25.01.2022 Sadly the total number of protected species killed is likely much larger because the vast majority of waterways where duck shooting is allowed, are not monitored.

25.01.2022 I am sharing this video to reiterate how important it is that animals are represented in our political systems. The path I choose to take in my role is a proactive one. I won't always agree with the government, but where I can, I would prefer to work with them to achieve positive outcomes. ... Today's announcement to reopen pet grooming in Melbourne as of September 28 for animal welfare reasons is a clear example of that. To some, it might seem small, but for many matted dogs and cats across metro Melbourne as we head into warm weather - this is a great outcome. Thank you to those from the grooming and veterinary community who worked with me to achieve this.

24.01.2022 The headline says it all. We need to change our relationship with animals - or there are only more pandemics to come.

24.01.2022 Tonight, Im chatting with Dr Jacquie Rand. Dr Rand is Emeritus Professor of Companion Animal Health at The University of Queensland (UQ) and Executive Director and Chief Scientist for the Australian Pet Welfare Foundation. The Australian Pet Welfare Foundation is the peak research body and advocate for pet welfare in Australia. As a not-for-profit organisation, it specialises in evidence-based solutions for reducing euthanasia in animal welfare shelters and local government ...facilities. Professor Rand has an outstanding research career in veterinary science spanning 45 years and is recognised as an international leader in two research fields - companion animal health and shelter medicine. She has worked extensively in shelter research, including collaborative studies over 14 years with the RSPCA, Animal Welfare League and local governments. See more

23.01.2022 Howard was killed for separation anxiety. If you are a Victorian resident, you have until TOMORROW to sign for him. Together, we've smashed the record of the biggest petition to ever be tabled in the Victorian Parliament - but to really get the attention of the Government, we need to make it even bigger.... Howard was only given SIX DAYS in foster carer. When his carer asked the shelter for support from a behavioural specialist, the shelter told the carer to return Howard so he could have knee surgery. They assured her that he would not be killed. They lied. Howard never had his surgery. The shelter killed him instead of giving him the time and support he needed to settle into a new and unfamiliar environment. It's time to end convenience killing in Victoria. It's time to reform shelters. It's time to give rescue groups the opportunity to assist animals, instead of shutting them out. It's time for accountability and transparency. And it's time to ensure the shelters who do the right thing aren't tarnished by those who do the wrong thing. If you're a Victorian resident, please sign now for Howard, and the thousands of other animals just like him - https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/192

23.01.2022 This evening, I made a speech on the largest e-petition to ever be tabled in the Victorian Parliament - and I did it for Dash.

22.01.2022 The decision on whether to have a 2021 duck shooting season could be made as soon as next month. And the government still hasn't had the review they've been called on to do.

22.01.2022 "In one case, he said the owner tried to trim around their dogs ears, cutting an artery and leading to a Hollywood-style spurting of blood..." Grooming is a welfare issue. One that cannot wait. If the racing industry can continue running, why can't a service vital for the health and well being of many companion animals?

22.01.2022 Tonka here deserved so much better. After suffering 8 years of abuse before being abandoned at a shelter, a terrified Tonka reacted to a dog. He was scared in his new and unfamiliar environment. Under the current Code of Practice in Victoria... this is a death sentence.... Even though a rescue group and foster carer were lined up, Tonka was killed. Tonka was just scared after only ever knowing cruelty - he never hurt a human. Don't miss your opportunity to sign the petition for dogs like Tonka. Tomorrow, the largest ever parliamentary petition calling for shelter reform in Victoria will close. If you're a Victorian resident, please sign (and share): https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/192

22.01.2022 It was the worst thing Ive ever seen, I would never wish this on any animal." More families have lost their pets to suspected 1080 poison in recent weeks. One Queensland family lost 5 dogs in a matter of hours. Where 1080 baiting is legal, this will always be the risk. Please sign the petition today.... https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/203

21.01.2022 Happy 22nd birthday to my wonderful, funny, talented son Eden. Your Mum and I are so incredibly proud of you. I love you so much, and can't wait to have a big slice of vegan cheesecake with you! (tell Mum she'll have to make another one!) Love you!

