23.01.2022 Wanna know why this girl is called a Ringtail Possum? Pepper was found weighing 90 gms and being pecked to death on the ground by birds, we thought her ta...il might never work properly, but look how it works now(!) as she approaches 450 gms and a soft release size. Before a ringtail moves through the trees, they secure their current position with their tail, then they take a chance on moving through their arboreal environment. Only when they have 2 holds somewhere else will they let the tail go, this ability is critical for their survival.

22.01.2022 Look what evolution and the intelligence of nature did with the "hand" and "fingers" for bats! ... they are the only flying mammals on Earth. Did you know the m...ums fly at night with her pup hanging on under the armpit? When are we going to give more respect and care to these keystone creatures? They deserve much much better than they are getting at present. I annotated this photo by Jurgen Freund (posted on a recent ABC news article). Thanks Jurgen

22.01.2022 I am an animal rescuer I have caught the mange, I have been bitten by the afraid, I have hugged the broken.... I have fallen in love 1,000 times, And broke my heart 1,000 times. My work is never done, My phone is never quiet, My wallet is always empty, But my heart is always full. Rescuing one animal may not change the world, but for that animal the world will be changed forever. Doing what I love is freedom, Loving what I do is happiness. (Thank you whoever first penned that, sorry for my edits)

22.01.2022 I have been leading a small team to rescue wildlife from a wetland being drained for housing development. I personally captured around 250 yabbies over a week d...uring the draining of water, then 2 nights after it was done, I went for another check. There was just a puddle, it did not cover my gumboots, but ... right in the centre just barely under the water was this beauty. The largest Yabbie I have ever seen (captured here in the bottom of a 10L plastic bucket). I called him? the Grandaddy of the wetland. This was the last one I saw. UPDATE: I can assure you all the rescued animals (turtles, yabbies, shrimp, frogs, tadpoles, frog spawn and even the leeches!) went to much bigger and safer wetlands (nearby). I am working on a short video and story of the rescues, will share it here soon.

17.01.2022 " The thing that we are still trying to get out there is for people to stop and check the pouches and drag them off the road. " Michelle at Our Haven is a volun...teer in the team. Our Haven is a wonderful organisation we had the priveledge to support during the fires alongside with WIRES and other organisations. You can visit and support Our Haven here - https://www.facebook.com/ourhavenwildlifeshelter Michelle writes " I am a volunteer at Our Haven Wildlife Shelter in Golden Beach. Joeys we get here are orphans of road kill and hunting and some from fence hanging tragedies. We luckily escaped the fires of last summer but are anxious about this coming one. That's pretty normal as we live surrounded by bush. At this time of year the mother kangaroos have little pouch joeys, from pinkies and velvets to fully furred bubs, who transition very well to human carers. So most often when a female is hit on the road there's a baby to rescue. The thing that we are still trying to get out there is for people to stop and check the pouches and drag them off the road. Just this morning I had to drag 2 wombats of the road, (boys luckily ) when heaps of cars had driven around them . In the last 3 weeks we have received 8 new joeys from road kill. At the moment we have 17 roos and 2 wallabies in our care. " Our haven is one of the nicest organisations we have been blessed to work with. If you need anything just ask.

13.01.2022 Wombats with mange - we never give up Mange Wombats can be hard and testing cases to take on because of the difficulty to access the animal regularly, but have ...a look at this case, we call him CHUBB. First 2 piks are from 26-Nov-2019. One pik on each side, just look at the poor little guy. He was dosed with cydectin and chloromide on open wounds he had scratched to the point of bleeding. The chloromide is antiseptic and fly repellant. Driving along this road, we would be mindful of CHUBB and if we saw him again, treat him again. We knew we might never see him again... Next sighting was 12-Apr-2020, some 5 months later. Treated him that day. Saw him 26-Apr, but he ran off. Saw him again 17-May, treated once more while he thought he was hiding in a log. Saw him yesterday and treated him again. So that is 4 treatments over 6 months. Have a look at the change! Final pik is 30-May-2020. We have seen this kind of transformation (with others) over many months even if the treatments are weeks or months apart. These results keep me motivated with mange wombats.

