15.01.2022 The number of babies born to drug or alcohol addicted mothers has surged recently tripling in the last seven years. Now around six in every 1000 Australian b...abies is born to a drug addicted mother. The increase seems to be due to ever greater consumption of ice and a general spread of opioid addiction. Here is a case study to illustrate some of the issues. Samanthas mother Lucinda was a heavy drug user being dependent on ice and many other drugs. As well she has a severe mental illness. She has little support from outside. Her mother has passed away. Her partner is not a caring one: he a drug user and that totally dominates his life. Lucindas marriage to her partner has been a disaster. Neither knew what they were getting into with the unplanned pregnancy. Rather than carefully preparing to look after the baby, they made the mistake of continuing to take drugs. This poisoned the baby before she was born. Babies are not actually addicted at birth but they are heavily damaged on arrival. The symptoms can include: tremors, diarrhea, irritability, seizures and difficulty breathing and feeding. Long stays in hospital are usually required to detox the baby but many do not even experience this. In the case of Samantha, like so many others, she was not well looked after by her mother who continued taking drugs and did not do all the things that babies need. She was not kept clean, nappies not changed, she was not fed well or properly. So many such babies have a horrendous plight compounded by poor care. The mothers cousin Fiona, however, stepped in and sought to take over her job. She grew to know and love the baby. She had a real passion and often spoilt her with the latest baby fashions. Having a real inclination for her to look pretty in pink she spoilt her like no other. But it was hard to gain enough control of her life. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) was involved and it took a long time for them to be convinced that Fiona could do a better job than Lucinda and Lucinda often presented very well, at least superficially, creating the impression that she could handle everything. She was in a position of power being the mother. The DHHS system was not really very responsive and certainly not quickly to the challenge. Samanthas fate is not so different from those who go to the DHHS. They are often moved around within the imperfect and inadequate DHHS system unable to settle down and have stability as they go from one place to the next. Often there is not the perfect match with foster cares and the baby is in a never ending whirl of foster cares homes which are themselves spread too thin. However, thanks to Fiona, the baby has been better looked after, essentially thanks to her compassion and love of the baby. But Samanthas life will be a short one. She has a rare form of paralysis which will not see her life last beyond a few years if lucky. Fiona has made the best of the situation. She was in many ways the rightful mother and like the biological one. Thanks to her, Samantha had a better, higher quality life and was able to prosper as much as she could in her circumstances. I am very concerned to think of what would have happened to Samantha had Fiona not taken over. Even though it has its own special circumstances, this is not an unusual case. Babies born to drug addicted parents typically have a problem all their life and often their life is a short and sad one.
