23.01.2022 Flashback to a time of locals lining the streets in anticipation of Father Christmas arriving on the back of a ute... Carols and crowds at the park... This was the Angaston Christmas Parade 2018! Had our year been a ‘normal’ one, we would have enjoyed our Angaston Christmas Town Night last night - always the last Friday in November. Let’s hope next year we can all celebrate the festive season as a community once again. ... #angaston #angastonbarossa #myangaston #mybarossa #angastonchristmas #angastonchristmasparade #maybenextyear

23.01.2022 Wonderful to have the Angaston station restored and the location renewed as a busy community space. The railway coming to Angaston was so important for the town in 1911, particularly for the transportation of goods. Following WW1, the town band played as returned soldiers were greeted with great enthusiasm on the platform. Imagine the anticipation of the locals as they could see the steam, hear the whistle and smell the burning coal as the train carrying their loved ones drew... nearer. While you’re pondering the history of the location, why not wander up the street and visit the Angaston Blacksmith Shop & Museum on the weekend. Kids love watching the smithy on the forge - and it’s out of the drizzle too! Open Sat & Sun 1-4pm. . . . #barossaadventurestation #angaston #myangaston #mybarossa #angastonheritage

22.01.2022 So happy to be saying welcome back to the Angaston Blacksmith Shop & Museum - from this Sat & Sun, 1-4pm. #welcomebacksa #seesouthaustralia #mybarossa #myangaston #angastonblacksmith #angaston #barossavalley

20.01.2022 We're excited to be re-opening the Angaston Blacksmith Shop & Museum on SATURDAY JUNE 13. We've been busy making sure that we comply with all the relevant rules and can't wait to welcome guests to the forge. See you soon! #angaston #myangaston #mybarossa #angastonblacksmith #blacksmith #weareback

18.01.2022 What a beautiful day for the Angaston Show! If you’re visiting the show today, please stop past our stand for a chat with Bill and Jan - we’re next to the Lions book shed. We have a little competition going - with a chance to win a blacksmith session or a bottle of Langmeil Blacksmith Cab Sauv. Plus we have a special tasting of some homemade currant jam - made using fruit harvested from the 140 year old Doddrigde Vine. #angastonheritage #myangaston #angastonshow #mybarossa

17.01.2022 It’s warm by the forge! Avoid the wind and drizzle this weekend and come in to have a yarn with the blacksmith. 17.01.2022 Take a peek inside the Angaston Blacksmith Shop & Museum this Father’s Day. Stroll up Murray Street after lunch for a look. The talented Joseph will be at the forge, with Leo as guide. 16.01.2022 It’s with great disappointment that we advise of the cancellation of the Barossa History Fair. We have also made the decision to close the Angaston Blacksmith Shop & Museum until further notice. We look forward to welcoming visitors back on the other side of this health crisis. In the meantime, when you’ve finished cleaning out your inbox and reorganising your digital photos, you might find time to do some family history research. Libraries SA have made Ancestry available for use at home - usually only available on library computers or by subscription. This might also be a great research/learning opportunity for students at home as well. Don't forget to use the NLA Trove website to help fill-in lots of detail. https://www.libraries.sa.gov.au/client/en_AU/digital/ Stay safe everyone.

15.01.2022 Turns out Doddridge House, a c1880s cottage and the location of our History Centre, needed some repairs! We are grateful to Michael, Darren and Clint Falkenberg from Moculta Masonry Builders as well as Mick Wegener from Custom Cladding for sorting out the stormwater issues that have been causing damage to the building. With the rain here today this is very timely. Thanks to these quality tradesmen

13.01.2022 What do you think of our new signage at the Blacksmith? Our dedicated volunteers, Leo & Robert, have done a great job installing our new printed signs. 10.01.2022 With the school holidays drawing to a close, have you managed to visit the Angaston Blacksmith Shop & Museum or the Angaston History Centre with the kids yet? Kids are fascinated watching the blacksmiths at work on the forge - one of the only places you can see this in South Australia. Our exhibition celebrating the centenary of the Angaston Hospital closes on Jan 31. ... 09.01.2022 The garden at Doddridge House is getting a spruce up! Many thanks to Jenni Evans Design, Adelaide Horticultural Solutions, keen gardeners Jo & David Adams as well as our committee members Ian Williamson and Bill Gransbury. #workinprogress #angastonheritage #angastonlocal #myangaston

08.01.2022 This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Angaston District Hospital. In 1920 a board of management and trustees, made up of prominent locals, paid 1750 to Dr Cowan for the hospital building. Money had been obtained from private subscriptions, fundraising efforts and a government subsidy in order for the community to establish a public hospital. After some improvements to the site including an isolation block, new large ward, septic drainage and a mortuary buildi...ng, a fete was held for the opening on 15 Oct 1921. The doors were opened to hundreds of supporters who listened to speeches and attended stalls. A key fundraiser for the cause was the ‘Ugly Returned Soldier’ competition which raised a considerable 211 15/ (approx $17,000 in today’s currency)! We are seeking stories, images and documents that relate to the history of the hospital for a new exhibition. Can you help? Please get in touch via [email protected]. State Library of SA, B26171. 07.01.2022 Here's an interesting post from the State Records of SA - showing a sample of Angaston marble from their collection. Angaston marble has been used in buildings across the state as stairways, balustrades, columns and foundation stones - but most notably, huge quantities were shipped to London for the construction of Australia House in 1915. The marble has been used for headstones, sculptures and monuments including the Angaston War Memorial of which the pedestal is pink marble..., the base and stairs white marble. The South Australian National War Memorial on North Tce was finally unveiled on Anzac Day 1931, the great winged 'figure of Duty' overlooking the bronze sculpture was cut in white Angaston marble. #angastonheritage #angastonmarble #marble #srsa #myangaston #mybarossa