21.01.2022 As you will know, I am calling for life-saving reform in pounds and shelters. Alongside this, I am also calling for subsidised desexing programs to help end the abandonment of pets. These two issues go hand-in-hand, and will form the basis of the debate I will lead in parliament next month.

20.01.2022 I love cats. We have three of them. And I gave my thoughts on responsible care in the weekend's paper: We need to be mindful that wildlife existed on this land long before humans brought domesticated cats and dogs into the country. We have a responsibility - both to the native and domestic animals - to keep them safe.

19.01.2022 Wow - thank you everyone. Over 27,000 Victorians have signed the petition to end convenience killing in Victorian pounds and shelters, which I am the proud sponsor of. When I was contacted about this campaign by the young woman who had experienced heartbreak and devastation after her foster dog was killed by a large shelter, we agreed to set a goal of 10,000 signatures.... The fact that the goal was almost tripled sends a clear message to the Victorian Government - it is time to reform outdated and barbaric practices in our pound and shelter systems. No healthy, treatable animal should ever die because it is convenient. Together, we're one step closer to making that a reality. Next week I will table the petition, which well and truly sets a record for the largest ever e-petition to be tabled in the Victorian Parliament. This is just the first step of a major campaign, so please, keep an eye on my page for updates and information on how you can help.

19.01.2022 Have we not learned anything from 2020? We lived through (and are still living through) a pandemic caused by the exploitation of animals. Repairing our relationship with the world around us has never been more important.... That's why I am fighting an intensive sheep dairy proposed in my electorate - and will do all I can to stop it. We should be closing factory farms. Not building more.

19.01.2022 Rest in peace, Blacky... Blacky was abandoned and handed over to a shelter. The woman who found him called the shelter multiple times a week to follow up - letting them know that she had found a forever home for Blacky.... Sounds like the perfect solution, right? Well, despite being aware that an experienced dog owner was ready to take on Blacky's care, the shelter killed him instead. Blacky was never even trialed with a foster carer or listed for adoption - and he never had the chance to know love. The system is broken. It should be illegal to kill an animal when there are other alternatives. If you are with me, please sign the petition to end convenience killing in Victorian pounds and shelters (Victorian residents only): https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/192

18.01.2022 A proposed quarry in my electorate is threatening the lives of endangered species including the Southern Brown Bandicoot, Blackfish, Platypus and Yarra Pygmy Perch. A few weeks ago in Parliament, I asked the responsible Minister why they haven't assessed the impact on endangered species and cultural heritage. For more updates, join Save the Hopkins River - Stop the Quarry and sign their petition here: https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/220

18.01.2022 To some, this might seem like a trivial matter. But for those who have animals that need grooming for their own health and welfare, this is actually a dire situation. It is important for the government to have the legal framework to implement restrictions to stop the spread of coronavirus. You won't find me disagreeing there.... But it's also important for flexibility and reclassification based on evidence. If the racing industry can continue on supposed 'welfare' grounds - then why can't pet grooming? Vets are reporting a surge in animal injuries from unqualified home grooming jobs. There will be animals that if left too long, will suffer from painful matting, skin, ear and eye infections and overgrown nails. It is not a feasible position for urgent cases to be taken to the vet, as the government is proposing. Vets cannot simply absorb a whole industry while they are busier than ever. The Australian Veterinary Association has contacted my office to let me know they agree, and that it is urgent to reopen grooming in a safe manner. Thankfully, the government has reclassified grooming in Regional Victoria. Mobile grooming services can now get their COVID-safe plan. But that does not help the animals in metro areas, and I will continue my advocacy for them.

18.01.2022 Happy Dogs In Politics Day! As an Animal Justice Party AJP Victoria MP, today I am thinking about the ways we can change laws for our furry friends together. In less than a month, I will lead debate on reforming pounds and shelters to save the lives of dogs. ... I will call for accessible desexing, mandatory reporting of kill statistics, rescue group partnerships to save animals on death row and immediate reuniting. Today and every day, dogs and all animals must have a place in politics. Because so many decisions we make impact them. PS - remember, if youre looking for a doggo pal, choose adoption!

