23.01.2022 Is the "Six-day Bathurst 1000" the biggest indication yet that the sale of Supercars to ARG/TLA is only a matter of time. Thoughts

04.01.2022 What does the future hold for the Supercars? The Australian Touring Car Championship has been in existence since 1960 offering sedan racing that manufacturers hung off. David McKay in his Jaguar Mark 1 was the inaugural champion. Second was Bill Pitt and third was Bob Jane also in a Jaguar. Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday phrase was commonly used when the series was full of makes and models with professional and armature drivers competing.... The mid 60’s saw the Ford mustang in the hands of Beechey and Geoghegan take the honours. It was a fantastic array of makes and models competing at venues all over Australia to packed grandstands. The 70’s and 80’s brought a new era with dealer team’s running cars under the guise of Ford, Holden and Mazda leading the way. Manufacturer support was huge as they could see the relevance of the cars that raced were the same base car you could buy off the showroom floor. Group A came and went and then an all V8 formula was announced as the replacement for Group A in Australia. It took a while to get going and eventually morphed into the Supercars we have today. So, the million dollar question is what’s going to happen when ARG/TLA are announced as the new owners of the series. Im going to have a stab at what I think will happen. 2022 will be the final swansong for the current supercar and Gen 3 will never see the light of day as its market irrelevant. 2023 will see the series rebranded to the TCR series with a much larger grid capacity competing for the Australian Touring Car Championship. I’m going as far as to say 40 plus cars for sprint rounds and more for Bathurst that will include international teams and drivers. Support to TCR will be TA2, S500, Touring Car masters and rotation of other ARG classes including production cars. Super 2 Super 3 and the Super Utes should be moved to the Shannon’s Series. Existing Supercar teams will have the opportunity to run a plethora of existing TCR cars available world-wide and represent manufacturers similar to the HMO Hyundai relationship. In Australia we must get with the program! V8’s are dead and not what’s represented by manufacturers on the road. Economical hot hatch’s are what’s selling and being sold to the masses world-wide and TCR fits that bill very well. One Thousand TCR cars have been built world-wide since 2015 with 20 models from 15 manufacturers in competition. It brings me back to what I initially stated. In the 60’s 70’s and 80’s the Australian Touring Car Championship was full of makes and model’s and it was great for the punter on the hill. Will this ever pan out. I certainly hope so! What will the 26 current Rec holder’s think of this plan? Who cares as the sport is much much bigger than them and there've been paid out? Please like are share.
