25.01.2022 Hello fellow gardeners. Winter is upon us and the landscape is clearly changing. Less watering is needed and more weeds are appearing. Best ways to cull weeds is shading them out by starving them of any sunlight, manual weeding or using a Herbicide. Pest will what they call over winter on weeds which basically means feed off the weeds while taking advantage of garden plants and breeding up for the growing season. If its very wet dont bother watering as ground or pots will not dry out fast enough to allow roots to do there job. No use in fertilising outdoor plants because of the slow activity of plant roots taking up nutrients. Mulching is a good idea to keep an more consistant soil temperture.

21.01.2022 Hi to all the garden do gooders that have suvived the Winter and hopefully your gardens to. Its been a relatively dry Winter which means the ground is dry as far as the ground goes. The topsoil is where plants mostly live in and then under that is the subsoil. All soils have a profile thats made of different horizons. Gardeners mostly deal with the topsoil that is most important for plant success. Most plants love good drainage and that is why a loam soil is best because ...it has the right balance of sand, silt and clay. Like ourselfs everyone is unique so soil preference amoung plants is varied. When it comes to fruit and veg the soil needs Nutrients and minerals because they are hungry feeders much like ourselves but we dont give back much if little compared to what they provide in return. By creating a system of collecting rainwater and returning food scraps by way of composting to feed plants is lessing the impact on our eco system. This can be done on different scales of production like our council that mixers food scraps with greenwaste by way of compositable bags, or just having a compost used in the backyard. Something as small as that is better than doing nothing at all.

19.01.2022 Hi fellow greenthumbs out there. November has arrived and so to has the heat. Good idea to retreat pot plants back to there protective area of the garden until Autumn comes around. last real month to get the best out of your plants by feeding them. Whether it be a fast liquid fertiliser applied with sprayer or a slow release pellet that can release nutrient when wet, this is the time before evaporation rates start to rise. Remember to drain that burning hot water out of the hose before watering anything you dont want to kill. Mulch to help with moisture. Be water wise and protect yourselfs and young ones from the sun.

07.01.2022 The Summer season has struck again and will be sure to show its presence, and leave its mark by the time the early Autumn starts again. Ways to prepare for the brut force of the Summer sun is through netting and shade cloth draped over any susceptable plants especially herbs and F & V. A good way to ease the damage potentially caused can be by early misting of foliage in the morning and evening with plenty of mulch to help with less evaporation. Pots will need daily watering... and wetting agents are a good product for the season ahead. I am a big advocate on using drip water systems. this is how most large supply nurseries are able to grow large shrubs and trees, but can work with any plant. It saves on water and the root systems love it. Basically it is one of the easiest systems to set up. If you have the time you can basically leave it on overnight and know your water bill won't go through the roof when you get it. Unlike a soaker hose it needs to be protected from direct sunlight to prevent water in hose heatïng up. Thanks for reading and I hope this helped. Enjoy the festive season and congratulations on you and your garden surviving another year. See you next year. See more