18.01.2022 Tippy and Fay are the latest victims of a poison that is banned almost everywhere else in the world. A poison so potent that the tiniest amount on a shared piece of bait was enough for this family to lose two of their beloved pets in the most horrific way. Like me, they have joined the call to ban 1080 poison in Australia. I'll do my best to ensure Victoria is the first.

18.01.2022 It's great news that regional Victoria is opening back up. As we turn our minds to recovery - one thing is clear. Duck shooting and regional tourism don't mix.... Will the government side with a handful of duck shooters ... or the countless Victorians who will be looking to holiday in our regional areas?

17.01.2022 We’re waiting for Dan Andrews to make a decision on the future of duck shooting and whether there will be a 2021 season. With fresh evidence that shows shooters aren’t complying with rules, and waterbird numbers down again by almost a quarter, announcing a season would be simply reckless. Help me keep up the pressure and send a message to your MP right now: https://animaljusticepartyvictoria.good.do/banduckshooti//... Face masks from Coalition Against Duck Shooting. Support their work and grab your own

17.01.2022 Submissions into revitalising Tower Hill Reserve were meant to be summarised and published in January, but never were. Now a "draft action plan" has been released that reads more like a shooting promo. This is an awful way to manage our wildlife reserves.

17.01.2022 In 2020, we got welcome rain. But it still wasn't enough to help our native ducks. I'm devastated to share that expert surveys have found native waterbird populations are down again by almost a quarter - 23%. ... To allow a duck shooting season in 2021 would be reckless.

16.01.2022 It's official. Today's budget is the most animal friendly in Victorian history! Let me be clear: this just wouldn't be the case if there wasn't the Animal Justice Party in parliament advocating for animals. Details to come in a few hours.

16.01.2022 The first of my consultation meetings on reforming wildlife rescue begin this weekend and will continue over the next month. This is the final callout to anyone within the community who'd like to take part. Please email [email protected] with your location and the work you do in the community (eg rescuer, carer, shelter etc). The treatment of the wildlife community over the bushfire season demonstrated just how vital reform is - and it is our goal to implement some... meaningful changes before the summer months. PS - If you have emailed and did not receive a response, please forward it again.

16.01.2022 Melbourne Cup is over but the cruelty isn't.

15.01.2022 So very proud to have gotten this done. Our wildlife rescuers and carers are heroes - and they deserve support.

15.01.2022 Tonight Im speaking with Dr Elaine Ong, Veterinarian and Founder of Vets for Compassion. Elaine has been the Principal surgeon and owner of the Balwyn Central Vet Hospital since 1995. She is the Founder of Vets For Compassion, a charity that sends vets and vet nurses to volunteer in underdeveloped countries in Asia. Teaching Vets to perform cat/dog birth control surgery, antirabies vaccinations and delivers animal welfare education. As well as being the Principal Trainer of ...the Train the Trainers Project in Asia. As you all know we recently took some really positive steps forward for wildlife in parliament. After I introduced a bill to establish a new authority for wildlife rescue, modelled off other emergency services, like the SES and CFA - the government came to the table and agreed to work with me to fix wildlife rescue in Victoria. This new authority weve named Wildlife Rescue Victoria couldnt have happened without people like Elaine providing me with advice and information around the changes we need. As a vet on the front line of the Victorian Bushfires, Elaine shares her thoughts on this new model and how she believes it will benefit wildlife.

15.01.2022 I have some incredible news to share. A few weeks ago I asked you to join me in writing an objection to a horrific mega-feedlot proposed in my electorate. I am so pleased to say today that the application has just been withdrawn, with Moorabool Shire Council acknowledging a large number of objections.... Together, we've just spared thousands of gentle cows from a life of suffering, and stopped the destruction of the beautiful surrounding environment and native wildlife.

14.01.2022 Yesterday was a great day for animals. We saw the most animal-friendly budget in Victorian history. We're making progress. And it is important to celebrate the wins. But there is still a long way to go. While I thank the government for their support on some animal welfare issues, there are others in urgent need of addressing.... That's why I read in a motion called for the 2021 duck shooting season to be cancelled. I will never stop fighting until we achieve a ban.

14.01.2022 This is really important. We're facing an opportunity that might be once in a lifetime. Victoria is throwing out the ineffective and outdated Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act - and replacing it with a brand new Animal Welfare Act.... There's two weeks left to have your say on shaping the new laws. My team has made a guide to help you make a submission. Please take the time to do it - for the animals.

