09.01.2022 An Open Letter to our Netball Spectators Have you noticed the person on the court in white? That’s our umpire, they are someone’s friend, neighbour, daughter, ...sister, mother, aunty or grand mother and they have an identity. The biggest threat to our game locally, in the next two years will be the lack of umpires and it’s partly your fault as a spectator or coach. Your derogatory comments, your calls of not again or every time, your grunts and groans when an umpire makes a decision that doesn’t go your way. These calls that are loud enough to be heard by the people around you, as well as the umpire, have an effect and it is not a positive one. For umpires to be developed, we need to put them up to the next level and in the early stages this may be a challenge and some mistakes may be made. That is to be expected, especially when a ball is passed 1200 times (at a minimum) during a game. At the same time the umpire is also checking on how the player got the ball, footwork, offside, obstruction, contact and the list goes on. I read an article the other day that broke it down to 22,800 decisions a match, so as the resident expert on the sideline, how do you think you would go? Would you be perfect? We bring our children up to respect people, but when it comes down to sport, somehow that is thrown out the window. Why? Some say it’s passion, but I disagree, as there are plenty of sports fanatics that are passionate about the game that can stand on the sideline without needing to make derogatory comments towards anyone. As a spectator or coach you have the option to put on the whites and show us exactly how good you are, or learn how to zip it. Let’s let the umpires do their job, without fear of reprisal and remember, they are someone’s friend, neighbour, daughter, sister, mother, aunty or grand mother and they have an identity. Thank you umpires, for what you bring to the game. Let's all make a concerted effort to be the bigger person and make time to thank the umpire for the job they have just completed. Let's work together to build them up, not tear them down. Let's encourage them and make them feel valued for the job they have just done. Together, we all play a part in changing the culture towards our umpires. Let's choose a great, positive, encouraging culture. Yours In Netball Anthony Lewis President
