25.01.2022 MOOLOOLABA: Huge thanks to Blueys photography for snapping these shots of our latest Algae Blooms! Although these pics were taken at Mooloolaba it is up and dow...n the coast at the moment and, fortunately, it is very harmless! Our subtropical climate on the Sunshine Coast provides warm and sunny conditions which can assist these algae called Trichodesmium to bloom in our waters. FUN FACT: These blue-green algae are commonly known as sea sawdust, whale sperm, whale food and sea scum During extended calm periods gas vacuoles cause the algae to rise to the water surface. Once at the surface it forms clumps which on close inspection appear to consist of little brown bundles of threads. The blooms can occur throughout the year but are most common between August and January when they can form very large slicks, as seen here. Are they toxic? These blooms are harmless to people but if they deplete the oxygen content of the water, they can cause death to aquatic animals. 20.01.2022 SUNSHINE COAST WASTE COLLECTION DELAYIt may take longer for your bins to be emptied this week. Please be assured, we will still collect your waste but there ...may be a delay. General waste bins (red or dark green lids) will be emptied first. Recycle and garden waste bins may not be emptied on your normal scheduled day. WHAT YOU CAN DO Put your bins on the kerbside the night before your normal collection day. Please leave your bins on the kerbside until theyve been emptied. How the delay may impact you Bins may not be emptied on your normal collection day Bins may be emptied at an earlier or later time than usual Waste, recycling and garden waste bins may not all be emptied on the same day In some areas, collection services will run much later than normal and into the evening. Whats the problem? During routine maintenance, our waste collections contractor identified a safety issue with their trucks, which means that less trucks are available to carry out your normal service. Safety is our priority! We apologise for any inconvenience this causes you. The safety of our contract drivers and other road users is our highest priority, so we will only return to the full service schedule when we are sure the trucks are safe again. We are working with our waste contractor to fix the issue as soon as possible. We will keep your updated via Facebook and our website https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au//Bin-Collection-Servi

19.01.2022 ALMOST 600 JOBS TO BE CREATED, CAR PARKS TO VANISH, AS PART OF $11 MILLION FORESHORE UPGRADE, STARTING NEXT MONTH The first stage of an $11 million dollar u...pgrade to the Mooloolaba Foreshore is to begin in October, creating hundreds of jobs and costing dozens of car parks. It will include a new boardwalk linking Alexandra Headland Bluff and Mooloolaba, parks and entertainment spaces for events. It will also include a replacement of a section of the seawall, sheltered barbecue area and new community buildings and facilities. The boardwalk works are due to start in November this year and are scheduled to be completed in mid-2021, weather and site conditions permitting. The parking lot on the former caravan park site will be removed to provide "a safe construction zone". It will later be redeveloped into parkland, once the multi-deck car park in Mooloolaba finishes construction. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the northern precinct of the foreshore will become "a new regional public parkland". "The project has the potential to stimulate construction jobs and flow-on benefits to businesses across the region." Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the $4.5 million put in by the Queensland Government will help support jobs and industry hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

05.01.2022 In this months throwback image, we take a break from the aerials (as impressive as they are!) and take a look at the difference that 80 years can make at Alexa...ndra Headlands "Alex Corner" . Its hard to believe that this popular location to watch surfers, catch up with friends, have a picnic or enjoy a beer was once prime farmland on the edge of the sea. Weve been unable to find definitive information on the house in the 1939 image, but we believe that this cottage was one of the many red-roofed seaside cottages built by Woombye residents in the 30s. From the 1930s to 1940s Alexandra Headland was well known as a place of relaxation - with many people camping along the beachfront despite only a few public facilities at those times. The Presbyterian Church Youth Camps staff began to consider Alexandra Hostel as a future campsite and negotiations to purchase the land began. Between the 40s and 50s, the areas beaches were recognised as some of the richest assets in the shire, resulting in some funding for public facilities for those who camped in the area as well as changing sheds and toilets . We wonder who resided in this seaside farm back in 1939 - Were sure theyd be amazed at how different it is nowadays! Do you happen to know the history of Alex Corner?