13.01.2022 When a greyhound gets off the track, they dont know anything about this new world theyve been brought into - the patience that it takes is important. The reform we are calling for gives animals like Salem a second chance. No animal should be euthanised simply because its convenient. Please sign the petition to end convenience killing at Victorian shelters before it closes on Thursday.... https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/192

12.01.2022 "Between July 31 and August 25 as Victoria’s second coronavirus wave gained momentum three different strains of avian influenza were detected across six Victorian farms. That included three egg farms, two turkey farms and one emu farm. At least 390,000 birds were culled as a result."

12.01.2022 Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of animals involved in historic zoonotic events or current zoonosis are domestic (livestock, domesticated wildlife and pets), which is logical as the contact rates are high.

12.01.2022 Desexing needs to be available to everyone and it needs to encourage rescue intake, not deter it. National Desexing Month is a wonderful initiative offering low-cost procedures for both dogs and cats. I will be working on extending these subsidies year round to ensure far less animals end up in pounds and shelters across the state. More to come on this soon.

11.01.2022 Even with the windows left down, dogs are at risk of dying when they are left inside cars on hot days, where temperatures can climb above 50 degrees in just 6 minutes. Last year I raised this issue in Parliament, shortly after it became illegal to leave a dog in a car on a hot day. Unfortunately, it still happens. 6 minutes is exceptionally fast, by the time you notice that a dog is trapped, it could be too late. ... Use your best judgement on this one. Call the police. If the dog appears distressed, don’t hesitate to do the right thing. And a reminder, animals left at home without adequate shade and water during the day are also at risk. Never walk your dog in extreme heat and advise those you see doing so of the risks. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.

11.01.2022 In only a matter of time, a decision will be made on the fate of the Kinley Kangaroos. They could be massacred to make way for housing development ... or given a new home under a comprehensive and professional translocation plan. Today I made it clear in parliament there is only one option the community will accept.

10.01.2022 To coincide with Trans Awareness Week, last week in parliament I dedicated my member statement to a project I was so proud to be a part of: A wonderful book and animated video of a young trans dinosaur named Jaxasaurus, who through the help of his friend Sallasaurus, was able to find his roar and be proud of who he is. I am chuffed to be featured as Andiplodicous (naturally a plant eater!) and to stand alongside the Comishasaurus Ro Allen.

10.01.2022 Cheers to the most animal friendly budget in Victorian history!

10.01.2022 Grasso the hairy nosed wombat, like thousands of others, was infected with mange. The devastating skin disease caused by parasitic mites had left his skin crusted, bleeding and constantly irritated. His eyes and ears were so affected he could barely see, hear or even smell. The nocturnal animal was out grazing during the day, desperate for nutrients because of his raised metabolic rate but he was gradually wasting away. Untreated, he faced a certain and agonising death L...uckily for Grasso, over the period of 25 days he was treated in the wild by volunteers. Qualified carers and often landowners that happen to have wombats on their property have become largely responsible for beating the spread - but through lack of support it's taking a toll. Mange is what could put wombats on the critically endangered list within the next 30 years. That’s why I’m asking the Victorian Government to act now, supporting treatment and carers in this years budget.

09.01.2022 1080 poison is simply vile. Cruel, indiscriminate, and an agonizing death for all animals who consume it. My NSW colleagues and I are committed to pushing to end it's use ( and PAPP as well) in our States, but Australia must join the overwhelming majority of other countries and ban it nationally. Let all State Environment Ministers know what you think they should do, as well as the Federal Environment Minister the Hon. Sussan Ley. Maybe this can be a time when we set the example for our New Zealand friends, and help them follow suit! @sussanleymp

09.01.2022 There is MILLIONS of dollars in today's budget for animals. Over the coming days, my team will provide more details. But I am pleased to share there is even more funding than we requested to roll out pound and shelter form - including more financial support than ever for rescue groups.... Equipment upgrades and service expansions for equine welfare and rescue groups. A treatment program for wombat mange. And funding for Wildlife Victoria's wildlife hotline - a service that had never been government funded, but we've just achieved for the second year in a row. As you can probably tell, I am extraordinarily happy. Before the Animal Justice Party was in parliament, animals barely got a look in. Now, we achieve big wins like this. It's a great day for animals.