13.01.2022 Fences are a danger to wildlife The story that stands out this week is kangaroos caught in fences. The first image shows what happens to the poor buggers. This... boy was hanging upside down for many hours, with both toes twisted tight in 2 strands of fence wire and one strand of barbed wire. The #1 problem is stress and risk of death from myopathy (a stress related condition that causes organ failure). Prevention requires sedation and quiet handling. The #2 problem is nasty abrasions and open wounds of feet, toes and sometimes upper legs caused by the wire. The #3 problem is temporary paralysis. It's pretty much guaranteed to occur and recovery can take weeks to months. That's a real problem for carers that are stretched to their limits of physical, emotional and financial means. On top of that, these cases require regular sedation and bandage replacement during recovery. There are some injuries that are just "too much" but both cases this week were assessed as treatable. That means 2-3 times per week wound review, bandage refresh, possibly even physiotherapy whilst waiting for recovery. We are now working with another shelter that specialises in handling these cases, known as "fence hangers". We had one large male from Chiltern (picture 1) and one smaller male from Yackandandah mid week. They both required basic first aid and heavy sedation. We found a couple of generous people who drove 400+ km (one on Tuesday and again on Wednesday!) to transport the patients and meet the specialist carer down near Euroa/Seymour. We are very happy to report both patients doing well after 5 days, on their way to recovery. There is one image of each skippy resting at the shelter. They are now known as McChill and Tommy. Good luck boys. UPDATE: the roo in the first image was rescued and is recovering. That is McChill when we found him.

11.01.2022 Help us breed more bilby families like these curious creatures by contributing towards our Charleville bilby breeding facility upgrade. This upgrade will give ...us the ability to double our current annual bilby breeding program. But to get this project off the ground in the new year, we urgently need funds for: Five new creching/breeding pens for our breeding families to burrow and live in New nesting boxes for our new bilbies to be welcomed into the world An extension for a new hospital to cater to current and additional bilbies Additional equipment such as microchip reader, scales and food. This upgrade will also help give the bilby the best chance of re-populating throughout Australia. Any donation, big or small, will make a huge difference.

08.01.2022 A sound to warm a carers heart We often say the rescued animal has to "do their part" in the care, that means wanting to live and (mainly) feeding easily and we...ll. The sound of a little joey eagerly slurping their milk is so precious and delightful, here for your listening pleasure is little Silky the Ringtail Possum, slurping her way from 60 grams to 89 grams and beyond. https://soundcloud.com//silky-ringtail-possum-joey-drinkin

07.01.2022 You might like to talk to your local MP. Here is the form to fill out..

07.01.2022 #WARNING: Distressing footage #icymi After her mother was shot dead, this terrified joey tried to climb back into her pouch. Like a young child, the joey just w...anted to be with her Mum. And to feel safe. According to 68-year-old Hosking-Moore the joey was shot dead later that evening. The government and the RSPCA insist that the slaughter of kangaroos is humane. Could anyone really watch this footage and call it humane? Please help to end this cruelty by exposing it. Share this footage now in the hope that this joey's suffering can at least change hearts and minds. For this joey? (I'm so sorry little one)

07.01.2022 We need your help to breed more bilby babies (like Cliff and Gonzo ) in 2021! Be part of bilby-saving history and help fund our Charleville breeding facility u...pgrade today This upgrade will give us the ability to double our current annual bilby breeding program, and will be a game changer in helping us reach the goal of establishing free-living bilby populations in protected reserves around Australia.

07.01.2022 URGENT HELP DONATIONS NEEDED PLEASE HELP SAVE MORE WOMBATS SHARE THIS LIKE CRAZY We need your urgent help today. As we enter the summer months we urgently... need to finish off our critical ICU units which are used to treat our most injured wombats which come in normally in terrible conditions. It’s absolutely essential we can finish these as otherwise I’m afraid there is a risk we will have to turn wombats away. We’ve tried so hard to complete the facility but we just don’t have the money at present. We have everything lined up, the builders, the materials, everything is there. Our rescue tries so hard, answers every call. Our carers and volunteers work into the wee hours of the morning bottle feeding our precious wombats but as hard as we try these ICU wombats are critical to an injured wombat’s survival when they come in. They give our wombats the hope, the love, the necessary care for survival. So we’re reaching out to you to help us raise the $50,000 needed for completion. We really need this done in the next few weeks as we anticipate a really busy summer period. Can you answer our call? Can you answer the call of a wombat crying out for help? Just $5 from each and every one of you would get us over the line. It’s the cost of your next cup of coffee but one that will help save a life. Our wombats are counting on us. Please donate now: https://cedar-creek-wombat.giveeasy.org/world-wombat-day-20

02.01.2022 Our new Kangaroo Ambassador - legendary fast-bowler Jason Gillespie - was filmed by his son over the weekend talking about the devastating impact the cruel comm...ercial kangaroo industry has on kangaroo families. Join Jason in taking action by emailing your local MP and signing our petition HERE: https://nsw.animaljusticeparty.org/cam/kangaroo-protection/ As Jason says: "The shooting of kangaroos is not only extremely inhumane and cruel - with mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers being gunned down and the joeys bludgeoned to death - but for those who do survive it creates immeasurable stress and grief as their mob, their family, is destroyed." It's time to end the slaughter of kangaroos. Help protect one of our most iconic animals by emailing your local MP or signing the petition here: https://nsw.animaljusticeparty.org/cam/kangaroo-protection/ (and if you don't know your local MP's email - DM us and we will find it for you).
