23.01.2022 What to expect when you come into our Anglesea clinic...... - it’s a small branch clinic and not a big hospital (unlike our main practice at Torquay) - no appointment’s are necessary, just pop down between 8:30-9:30 and take a seat while you wait - we do have a small selection of food, flea and worm treatment, but if there’s something you need, just phone Torquay the day before and we can have it here ready for you the next day - all phone calls go through to the main practic...e at Torquay - we can see all pets at Anglesea for check ups and consultations (it’s only if they require surgery, xrays or a blood test that they may need to go onto the Torquay practice) - See more

16.01.2022 Kennel Cough (canine infectious tracheobronchitis) (canine Cough) (Bordetella bronchiseptica) Across Southern Victoria there has been a wide spread outbreak of the disease!!... WHAT IS IT? It is one of the most contagious respiratory disease of dogs. Causing inflammation of the dogs upper respiratory tract. It can have both a viral and bacterial cause , usually it is combination HOW DO DOGS CATCH IT? It is an airborne transferred disease, and can particles can travel great distances after a dog coughs or sneezes. Coming into contact with a contagious dog or surfaces or even a dog waking by the front yard can result in infection with the disease. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? A dry persistent, forceful, hacking cough - almost as though something is stuck in their throat and are trying to bring it up. Occasionally this cough brings up a white foamy substance. Along with this we sometimes also see lethargy, inappetence, fever, nose and eye discharge. WHAT IS TREATMENT? It varies greatly depending on severity and symptoms involved, but may consist of antibiotics, cough suppressant, something to soothe the irritated throat & possibly lower the fever. Rest is also very important and staying home to limit the spread. BUT MY DOG HAS BEEN VACCINATED? Yes we vaccinate for the main causes, but there are other strains and variants out there that can cause it. DO I NEED TO TAKE MY DOG TO THE VET? Yes it is advised to, we want to make sure that yes it is Kennel Cough as the cause and not something else. We also need to asses what treatment is required for each individual case. If left untreated in some cases this can lead to serious complications, especially for our very young and older patients. On arrival at the Vet you must keep your dog in the car to limit spread while waiting to be seen!! Some animals will be assessed in the car, others may need to enter into the clinic , a thorough clean with antiviral will be undertaken after any possible cases. HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? It varies between a few days for some dogs and up to 2 weeks for others, if it is not clearing after this time a revisit is required. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE.... Humans can NOT catch it. Think of it a little like the human flu- yes we can vaccinate for it but here are other strains out there, yes everyone in the household will probably catch it but everyone will respond differently, some will barely be ill and others will feel terrible. Let’s do our best to limit the spread, please if you think your dog may have it, no walks and staying home (apart from your vet visit) until they have recovered.

However should our patients require further hospitalisation, sedation or surgery, we do send them over to our much larger clinic in Torquay.