09.01.2022 Tomorrow is budget day. And if my bids make the cut, it will be the most animal friendly budget in Victoria's history! Watch this space.

08.01.2022 Congratulations to my interstate colleague Emma Hurst - Animal Justice Party MP on this great outcome. I have been pushing for the same, non-lethal alternatives here in Victoria and will continue that advocacy with the Environment Minister and Agriculture Minister. Brumbies are in the situation they are through no fault of their own - and it is our responsibility to find a kinder option than a bullet.

08.01.2022 It is a disgrace that a billboard in Melbourne CBD condemning captive dolphin breeding was pulled after just 5 days. This campaign was an important education tool for Victorians, one that we may be able to sympathise more with after experiencing a lockdown - something they endure their entire lives.

08.01.2022 I just tabled the largest e-petition in the history of the Victorian Parliament - calling on the government to end pound convenience killing, and to allow rescue groups to save more animals. YOU made this happen. And it is only just the beginning. ... Tomorrow I will make a speech on why this reform is so important. Then next month, I'll bring pound and shelter reform as a topic for debate in the chamber, requiring the government to respond.

08.01.2022 At a time when there is so much hate, so much division, this is just beautiful. A timely reminder that through all the stress, sadness and anxiety our frontline medical workers are going through saving everyone's lives, even those who don't think the pandemic is real, that human beings can be capable of such stoicism, such love for their fellow beings that no matter what, to paraphrase the words, "They'll stand by you". (Big fan of The Pretenders by the way!)

07.01.2022 And in other news water is wet.

07.01.2022 This is why I support changing the speed limit on the Great Ocean Road in Marengo. Just this week another 2 wallabies on this dangerous section of road lost their lives one was a beautiful female wallaby with a little unfurred joey in her pouch. Changing the speed limit from 100 to 80 for a mere 8 kilometres of road will be barely noticeable to tourists and road users - but can literally save the lives of so many of our native animals.... The community wants this change, the local schools want this change, and wildlife carers do too. I hope the Minister for Roads will call on Regional Roads to do the right thing. But in the meantime, please remember to always slow down for wildlife.

06.01.2022 Today is the final day of Trans Awareness Week. We are proud to be a Rainbow Family, with two trans adult kids, Eden (pictured) and Kielan. This is a week to celebrate. ... To all my trans friends out there, especially those I haven’t met and trans youth: know that you are loved and I will continue to work for your rights, resources and support in your communities.

06.01.2022 Last summer the world watched in horror as a beautiful country burnt, showing an outpouring of love for all our precious wildlife. With the true impact of this catastrophe still unknown how can our government continue to allow the commercial hunting of the kangaroo?"

06.01.2022 Many of you know about the Kinley kangaroos, a kangaroo mob landlocked in the Kinley development site in Lilydale. You would also know that I have been doing everything in my power to save these kangaroos. What you may not know is all the work that goes on behind the scenes and all the incredible work happening around the clock by many people to ensure a positive outcome is reached for these kangaroos. Today Im talking to veterinarian Dr Natasha Bassett, a companion animal ...vet who volunteers her time in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. She has been the triage vet for duck rescue since 2015 and worked in fireground search and rescue and triage, most recently in the Black Summer fires in NSW. As both a vet and a passionate local Tash got involved very early on with the bid to save the Kinley roos. As an experienced vet working around the clock Tash shares her experience of working on the frontline to save the mob.

06.01.2022 As many of you will know, I have supported the government in making difficult but important evidence-based decisions, formulated on expert medical advice. If a few more weeks in stage 4 is necessary to stop the spread of coronavirus - then that's what needs to be done. Just because I support the governments plan in principle, doesnt mean there arent areas that need tweaking, or where I disagree in detail.... When these restrictions first came into place, I wrote to the government with concern that dog grooming was deemed non-essential. Now that the government has extended restrictions, I have contacted them again today to say dog grooming must be reclassified for welfare. This new length of time will be far too long for many animals. For many breeds of dogs, and even cats, grooming is vital for animal welfare reasons. Dogs that go without regular grooming can end up with painful matting, skin irritation and overgrown nails, making it difficult to walk. Just like you can leave your home to go to the vet you should be able to leave your home to go to the groomer no matter where in Victoria you live. With more Victorians taking on a companion animal than ever before, it is vital that the government ensures they can safely get the care they deserve.