06.01.2022 Well it turned into a glorious afternoon in Angaston today as we were busy in the History Centre preparing for the Angaston Hospital 1920-2020 exhibition that starts next weekend. The garden is looking lovely and there were plenty of visitors to the blacksmith as well. 06.01.2022 Lest we forget District of Angaston WW1 & WW2 Honour Rolls are in the foyer of the Town Hall. Have you stopped to look at them? Do you have a relative listed? The WW1 board was carved by George Thorn. The names of his brothers Otto, Harold & Perce are listed. What a beautifully crafted memorial.... #remembranceday2020 #remembranceday #lestweforget #angaston #angastonheritage #angastonbarossa #myangaston #mybarossa #warmemorial #saheritage

05.01.2022 Posted @withregram @angastonheritage Today we acknowledge 100 years of service by the Angaston District Hospital. On October 1, 1920 the facility changed hands to become a public institution. The first baby, Kevin Wishart, was born that very morning. We are grateful to all those who have contributed to this organisation over the past century to attend to the health care needs of our community, especially our very own Dr Bill Gransbury! ... Visit our exhibition at 21 Murray Street to learn more about the history of our hospital. Open from this Sat 3 Oct. 04.01.2022 HAPPY NEW YEAR! We are looking forward to a busy year ahead. On the calendar already is the Barossa History Fair in May plus exhibitions to feature the history of the railway in Angaston and the centenary of the Angaston Hospital. Don't forget we have the Angaston History Centre open on Wednesdays from 10am-3pm and Saturdays from 1-4pm with the 'Christmas in Angaston' exhibition. The blacksmith is open as usual on weekends from 1-4pm. ... Thankfully today's mild temperature has been a relief from the extreme heat. Have a look at this article about New Year's Day 1890 (Kapunda Herald, 3 Jan 1890, p 3.) - worth the read just for the beautifully descriptive phrasing. Despite it being "frightfully hot" that day, the Angaston Picnic at the Recreation Park went ahead - bicycle and mile races included! #angastonheritage #myangaston #angaston #mybarossa #onthisday

04.01.2022 We have such talented blacksmith artists volunteering at our forge. John Fergus whipped up this little snail for a blacksmith competition while on duty yesterday! Open today 1-4pm #angastonblacksmith #angaston #angastonlocal #myangaston #blacksmith #mybarossa

04.01.2022 Can’t wait to use our beautiful new aprons at the forge! Huge thanks to Carol at Sunshine Barossa Australia for going above and beyond to make these aprons look so amazing. 03.01.2022 Who has stopped to read the blue plaques around town? These signs are placed on buildings of significant historical value. Congratulations to Robyn at the Angaston Masonic Lodge - the latest recipient of a blue plaque. #angastonheritage #myangaston #angaston #mybarossa

03.01.2022 Our next project at the History Centre will celebrate one hundred and ten years since the arrival of the first train in Angaston. It took many years of negotiations and work to get the line built but once established, the rail connection became vital to Angaston’s prospects. Do you have any recollections about the station or catching the train? Do you have any photos, stories or items you could contribute to our exhibition? We would love to hear from you. Our display will be ready to coincide with the Barossa History Festival, May 1 & 2. #angastonheritage #angastonbarossa #angastonlocal #angastonrailwaystation #railwayheritage #mybarossa #barossahistoryfair #barossaheritage

01.01.2022 Apart from the War Memorial, you may have seen honour rolls in the town hall or a local church. Pictured is the Angaston Primary School Roll of Honour - unfortunately lost to history. Thankfully an old photo exists in the APHS archive to remind us of the former students who enlisted in the first world war. Note the date on the right is not complete, possibly indicating the board was made before the end of the war. With ANZAC Day approaching, now may be an opportune time to st...art some research or a home-schooling project perhaps. For defence and war service records (all WW1 and some WW2) visit the National Archives of Australia (NAA) website. Personnel documents may be difficult to decipher, but can reveal fascinating details such as medical records, medal citations and letters. A significant date (such as a wounding or death) can be further researched in the unit war diaries found on the Australian War Memorial website. These documents are fascinating (if legible) and give context to the event, such as significant campaigns or battles. While we naturally tend to think the best of service personnel, we can sometimes come across less than flattering information. Court martial records are also open to view. Look further into the type of role that was performed during service, such as infantry, artillery, engineering, medical. A stretcher bearer had a vastly different experience to a sapper or a cook. How was their life affected? Search Trove for mentions before and after the war. Are there any family stories - do these match the records? Finally, can you put a face to the name? The State Library of SA and the State Archives sites have photo collections of WW1 soldiers. That should keep you busy for a while... Happy researching! #angastonheritage #anzac #myangaston #mybarossa APHS
