23.01.2022 Happy New Year everyone! Hope you're all well rested after all that celebrating. Got myself out of bed again at stupid o'clock yesterday morning and headed down to Point Peron. Didn't really have anything in mind and the sunrise was getting away from me (too much faffing about making coffee before I left home, haha). So I hit old faithful, The Rock. By the way if anyone knows if the rocky feature has a name I'd love to know! ... So here's my first post for 2016. Hope ou all have a good year!

23.01.2022 I ventured out last night to chase a few of those little storm cells lurking off the coast, they showed some potential for for lightning shots. Unfortunately the lightning stayed a little too far off the coast to make any real impact for decent photos. As I was walking back to my car I saw an unusual red glow in the clouds to the south so figured I'd head to another vantage point to see what it was. Turns out it was the massive fires burning down south around Waroona, over 100kms away, viewed from the southern carpark at Point Peron.

23.01.2022 How you all doin' out there? Haven't posted anything for a while have I? It's wedding season and let me tell ya, it's been crazy these last few months! However I did manage to drag my sorry arse out of bed last Friday morning at stupid o'clock (3:15am to be precise) and get on down to Point Peron before dawn. You understand that I did this just for you guys right? In the name of art! ;-) I thought with the mid to high level cloud cover I might have been in with a chance for a... pre dawn colour splash across the sky. Alas, unfortunately that elusive red dawn light remained just that, elusive. Not to worry though, the cloud cover was still pretty interesting and I managed to bag a few keepers. Here's two of them.

23.01.2022 Hey there, remember me?! Yea, it's been a while, sorry about that. Things have been busy with weddings, travel and whatnot. Anyhoo, dragged my butt outta bed at stupid o'clock this morning hoping to shoot the Aquarids meteor shower. It looked kinda ok when I arrived though unfortunately those pesky clouds moved in pretty quickly and spoiled the show. Nonetheless a combination of those far off city lights and the low cloud worked out in my favour. Usually light pollution is a ...photographers worst enemy when shooting the night sky, I reckon this time it paid off well. You know what hey say, when life gives you lemons... :-) Shot at Herron Point (just south of Mandurah) with Nikon D3 & D800.

22.01.2022 Here's a quick star trail I did on Wednesday night during the eclipse. Generally speaking star trails ain't something you'd do during a full moon however once the moon was fully covered by the earth's shadow the skies quite suddenly went almost as dark as if there was no moon. I set up another camera facing south and left the shutter open for 30 minutes. And got a plane flying right through the middle as a nice little bonus! Tech specs for camera geeks - Nikon D3 with 18-35mm lens (set at 18 mm). ISO 200, f5.6 for 30 minutes.

18.01.2022 Spent a few days down in Denmark on the south coast of WA last week. Had hoped to get some astro shooting in but a waxing moon at over 50% pretty much shot that hope down in flames. Nonetheless I headed out to Lights Beach and did this instead :-) 6 image pano stitched in PS. Individual frames shot at ISO 1000, f4, 10 seconds. Nikon D800 + 16-35mm lens.

18.01.2022 Shot a wedding down south at Bunker Bay last weekend. With a full moon on offer seems the only sensible thing to do after I finished was head over the other side of the cape and do this. Cape Naturaliste looking back towards Sugarloaf Rock. Hope ya like it! Have a good weekend now.

15.01.2022 And so here it is, the main event, what you've all been waiting for, the greatest show on earth! The 2018 blue blood moon lunar eclipse (or whatever it was they called it, lol). Headed out deep into the Perth Hills on Wednesday night. After weeks of scoping out different spots on the back of the Darling Scarp I settled on this spot at Mt Dale with a spectacular & uninterrupted view of the eastern horizon. We remained here for the entire 5 hour duration of the event. Creating ...this composite image was quite a challenge. I'd struggled with how to present the entirety of the lunar eclipse as it started before the sun set. I'd initially thought to show the full range of the sky as it went from day to night then blacked out entirely during the eclipse before lightening again once the moon reappeared. I couldn't find a way to blend it all together and make it look convincing so in the end I settled on this dark, starry sky as this is how it appeared during the eclipse totality. I've kept the moon's course through the sky true to life however the size of the moon is shown approximately 50% larger than it actually appeared. And the foreground is a blend of early evening (daylight) & moonlight shots. All in all there are over 60 separate images, all shot over the course of the evening, blended together to create a single image resembling how it looked at the time. And so there you have it. Hope you all like it!

14.01.2022 Teamed up with Mark Nangle & Robert Claydon for an astro photography mission last Sunday night. Headed out to Mt Dale to get away from the city lights. Skies were perfectly clear and dark, looking up towards south east the core of the Milky Way stood out like a beacon! Looking the the south/south west was a little different with the lights of Pinjarra way off in the distance. Generally speaking we'd avoid this kind of light pollution however I thought I could use the sky glow... off the back of the ridge line to my advantage. Even managed an hour long star trail exposure. I reckon it turned out pretty good :-) Nikon

14.01.2022 Walking home this morning after dropping my daughter at school I looked down the street opposite our house and noticed some super dark cloud on the horizon. Knowing what was coming but not having time to drive anywhere better I simply grabbed a D750 with a 24-70mm and headed down the local park. Yea, nothing fancy but it ain't every day we get bomb storm front like this in Perth! So there you have it, crazy storm front in a suburban park :-) 5 image pano @ 24mm focal length w...ith a quick & dirty edit in Photoshop. 1/180, f8, ISO 400.

