24.01.2022 Someone looks like she swallowed a football
24.01.2022 Hi folks, I get many messages, emails and phone calls (especially in the past 5 or 6 weeks!) of people asking advice on keeping reptiles as pets, which reptile... is a good starter, what do I need, where to purchase etc etc. Im always up for having a chat and giving advice where I can, based on my knowledge and experiences. Happy to share tips and answer questions when time allows.... So I thought Id do a bit of a post on where to start when considering adding a reptile to your family. Research is key. I would always recommend doing as much research as possible into which animal would suit you best. Whether it have fur, feathers or scales. Get your kids involved! This is the true test, and its fun learning together. All reptiles have their own individual requirements. And each subspecies has their own adaptations or variances that may require different needs. Example, not all Carpet Pythons have the same requirements. Australia has a vast range of habitats, climates and ecosystems and within many of those, live various species of Carpet Pythons. If I got a dollar for every time someone said they had a Carpet Python but didnt know which species.... Some of the most commonly kept reptiles can live for more than 30 years! Something major to consider when making your decision. Every week I receive emails and messages of reptiles needing homes. Especially turtles! I wish I could take them all, but I cant. (The kids would get mad at me ) Some things to perhaps start researching are.... What does the animal eat? Favourite foods, are they easily accessible? Why are those foods important? Supplements, vitamins? Are they needed? Why are they important? Where does the animal live in the wild and how can I best replicate that? (Temperature, habitat etc...) Where is the closest reptile vet should my pet ever become sick? What UV lighting and heating is required? How often does it need to be changed? How big will my reptile grow? Will I need to upgrade to a larger enclosure/environment as it grows? How much is it going to cost to take care of? Over its lifespan....? What are certain behaviours I need to be mindful of? Is the reptile mainly diurnal or nocturnal? Who will take care of my pet if I am away? Reptiles are ectothermic, what does this mean? If my reptile becomes sleepy or goes off their food when the weather becomes cooler, why is this happening? If you can find out information about these things, I think that will help you to make the best decision for you and your family Reptiles make wonderful pets and with the proper care can live a long and happy life. And bring your family much joy, as they have mine. They all have their own personalities and quirks! (Despite what anyone says!!) Do some research and if you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask. None of us have all the answers, we all learn from each other and the animals themselves. All the best. Warm regards, Nadia Disclaimer: Reptiles RULE! (And are highly addictive!!)
23.01.2022 Growing nicely, will be available from 16/11/2020
23.01.2022 At Asw Beardies, we are a small, family run hobby breeder of high quality Central Bearded Dragon Morphs. We specialize in the pure Central Bearded Dragon Morphs... such as Hypomelanistic and Translucent in both Normal scaled and Leatherbacks. We try, to the best of our ability, not to breed silkbacks as I find them to be far from the pure types we endeavour to produce We also aim for high colour and healthy size dragons, keeping our lines free from cross breeding, that a lot of breeders are doing these days, keeps our lines free of the genetic issues that can affect growth and general wellbeing of the animals. We also DO NOT breed huge numbers but like to stick to a few selected pairings each season so we can concentrate on quality rather than quantity. We also like to keep as close to the natural seasons runs ensuring our adults can go through the cycle of life as nature intended. All our adult dragons are allowed to naturally brumate during the cooler months ensuring nice levels of strong healthy offspring. Our breeding season usually runs from late August to early January with hatchies available between late October to late April early May at the latest. See more

17.01.2022 Time for weigh in! Flashs owners have recently observed an increase in his activity and a lot of beard flaring. The winter solstice (shortest day of the year) ...was 2 days ago in the Southern Hemisphere . The increasing day length will cue bearded dragons to start the breeding season and show an increase in activity and territorial displays. By late July we will start seeing females with reproductive activity such as egg laying and follicle development and associated health complications. Despite our efforts to manipulate artificial heat and lighting, captive dragons will still follow the natural environmental cues that their wild ancestors have evolved with over millions of years . . #beardie #BeardieVet #pogona #pogonavitticeps #pogonavitticepsofinstagram #beardeddragon #beardeddragonsofinstagram #australia #outback #lizard #beardiesofinstagram #beardies #dragons #agamid #herpsofinstagram #herpetology #australianherpetology #bartagame #bartagamen #bartagamenofinstagram #lizardsofinstagram #wildbeardeddragon #wildbeardie

05.01.2022 Its important to choose the correct UVB fitting and globe to match your enclosure. There are four Ferguson Zones that are used to accurately determine the UV ...index required for any reptile. Bearded dragons fall between zone 3 and 4. Bearded dragons need a UV Index between 2.9 and 7.4UVI. In the wild, bearded dragons will bask in the morning and in the afternoon while the UV levels are conducive for basking. During the hotter parts of the day, beaded dragons will seek shade and cryptically bask in filtered light through bushes and trees. Just like a bearded dragon requires a heat gradient from their basking spot to their cool side, they need a UV gradient from their basking spot down to a UV Index of zero in the cool side. There are a multitude of UVB light options currently available on the market, ranging from the E27 compact screw type to the T8 and T5. Pairing these with the right hardware is important to ensure an optimal outcome. Caution...... Mesh lids will reduce the effectiveness of UVB lights by between 20-50% and Glass lids will block all (100%) usable UVB. E27 compact UVB globes have limited range for UVB projection, adding a dome helps direct the UVB to where it need to go. This can increase the effective range from (14-20cm) to (45-85cm). The down side to compact UVB globes is that they wont achieve the 2/3 rule to cover your enclosure with usable UVB. T8 tubes have been on the market for a long time, they still can be used effectively providing that you use them in the right application. Even with a reflector hood, T8 tubes only have a short UVB profile. Reaching between 7.5-20cm. The correct application for these tubes is as an under mount fitting in a low profile enclosure, something about 45cm tall for instance. The UVB tubes that are being highly praised right now are the T5 tubes. Before I get into the benefits of these tubes, I need to give a WARNING.... T5 tubes have an extremely high output, make sure that you dragon will not be basking in a zone that is determined as unsafe. Being exposed to a UV Index greater than 8 can have unwanted health risks. T5 tubes as suitable for tall enclosures and being mounted on top of mesh lids. With an effective range between 20-45cm, they can offer your bearded dragon the ideal UVB gradient if used in a 60cm tall enclosure as a minimum. Provided that the T5 fitting is installed near the basking light, the dragon cant bask with 20cm of the UVB tube and there is an area in the enclosure where the dragon can escape the UVB, these style tubes are great. The important thing to take away from this is that all UVB globes and tubes can be appropriate if used in the correct manner. Please do you research on the product you wish to use to ensure it is suitable for your beardies enclosure.
