25.01.2022 Well, here we are again if you have an appointment with me this week please wait to hear from us

12.01.2022 Full disclosure. This past few weeks has been a roller coaster of sneezing, itching and watering eyes and apologies to my patients about my allergic rhinitis that has been triggered in pregnancy. I knew this was a thing. I’ve treated women for this exact issue, but good lord I did not know how bad hay fever symptoms could get! It’s minor in the grand scheme of growing a human, but sniffling and sneezing in this world right now all while wearing a mask is next level. The pr...egnancy journey can be a real trip, but when I was laying in the bath last night, after finally giving in to some nasal spray and I felt her little squirms, I instantly felt so much better. I was so relieved that she was safe inside of me and wasn’t bothered by my violent sneezing one bit. There were honestly moments where I thought I would either pee myself and/or sneeze her out way too early. I’m glad to say neither happened and I’m confident my pelvic floor is strong af I’m so incredibly grateful to be surrounded by talented and knowledgeable health practitioners of all kinds! Ive got all the herbs and acupuncture a pregnant gal could ever want and when we get to the bottom of how to treat this crazy business, I’ll let you know! Now onwards to a less sneezy week! @maternitybeyond

12.01.2022 It’s world breastfeeding week, so in honour of this I’d like to tell you a bit about the TCM perspectives of breastmilk production and the energetics of breastfeeding. In TCM it is understood that a woman's menstrual blood is converted into breast milk once her baby is born. This is the same blood that was going to the placenta prior to birth. Qi (energy) is required to convert her blood into milk, and blood itself is required to become the milk, so you can imagine how impor...tant it is to have a healthy supply of both blood and Qi in the body prior to beginning the breastfeeding journey. Blood and Qi can be supported throughout pregnancy with adequate nutrition that includes a well-rounded combination of all the macronutrients. From a Chinese dietary therapy perspective, blood and Qi building foods like beats, bone broths, animal proteins and nourishing grains are key! And onwards into postpartum, readymade nourishing meals will ensure mama is getting all she needs to help produce breast milk and preserve her Qi. When it comes to issues with breastfeeding, things like low milk supply, blocked ducts (mastitis) and nipple issues can be caused by a combination of emotions like anger, extreme sadness, as well as inadequate nutritional support, and illness. Thankfully there are so many amazing ways to help with Chinese medicine and acupuncture if any of these issues happen to come up during your breastfeeding journey. Another interesting aspect of breastfeeding from a TCM perspective is the change in the flow of Qi (energy) in the body. While a woman is pregnant, much of her Qi and blood moves downwards to nourish the placenta, but once the baby and placenta are delivered, the blood begins to divert upwards to the breast tissue and glands. The sucking motion from the baby latching on encourages a lifting in her body, helping the internal organs and uterus to find their place once more.

11.01.2022 Let’s stop telling pregnant people how big or small they look I’ve heard - you’re so compact for 24 weeks, and you look bigger than 24 weeks all in one day The fact of the matter is, pregnant people are all different shapes and sizes and they all carry differently, so your gauge of their size might actually cause them to worry... Am I too small? Is my baby nourished enough? Is he/she ok!? Omg I’m too big for how many weeks I am!? I’m only halfway I’m showing already!? How big will I be by the end!? Oh no I’m so skinny, my hyper-emesis has been really bad, I hope my baby is ok. I’m so exhausted and sick all the time You get the idea. Pregnancy is a particularly sensitive time. Lots of hormones and lots of big emotions. The only thing a pregnant person really wants to hear is something encouraging. Yes, it is the general idea that a pregnant persons blooms and grows, it’s just not anyone’s job to tell them how much is too much or too little in their eyes. (Except for their healthcare provider in some situations). Maybe this is the hormones in me talking, but it’s time to shift the narrative on this topic. We discourage comparison and shaming women’s bodies after birth, so why not while we’re pregnant too!? How do my pregnant peeps feel about this?

