19.01.2022 We know it can be hard as a parent to prepare your child to get tested for COVID-19 You can help your child feel calm by explaining to them what’s going t...o happen and why (‘you’re a superhero saving lives’). Let them know that the staff will be wearing masks, caps, gowns and gloves to protect themselves and others. Let them know that they’ll put a little stick with a soft end in their nose and mouth, and that it won’t hurt but might feel funny. It might help to take some deep breaths together before you go in and to schedule a fun ‘reward’ after the test at home (your child will need to isolate until they’ve received a negative test result and their symptoms have resolved). If your child doesn’t like being touched or gets scared in clinical settings, let the staff know and they’ll work out a way to keep your child feel calm and comforted. 17.01.2022 Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease that can spread through the air, with the particles able to remain in the air for minutes or even hours. The main sy...mptom is a blistering, itchy skin rash that may appear over several days. The rash is usually more noticeable on the torso and can also affect the scalp and the inside of the mouth, nose, and throat. Chickenpox can be infectious from 2 days before the rash appears until at least 5 days after the rash first appears and once all blisters have crusted over. In childhood, chickenpox is usually a mild illness and can be so mild it might not be noticed. Chickenpox may be particularly severe in children with leukaemia, pregnant women and young babies. Keep your child home if they are showing any symptoms and speak to your GP as soon as possible. Importantly, immunisation against chickenpox is available.