13.01.2022 #challengeonnature day 1 Ok, so fellow landscape shooter Mark Nangle has nominated me for this Challenge On Nature, (thanks mate, like I don't have enough work to do already, hahaha). Anyway, the aim being to post a nature pic each day for 7 days and nominate a fresh person each day (Nominated person will be on my personal page). So here's one I shot around Cape Freycinet down south last year (Yep, I'm raiding the archives!). You might remember I posted a similar image last year shot on film, this is the digital version. I simply swapped the camera body off my tripod, switched lenses and there you have it!

13.01.2022 Waiting for the show to begin. Headed out in the hills east of Perth on Wednesday night with fellow photographer Mark Nangle for the lunar eclipse. I'd scoped out a few places in the weeks leading up to the event and found this spot up at Mt Dale, just a ten minute walk from the car park, with a perfectly clear view of the eastern horizon. Amazingly, despite the car park being full of people, we had this spot to ourselves for the entire duration of he lunar eclipse. Winning!

12.01.2022 Went out to shoot the Geminids meteor shower last night, thought I'd totally nailed it when I saw this shot come up on the back of my camera after a 17 minute exposure! Alas, a closer inspection on the big screen this morning revealed it was actually a plane :-( Nonetheless I reckon it's still a keeper :-)

10.01.2022 Got up and out early for that super moon last week. I figured EVERYONE would be out shooting the moonrise on Monday night so I thought I'd head down to Point Peron before dawn the next morning for something different. So here's a few of the best ones...

10.01.2022 Thought I'd go out the other night and give this astro photography thing a whirl. Not bad for a first crack (even if I don't say so myself!) Point Peron looking S/SW... Nikon D750 + 16-35mm lens. 30.0 sec; f/4.0; ISO 2500

10.01.2022 Hey y'all, can't believe I haven't posted anything since February! But hey, that lunar eclipse was something else eh?! We headed up to the mid west last weekend on the wildflower trail, stayed overnight at Eneabba. Man those stars are bright out there, so good! Wasn't looking too good early in the evening for astro photography with some low cloud cover hanging about. Luckily the cloud cover cleared off by around 9:30pm so I jumped on it.... Turned out well worth the effort even if I don't say so myself!

09.01.2022 Yesterdays job, industrial sized product photography!

06.01.2022 Maroubra Beach, 40x20 inch print on Kodak Endura paper. Sending this one off to a customer in the good old USA. Yep, world wide shipping totally available!

06.01.2022 Just as Spiderman said to Peter Griffin "Everybody gets one", lol. Well I got one the other night up at Wedge Island. The moon was up by this point so I was finishing up shooting my final row of shots for a larger panoramic image when this happened, a super bright meteor passing through the frame!... This was never meant to be a stand alone image, with the exposure at 45 seconds the stars are starting to streak noticeably but it works well enough so what the hell!

06.01.2022 Dead calm at Martin's Tank. Headed down to Yalgorup NP last weekend, camped out at Martins Tank campground (which is amazing by the way!). Had hoped to get some shots of the Milky Way before it disappears for the season, unfortunately there's no good west facing vantage points around the campsite itself so I settled for the only good vantage point on the lake itself which was nothing more than a small opening in the trees on the lake's western shoreline. Fortunately it face...d south/south east which worked out just fine for a hour long star trail exposure. The complete lack of wind was a bonus also, the lake remained a complete glass off for the duration of the exposure. Nikon D750 + 16-35mm lens, 60 minute exposure, 400 ISO at f8.

05.01.2022 After a tonne of research I ordered an IRIX 15mm lens a couple of weeks back. It arrived earlier this week so headed out to Point Peron on Tuesday night to see how it goes. Obviously with a 30% waxing moon conditions weren't ideal. I was never going to come away with a classic Milky Way image but I came away with a decent shot nonetheless. At any rate this was more of an exercise in lens testing. And I'm pleased to say the lens performs really damn well! It's sharp wide open ...at f2.4 and very little distortion. For the settings hounds: Sky - 15 seconds, f3.3, ISO 2000 Foreground - 45 seconds, f3.3, ISO 2000 Nikon D750 IRIX Blackstone 15mm f2.4 See less

02.01.2022 Last weekend we covered some 900km driving around up in the mid west region on a wildflower hunt. Did we see some awesome stuff? Yea for sure we did, it's an amazing part of the state for wildflowers. The day after we got home we went for a walk down one of the trails around Kogolup Lake in Beeliar. The abundance and diversity of the wildflowers in this little patch of bushland absolutely blew my mind. These photos were taken along a 200 meter stretch of track. And all so clo...se to home. it's less than one kilometer from where we live! So if you want to see some amazing wildflowers but don't feel like driving a few hundred kilometers go for a walk in your local bushland, you'll be surprised in what you might find. But go soon, it'll all be over in a few weeks!

02.01.2022 Wow, spare time. Been finding myself with plenty of it lately so I can actually post something here for a change. What a treat, lol. Headed out in to Perth's super stormy weather today and came up with this. It's a blend of three images with shutter speeds ranging from 1 to 2 seconds, ISO ranging from 50 to 200. All shot at f11 using a Hoya NDX400 ND filter with Nikon D800 + 16-35mm lens @ 35mm. The three exposures were blended in Photoshop using layer masks then finishe...d up with B&W, selective colour & curves adjustment layers. I had the usual indecisions that we all have during post production wondering if I was over doing it. Anyway, this is where I landed :-)

01.01.2022 Oh hey there y'all, Happy New Year! I managed to get out the other night and add a few shots to an on going astro project involving single capture long exposures around the same time as the moon rise, the idea being to include a small amount of illumination on the landscape while balancing it with a reasonably dark sky. I opened the shutter on this one at Point Peron (Western Australia) a few minutes before moon rise and left it for 13.5 minutes by which time the moon had ris...en just enough to throw a bit of illumination into the bay and highlight some of the features. Hope y'all like it!
