05.01.2022 How to find a psychologist - Top 3 tips As a psychologist theres two questions that I alway get when I meet people for the first time at a diner party and I tell them that I am a psychologist. Question one, are you reading my mind right now? and question two, how do I find a good psychologist?. The answer to the first question is if I could read minds then I would be a superhero, not a psychologist". For the second question I thought Id make a vid with my thoughts on h...ow to find a psychologist, below is a summary. You get to choose. Its important to shop around for a psychologist that you feel a good connection with. Like with a lot of things in life, like finding a mechanic or hairdresser it is important to keep looking until you find the right psychologist. Research has consistently found that the relationship is the most important part of the therapy and without an empathic relationship, therapy wont work. Make sure that the way they work is a good fit for what you are looking for. Different psychologists have different approaches, such as working on building skills to manage with your difficulties and/or addressing underlying core issues that are contribute to ongoing difficulties. Reading about the psychologists approach and if you can, speaking with them before the first session can help to get a sense of how therapy will be with them. Use the Australian Psychological Society (APS) website to search for a registered and fully qualified psychologist in your area. I hope this helps. 03.01.2022 Andrew is a registered Psychologist who will work collaboratively with you to understand and reduce the impact of emotional pain and interpersonal difficulties that can get in the way of living a meaningful and fulfilling life. Andrew will work with you to address issues you may have been experiencing for a long time, such as chronic worry and anxiety, feeling overwhelmed by angry, sad or anxious feelings or feeling flat shut off and depressed. Andrew is focused on helping ...you develop long term meaningful change, reducing the impact of underlying painful or shut off feelings and moving toward an increased sense of self worth and meaning in your life. Depression and anxiety is our minds way of letting us know that something is out of balance in our lives. Often this can be a result of being emotionally stuck or being unable to express our inner feelings toward others we care about. As we grow up we learn ways of expressing or shutting down our emotions depending on how those around us respond. Shutting down our feelings can be a protective way of coping, however, doing this as adults can get in the way of developing authentic meaningful relationships, and make it difficult to make decisions that are true to yourself in moving forward in life, relationships and career. You may feel blocked and not know why, and this can then develop into feeling anxious and worried and/or flat, worthless and depressed. Andrews preferred methods of treatment are psychodynamic, schema and interpersonal therapy. These approaches focus on the importance of creating a safe space to explore often painful and difficult feelings and using the relationship between therapist and client to resolve interpersonal difficulties and understand and work through the origins of beliefs and behaviours that contribute to mental health issues in order to improve well being, connection and meaning. Andrew has experience working in outpatient public hospital settings as well as private practice and working with people with a range of mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, Bi-polar, PTSD and personality disorders as well as complex trauma grief and loss, interpersonal and existential issues.