08.01.2022 Halfway baked I’m right into reading about all things birth and preparing for this intense, amazing, life-changing right of passage. I’ve got lots of time to prepare still, but in standard over-preparer fashion, I’ve purchased a few books, an e-course and we’re attending hypnobirthing I’m genuinely interested and have considered taking the doula course in the future, but for now I’m just enjoying absorbing all this wisdom from some of Australia’s highly regarded midwive...s, birth educators and OB’s. Thanks to everyone who sent me their birth education recommendations. I’m reading up a storm and enjoying tiny kicks from little miss - who also seems to like the material

07.01.2022 I haven’t posted in ages because lockdown/growing a human has made me want to just bake, online shop and avoid all things social media (except for posts about my dog), but Spring is officially here, and my brain is firing once again. As TCM pracs we LOVE the seasons and all the changes they bring with them. We adjust our sleep, diets, activities, and mindsets to keep our bodies and minds balanced all year round or we sure as heck try to! Spring is about movement, growth, an...d expansion. The flowers are blooming and so are we! If you’re in Victoria right now, the prospects of growth and expansion might feel restricted as our lockdown looms over us for the month of September. Really not a great start to the Spring to be honest, but here we are. Let’s talk about what I’ve been noticing/hearing from people and what we can do to pep things up a bit and come into balance with Spring despite the restrictions. What I’m noticing... People feel stuck People feel frustrated People feel unmotivated The organ of Spring is the Liver, which is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi in the body. When Liver Qi doesn’t flow, we can have pain, lack of flexibility both in our lives and tendons, irritability, anger, pebbly poops/constipation, and itchy skin vibes. So, what can we do to help bring ourselves back into balance?... Move your body walk, run, pilates, yoga, dance. Anything that you like to do. Do it even if you don’t want to and feel unmotivated. You will feel better for it. Breath work Try simple triangle breathing. Check Youtube or google for instructions. Express your frustration! yell, cry, write Dan Andrews an angry letter, call a friend, pound a pillow, swear release stuck emotions! The Liver LOVES when you release your pent-up emotion. You’ll breath deeper and sleep better than you have in weeks. There you go! 3 simple Liver Qi moving, completely free activities that will help to smooth out your stuck Qi and hopefully take the edge off this bullshit we call lockdown. You can do them in any order, and I highly recommend you do them daily! I tend to do them backwards yell/swear, breathe, move my body

03.01.2022 Let's talk about long term health. I often have patients ask, "how long will I need to eat like this" or "how long do I need to do ____ for". This is on the back of me giving lifestyle adjustments. I very rarely recommend restrictive diets and short term, arduous lifestyle changes. Maybe in rare cases there might be a reason for it, but 99% of the time I tackle things the Chinese medicine way - which means I offer advice that is sustainable and to be practiced daily to see lo...ng term improvement/stability. In the fast paced, immediate satisfaction world we live in I think we forget how long term commitments really go the full mile in offering us the security and comfort we need. This can be applied to all sorts of issues in life! I don't have a magic pill, but I do want you to feel better in a short period of time and much of the advice I give is intended to do just that. Meeting me halfway is imperative in reaching your health goals. When you come in for a condition that's been plaguing you for the last 3 years, there's a strong chance I'll have some work for you to do outside the treatment room. Will you come to the table ready to commit? I'm your biggest cheerleader and 100% committed to the health of my patients, so if something isn't working or needs a tweak I'm all over it! Let's do this together

02.01.2022 One thing I hear a lot of when I’m assessing complexions is, I’m not happy that I have to wear makeup to cover up _____. This is a huge triggering topic for many with a long history of programming put upon women, so let’s break this down and reframe it If you are choosing to wear makeup because it helps you to feel confident then perhaps accept that this is where you’re at right now. If adding foundation helps you to leave the house and talk to people, then that is perfect...ly acceptable. I mean, we’re shamed for not wearing makeup and now we’re shaming ourselves for wearing it!? You can’t solve the issues that come with this ridiculous engrained standard overnight, so while you’re working on your inner critic and your skin wear the makeup if it makes you feel better. Not all makeups are created equal. There are foundations that are laden with chemicals and fragrances and there are foundations that can add something wholesome to your skin, choose the latter. Wearing a mineral powder or BB cream that is natural, paraben free, contains a natural SPF etc. is far better than picking up something from the chemist shelf. And wearing a good quality, low tox makeup brand will absolutely help you to avoid breakouts and further irritating your skin. Ladies, let’s stop shaming ourselves for wearing makeup and instead gently work on the programming behind this. Nothing changes overnight and berating yourself for not having a perfect complexion isn’t going to help on the journey to renewed confidence in your skin. One day at a time, look in the mirror and speak kind words to yourself about your appearance, stop focusing on the flaws and they’ll begin to fade away
