09.01.2022 Time for another pie review Millicent is a sleepy country town in the backwaters of South Australia, servicing the local farmers and paper mills. What you migh...t not know, and probably don’t, is that it is also the home of Andys Bakery. Getting directions from a local took me down a side street, away from the town’s one main road and toward a rather nondescript set of buildings with angle parking outside. Plastered on the white painted windows were decals proudly declaring a series of pie and pastie wins dated 2014. A good sign to be sure, but a lot can change in the 7 years hence, and I was keen to find out. Entering the store yielded a classic country bakery scene. A selection of cream filled buns, tasty looking slices, various bread products, and of course the pie warmer proudly taking centre stage. I politely awaited my turn behind a steady stream of elderly ladies seemingly purchasing their supplies for a CWA morning tea. I was grateful for the delay, as I needed to peruse the generous selection of pie flavours on offer. Always on the lookout for a steak and cheese, I picked the closest pie available, the venerable beef, bacon and cheese. First of all, I was struck by the pastry choice. Short crust on the base, not too thin, not too thick, and a nice golden flaky puff of the top. I usually prefer a puff all around, but in this circumstance they had nailed it. Good pastry flavour, no dreaded cardboard texture, and not oily either. I thought the bacon pieces on top were a nice addition, but ultimately unnecessary, as usually these tasty morsels have been baked hard as a rock, and this was the case here. I suspect their most useful purpose was to identify the pie in the warmer. Enough of the preamble, let’s get to the meat of the review. And it was excellent. No sign of gristle, and the mince was full of flavour, and just tasted of quality ingredients, with a delicious chewy texture. The icing on this particular cake was the cheese. All too often a pie has cheese by name but not by nature, leaving the poor pie eater wondering where it might be hiding. Not so today, with the cheese ample and evident, and carrying a delicious sharp flavour, so important in adding to the overall palate profile. Temperature was spot on, nice and hot, but not too hot, just right. Structure was one of the few weak points, I suspect due to the use of the short crust, but thankfully there were no blow outs or escaping filling, although it was a near thing. So if you should happen to find yourself passing through Millicent, do yourself a favour, drop by the bakery and elbow the old ladies out the way and get your hands and tastebuds on a truely excellent pie. 9/10 See more
