25.01.2022 And just outside Canberra theres been a fine dusting of snow, too

25.01.2022 The Last Post echoes through the pre-dawn chill as native birds greet ANZAC Day. Lest We Forget.

25.01.2022 I would have been seated opposite the Admiral Duncan having coffee as the nail bomb went off. But I decided I couldnt be bothered navigating the chaos of Tottenham Court Road tube after work that day at British Red Cross, so I went somewhere else.

24.01.2022 I knew two people who died on September 11, 2001. Andrew Knox of Adelaide was working in the World Trade Centre. Yvonne Kennedy of Sydney was aboard the plane which crashed into The Pentagon.... Andrew was the housemate of a good friend in Adelaide. Yvonne was an Australian Red Cross colleague and volunteer. As the National Communications Manager at Australian Red Cross I managed our response; helped the families of the 10 Australians who died and assisted the Australians who wanted to help them. It was a team effort on an awful day, which became months and have now become 19 years. Today I still cannot watch vision or listen to the audio from that terrible day. I just cannot fathom the inhumanity behind the planning and its execution. It is all just too terrible for words. Image: Tribute in Light Photographer: Gary Hershorn

23.01.2022 As Austereos B105 Morning Crew Producer every time Roy & HG came to Brisbane we got them on the show. They were a huge hit with our listeners and we valiantly tried behind-the-scenes to lure them away from ABC Australia to the network. At the time we were unsuccessful because they were intensely loyal to the ABC. But circumstances change and they were lured away.... Looking forward to this tonight on ABC TV + iview. I hope King Wally Otto in the Soundproof Booth gets a guernsey. Paparazzi. Litterati. Glitterati. Tonight on Australian Story.

23.01.2022 Its National Volunteer Week, an initiative of Volunteering Australia. My grandparents taught me the value of volunteering and also the importance of philanthropy. Often both intertwined as my grandmother was a lifelong Australian Red Cross volunteer. Some (earlier) thoughts when I was named NSW Volunteer of the Year https://bit.ly/3dXNGum ... #community #RedCross #NeighbourDay #NVW2020

23.01.2022 Extraordinary reporting by Sean Rubinsztein-Dunlop on ABC Australia 7.30 about the NSW bushfires in 2019/20. From my experience broadcasting during the fires I know how critical information was to communities and the NSW Rural Fire Service fire fighters. ABC News ABC Sydney

22.01.2022 Remembering the service of my grandfather, his sister, their brother and my relative Captain Philip Ignatius Callary, the ANZAC hero who died on Hill 60, Gallipoli. Lest We Forget.

22.01.2022 Some (further) personal news from me. Im being admitted to hospital for major surgery on Monday so while Im gone, please continue to be kind and generous. Be sensible, be aware, be mindful of your actions. Were in the eye of the cyclone - it hasnt moved out to sea.

21.01.2022 The coronavirus pandemic continues to impact communities all around the world. It has challenged us all in ways we never imagined. Even though there are 120 research projects worldwide, with 15 that have progressed to human trials, its not over yet. But, hopefully, scientists are close. This survey is from Relationships Australia, the home of Neighbour Day. Please consider sharing it with your family and neighbours.

20.01.2022 Bought dinner tonight for a homeless young First Nations woman begging outside the supermarket, her life in bags in a shopping trolley. Roast chicken, her favourite. It made her cry. We’re a wealthy nation. We can do better. We must do better.

19.01.2022 Absolutely love this from my ABC TV + iview colleagues. Bravo

18.01.2022 Just now, in a quiet suburban Melbourne street, I came across a dad teaching his two teenage daughters AFL Women's ball handling skills. It made 51 year old me smile. A lot. How far we’ve come.... Melbourne, Victoria, Australia AFL

16.01.2022 When I started in commercial media with John Fairfax Limited at 5DN 972 in 1985 it was beginning of a push to make news entertaining (ala the domino scene in Broadcast News). Now its news as debate. Weve lost something - maybe decency, probably empathy, likely both.

15.01.2022 How good is science. This is the technology my ophthalmologist is going to implant in my eyes to treat glaucoma. The tubes will drain each eye to reduce the pressure, saving my sight, after being treated for over 20 years.

14.01.2022 Those who endured the Black Summer bushfires showed the power of humanity in the face of disaster. Well be sharing more of their stories in the coming weeks. And you can read our six-month report here: www.redcross.org.au/bushfirereport

14.01.2022 A very special Thank You to the St Vincents Hospital Melbourne team who have looked after me so well. The care and professionalism of the nurses + doctors has been first class, from arrival to departure. Home early for good behaviour.

13.01.2022 How is your community staying connected with you right now?

12.01.2022 From my colleagues at ABC Emergency

12.01.2022 I have signed up to the Australian Government Department of Healths COVIDsafe app. You should too. Australia has not overcome the COVID-19 danger yet - and were about to enter our flu season as winter approaches. It will soon be summer in the northern hemisphere which may assist countries battling the horrendous impacts there.... We cant be complacent. And make sure you get a flu shot this year, too. Its more important than ever. Find out more about the COVIDsafe app here https://www.health.gov.au/reso/apps-and-tools/covidsafe-app

11.01.2022 So this has happened today. Healthcare professionals are doing an outstanding job in hospitals, medical centres and now pop-up clinics to keep us all safe. And well. I have been unwell since Easter - self isolating and limiting personal contact - with symptoms common to coronavirus. High temperature, muscle ache, lethargy and extreme tiredness, sore throat, bit of a dry cough. ... My knowledge of the Five Moments of Hand Hygiene (look it up) is 100% and has come in quite handy since COVID-19 began to have an impact, and each time Ive returned from a walk or the shops Ive used hand sanitiser. But again today Ive seen people in close proximity sitting outside cafes with takeaway coffee, standing around in close groups having a chat, going for a walk side-by-side. People attending the screening clinic I was sent to got angry with the security guard because he kept enforcing spacing requirements and they didnt want to comply. At a clinic to test whether they have the disease. Keep your distance. Dont congregate. Wash your hands. Ill get my results within five days.

09.01.2022 One of our best episodes of Australian Story. If you missed it last night on ABC TV + iview you can catch up now on iView https://iview.abc.net.au///series/2020/video/NC2002Q010S00

07.01.2022 I am extremely proud to be a tiny cog in the small ABC Emergency wheel at ABC Australia. Excellent producers and uncompromising EB Leads & EB Coordinators shaped the words I read. Working in partnership with state and territory agencies we brought their information to listeners around the clock to enable them to make the best decisions for themselves and their families as communities and livelihoods burned. ... 07.01.2022 35 years ago today I had my first paid shift at Fairfaxs 5DN 972 between 3pm - 6pm on Saturday afternoon. My job was to listen down the line to 3AW for the VFL scores, write down race results and answer the phones. Id go in before and after school to learn the ropes. I learned so much from so many talented people. Thank you for believing in me Gary Bau.

06.01.2022 As News Breakfast co-host Michael Rowland said on social media earlier today, there are too many people taking coffee on the sidewalk, masks down, gaily chatting away. In proximity.
