19.01.2022 "Faces 1", 2020, Oil on Card, 8-1/4" x 11-3/4" (A4) Available for purchase (link in bio) Read artist's statement... Andy Merrigan describes the central focus of his work as 'representing modern life so that it fits in the timeline of historic artistic conversation', this means rendering subjects that are very much 'of today' so that they can sit comfortably on the wall next to a painting by an artist like Boucher.... Merrigan is a PhD graduate from the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, and has worked for over a decade in time-based art, published art, experimental theatre, and sound art - as both the creator and the exhibitor of other's work. Merrigan then took time off from exhibiting to write a novel about experimental cinema in the 1960's. Since then, Merrigan become an oil painter, and has had an exhibition running every day for over two years. He is currently exhibiting at the Simply Gallery in regional NSW. "Faces 1" is part of a series of artworks rendering human features with basic strokes, bringing the abstract closer to the art of calligraphy to express painting with a freedom of facility and tact. Let me ask you a question, which is more difficult to paint and blend and erase until the artwork appears like a photograph, or to use one single brush stroke, perfectly placed as soon as it is laid down? Every stroke in these artworks are painstakingly prepared, and every stroke successful or failed is presented for your judgement, criticism, or appreciation. The result is often beauty within simplicity, and a relationship with the artist, as you can see the trace of his hand at work.
