14.01.2022 Palmerston Regional Hospital Yesterday I was privileged to get a guided tour of the new Palmerston Regional Hospital so I could share with our followers a snea...k peek ahead of this month’s PRH Community Day on Saturday 11th August and its actual opening day to take patients - which will hopefully be at the end of this month. The whole time I was walking through rooms and seeing the amazing design, I felt very honoured to be witnessing this brand new, purpose built medical facility for Palmerston and the rural areas before it is filled with patients, and I also felt very excited by just how significant this hospital is, for us as residents. While it is nowhere near the size of our Royal Darwin Hospital, nor was it ever meant to be upon opening, the new 116-bed, $170 million hospital, which was jointly funded by the Australian ($110 million) and Northern Territory ($60 million) Governments does represent the largest investment in Northern Territory health services in more than 40 years. (and has been built for expansion as needed in the future) On their website it describes on completion, Palmerston Regional Hospital will be a modern and contemporary health facility, providing a range of specialised health care services, including: emergency department operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week state-of-the-art rehabilitation day surgery general medical ward *maternity services geriatric evaluation and management (GEM) outpatient clinics *Please note like many other hospital openings in Australia, clinical services will increase gradually over the first 18 months, so maternity services and others will open over time and won’t be available in full upon opening it will be staged to ensure patient needs and patient safety continues to be met. The Northern Territory Government have announced a Community Day for Saturday 11th August where the public can check out the new PRH ahead of its official opening. Visitors will get the opportunity to tour areas of the hospital and become familiar with the layout and services offered at the new facility. Access for the general public will be via a PARK AND RIDE service ONLY as the hospital is not officially opened. So you can’t drive there yourself on this day. Buses will leave every 15 minutes from the Palmerston Civic Centre car park, near the Palmerston Post Office on 5 Ash Lane (off University Avenue) in Palmerston. It is approximately a 10 minute ride to get to the hospital. The park and ride service will also include wheelchair-accessible vehicles. They have anticipated thousands of people wanting to visit on this day so please expect delays and you will need patience as the open time is limited to 9am-1pm only. Each tour will be structured with a certain amount of people per hour and a bit like an Ikea visit where you go in one way and the only way out is at the end - so if you don’t like crowds or waits, I would suggest you take your sneak peek via our photos and via all local mainstream media who will be covering it on the day.
