Convoy gets 'on the road again'.. 16.01.2022 Prairie Pub to Hughenden Strava information: 45.22 km. Height gain: 166 m. Ave speed 23.7 km/hr. Today's ride: dedicated to David and Karen B. our good Victorian friends. Today's plan was an easy 45 km roll into Hughenden and is dedicated to our good friends David and Karen, who were going to join us on the Last Leg but unfortunately due to health reasons were unable to make the trip. 16.01.2022 Campaspe River to the Little Pub on the Prairie Strava information: 117.1 kms. 716 m climbing. 24.1 km/hr. 2300 cals. Chippy would be proud of me...managed to scavenge this old sign from the bush next to the motorhome...a good omen or wishful thinking? So the legs were suffering from the usual Day 2 blues and it wasn't until I got to the sign that said the 'Great Dividing Range' and riding into a slight headwind that it made sense as to why I seemed to be slogging along....deceptive and I had not thought about having to climb the Great Dividing Range...for some reason I thought I'd be in for a flat ride to Darwin...fortunately the run down to Torrens Creek made me feel better as I was heading downhill and finally got the SE tradewinds behind me. 15.01.2022 Another few days 'off the grid' as we make it to the Stuart Highway and begin heading north. As all cyclists know we encounter great days (tailwinds, warm sunshine, minimal traffic and smooth roads), good days (some of all those previous elements) and tough days when you get headwinds, climbs, ‘dead roads’ due to the coarse aggregate surfacing material and lots of traffic. 13.01.2022 Come along and be part of the 20th anniversary of the TDU

13.01.2022 Head west young man & take advantage of the tailwind (finally). Strava details: 112.4 km. 261 m climb. Ride time: 3:58:39, Ave speed 28.2 km/hr. 2100 calories. Benefis of war. Prior to 1941, only a track following the telegraph line to the Stuart Hwy in the Northern Territory existed. As part of the defence of northern Australia during WWII it was decided to extend the road from Mt Isa west to connect with the Stuart Hwy which runs north-south from Adelaide to Darwin. 13.01.2022 'No hurry to get to The Curry' Strava details: 141.3 kms. Ave speed 25.6km/hr. Moving time: 5:31:09. Calories 3331. Thanks Julia After a big day into Julia Creek on Day 5, the legs felt heavy as I rolled out for the first 30 kms. I was searching for the tailwinds early on but nothing doing it seemed. Susie surprised me at the first stop with a mug of hot chicken soup...nice work road crew! [ 345 more words ] http://rosscoslastleg.home.blog//last-leg-day-6-julia-cre/

11.01.2022 Rest day for the legs in Richmond, Queensland. Susie with her new friend Kronosaurus queenslandicus at Krono Korner, Richmond Qld As the tourist brochure says 'forget Jurassic Park' these dinosaurs are real..well they were a few hundred million years ago..these scary characters would eat a T-Rex for breakfast apparently..some 11 m long and very ferocious. The Kronosaurus Korner Museum is a fascinating place to visit and is a testament to the local farmers and fossickers who have been involved in finding these fossils across the Flinders Shire. 10.01.2022 Successful road testing of the new toy (N+1) Today’s decision to try out the new Norco steel gravel bike proved to be a very good one (see above picture). The stable Norco Search XR with its wide knobbly tyres meant I could safely take evasive action by diving off the so-called ‘road shoulders’ and into the gravel (see photo below with the puny hazard sign) without crashing when the caravan convoys and road trains rolled by at speed and it got too hairy to share the road. 09.01.2022 Surviving the Stuart Highway Well the highway named after the intrepid Scot McDougall Stuart certainly had its moments for us both. Thankfully we remained accident-free but are relieved to be finally heading east towards Kakadu along the quieter Kakadu Highway. I'm a bit over bogans driving at 130 plus km/hr and road trains. For the first time we have travelled east for a long time. [ 222 more words ] http://rosscoslastleg.home.blog//rosscos-last-leg-day-21-/

05.01.2022 Charters Towers-Campaspe River Strava information: 87 kms. Ave speed: 29.4 km/h. Calories: 2548 Ready to roll at last...let's get this show on the road to Darwin. After the initial disappointment of not starting as planned on Sunday May 26th due to a fridge malfunction, Day 1 of the long awaited Last Leg kicked off around 2.30 PM from Charters Towers, west of Townsville. 03.01.2022 After a few long days along the Barkly and Stuart Highways, senior management called for an easier day, so Day 14 was a short roll from Banka Banka in the cooler parts of the day. Renner Springs proved to be an interesting place to rest & enjoy the shade and put my feet up for a few hours and finish my book at last. 02.01.2022 Getting close now... So I'm in the taper week as we get closer to Townsville and starting the last leg from Charters Towers next Sunday. Susie has done a great job this week learning to drive the motorhome without a co-pilot including driving solo along Route 67 in central Queensland. Also, Susie is learning the fine art of being a 'road crew' person as well...including finding a safe place to park & feed me..much appreciated. 01.01.2022 Part of the Pink Panther Pub Peleton (refuelling spot) What a difference a rest day, flat roads and a warm tailwind make to a cyclists’ spirits. As we constantly remind ourselves bad days are never permanent and good riding conditions are just another day awaythat’s what the mantra is always apparently. Day 17 has been just that..flattish, fun and relatively fast. [ 903 more words ] http://rosscoslastleg.home.blog//last-leg-day-17-18-daly-/