04.01.2022 Very pleased that the government has moved on this. Grooming is an animal welfare issue and that is now recognised under our restrictions. A great example of how working proactively with the government can achieve good outcomes.

04.01.2022 Every single one of these animals deserved better. Its too late for them now ... but we can change the future. Theres only a few hours to go. Lets make it count: https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/192

04.01.2022 Premier Dan Andrews says his government will support duck shooting as a recreational activity ‘provided the rules are followed’. But a recent survey of hunter knowledge by the government’s OWN department shows they don’t follow the rules - or in some cases, even know what they are. When it comes to shooter’s knowledge on animal welfare and personal and public safety when using firearms - the results are damning.... There is no way that the Premier and Agriculture Minister can let a duck shooting season go ahead this year. A decision is imminent and native ducks need you to take action: https://animaljusticepartyvictoria.good.do/banduckshooti//

04.01.2022 It’s been a good week for animals here at the Victorian Parliament. The budget has delivered for animals. This is why the Animal Justice Party needs to be here thank you for giving me the honour.

04.01.2022 In this pandemic, we often need to move quickly. When the hard border with South Australia was announced, I contacted my border councils to offer any help they might need. After a few phone calls, I was pleased to get clarity for the grain producers and transporters in West Wimmera Shire Council about crossing the border and returning, as well as those needing to get to Adelaide for vital medical appointments. Since then, a lot has changed. That’s the nature of this pandemi...c. But I'll keep advocating for Western Victoria as we work through this ever-changing environment. Many thanks to Mayor Bruce Meyer and the Department of Premier and Cabinet for moving quickly.

03.01.2022 886,000 domestic tourists went bird watching in 2019. If this article is anything to go by, the number is only set to grow. In comparison, there's a few thousand active duck shooters in Victoria.... The government needs to make a decision about whether they want bird shooting or bird watching on our wetlands - because the two can't go together. The choice is obvious.

03.01.2022 All the way back in February, dozens of koalas were massacred as land was cleared in Cape Bridgewater, near Portland. I know how distressing this massacre was to so many. I travelled there to assist with rescue efforts and witnessed some of the worst cruelty I have ever seen. Among the victims were survivors. And just yesterday, some were released. This video courtesy of Mosswood Wildlife will truly make your day.... I now also have a new update on the investigation to share with you, which can be read here: https://www.delwp.vic.gov.au//koala-incident-near-cape-bri I am sure I speak for everyone when I say I hope to see an outcome soon, so that there is finally justice for the koala massacre.

02.01.2022 A lot of hatred has been thrown around lately, with many people thinking that just because someone puts their hand up to serve their community, that somehow gives others the right to attack them in the most disgusting way. No, it doesn't.

02.01.2022 Please watch this important feature on pounds and shelters by The Feed SBS. This is exactly why I advocated for rescue groups in this year's budget and it's why I'm working with the government to end convenience killing across Victoria. Last month, we won significant pound and shelter reform including the right for rescue groups to save death row animals and yesterday we secured the funds to do exactly that. Over 5 million dollars in grants to rehome pets. With this we will... save lives. Thank you to every single person who has worked to get us this far. I'll have more to share with you soon.

01.01.2022 "Despite evidence across this country, such as rock engravings, showing that Indigenous Australians have been here for centuries, we are forced to prove our Blak connection to a white law in order for us to be recognised within our individual groups. This theme reflects our existence in a country that didn’t even acknowledge we were here until 1992" - Rangi Hirini

01.01.2022 TAKE ACTION: Joe the pigeon is set to be killed by the Federal Government after being deemed a 'biosecurity risk'. Joe made an extraordinary 13,000 kilometre journey from the United States to a Melbourne backyard last month - and I think he should instead be put into quarantine and allowed to live.... Agree with me? Sign the petition for a pigeon pardon now: https://animaljusticepartyvictoria.good.do/takejoeoffdea//
