22.01.2022 In the magazine Time dated April 20th, there is an article written by N. T. Wright, professor of New Testament and early Christianity at the University of St.... Andrews. I found it invaluable. The following is a quote from his article. In the Bible, God also laments. The Spirit groans, Jesus weeps. God grieves for his world. It is no part of the Christian vocation to be able to explain whats happening and why. In fact, it is part of the Christian vocation not to be able to explain- and to lament instead. As the Spirit laments within us, so we become small shrines where the presence and healing love of God can dwell. And out of that can emerge new possibilities, new acts of kindness, new scientific understanding and new hope".

21.01.2022 #PrayTogether #StaySafeTogether "Lord Jesus Christ our God, You Who created human beings with utter goodness, the healer of our souls and bodies, heed now t...he supplication of Your children, and save us from the impeding threat against the world. For this affliction has spread ferociously and the fear of death has surrounded us. Many have suffered and many have passed on to repose, and there is none to save us, except You, O Lord...." We continue our weekly series of intercessions for our one human family at this time of crisis adopting the words of sisters and brothers from different parts of the world. Today we invite you to pray with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. To find additional prayers and resources for this time of crisis, please visit: www.oikoumene.org/corona

16.01.2022 A reflection for Advent 2 During this advent season I’m offering a mini series of homilies entitled Gifts for God reflecting on the gifts the magi brought to ...Jesus. Gold, Frankincense and myrrh. On the 4th Sunday of Advent, we will be pondering on the mystery of Mother Mary, because she gave her very self. Her whole being, Body and soul to God. That was her gift. Herself. Today's homily is about frankincense or sweet incense. We use incense in Christian worship for three reasons.First, as the visit of the magi gets closer we remind ourselves that incense was one of the three gifts that the wisemen brought to honour Jesus. In doing so the incense recognises the Christ child's divinity. So what the wise man is saying by offering his gift is I recognise and honour this tiny squawking bundle of humanity as God. Nothing more nothing less. And if it’s good enough for the magi, it is certainly good enough for us as well.So when we honour the altar, a coffin, the gifts and each other at the Eucharist, with incense we are in fact saying that we honour the God that is in you and the things around us.The second reason that incense is used is to remind us of our prayers that ascend to God. Our prayers and those who pray for us and love us. This imagery is beautifully explained in the bible in the book of revelation. The four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. (Revelation 5:6-8).In this passage, we are told that incense is identified with the prayers of the saints. So too with this verse. And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne; and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God.But in case you thought that incense was just a new Testament fad, I have to confess that we pinched this custom from our Jewish brothers and sisters.Check out Exodus 30You shall make an altar to burn incense upon; of acacia wood shall you make it . . . And Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it; every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall burn it, and when Aaron sets up the lamps in the evening, he shall burn it, a perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations. In fact there are 146 references to incense in the bible. So when Jesus went to his local parish synagogue he would have been quite used to and expected to see incense used. He would have grown up with it. The third reason Christians use incense has to do with the use of our physical senses. When we come to the eucharist we use all of our senses. We see the Church. We touch and taste the host, we hear the words and music and when incense is used we smell the incense. And so in a very special way, by using all our senses, we are totally immersed in the act of worship. Every part of us is worshipping God.But there is something else about incense and the potency of the aromas. Smells as we all know bring back memories and affect our emotions.Once I went to visit a house and the thing that really struck me was not the pristine garden, or the lovely drapes or the heated indoor swimming pool. No no no. The thing that I remember most vividly from this visit was the stench of cigarette smoke. Obviously this was a long time ago and thus in quite a different parish from this one.It left me feeling sad somehow and a bit queasy. And it got me thinking that the use of smell is quite important to us. And just as a cigarette smell can bring back the memory of that visit, so too a pleasing perfume or aftershave can bring back all sorts of lovely memories. It does make a difference.I reckon that the magi knew all of this on a conscious or at least subconscious level. They probably burnt incense themselves. Frankincense was a great gift to bring the Christ-child. Heavenly Father, the Magi came on bended knee to adore your Son and offer their gifts. Implant deep within us that same sense of mystery and awe for all your generous gifts to us. So fill our hearts with your love, that we may come one day and see what they saw, the face of your beloved son, even Jesus Christ our Lord Amen See more

15.01.2022 Advent 1 During this advent season I’m offering a mini series entitled Gifts for God reflecting on the gifts the magi brought to Jesus. Gold, Frankincense and... myrrh. On the 4th Sunday of Advent, we will be pondering on the mystery of Mother Mary, not just because it is very close to Christmass, not just because the whole shebang could not have happened without her, but because she also gave a gift to God. Our Lady gave her very self. Her whole being, Body and soul to God. But for today, the first gift that the Magi come and give is the gift of gold. Gold symbolises that this precious bundle of humanity and divinity all wrapped in one and all wrapped up in a blanket, is nothing less than a king. But more than that he is King of all kings as Handel majestically crafted in his stunning work The Messiah. So by offering gold to Jesus the magi might be saying something like this. From one King to another, I recognise and honour your kingship. Further I perceive that you are a far greater king than I will ever be, even though you are so very young and have not made any policy speeches or announced any programs, or spoken a word. You are king not just because of what you have not done, not just because of what you will do. You are THE king simply because of who you are. I place at your feet this gold as an outward gesture of my understanding that you are God. I am honoured and awed to be able to do this. Now there are lots of really nifty things about being a king. You have hot and cold running errand people to carry out your every whim. You never have to worry about where your next meal is coming from and you get to make a lot decisions which will affect peoples lives, hopefully in a very positive and life changing way. Kings also have really cool expensive stuff. They have the best and the best that could be offered was the gift of gold.Gold is a soft metal, but it is also long lasting and expensive. The magi understood its significance and those who dabble precariously, perhaps foolishly in the Stock Market in the 21st century also understand this. They flock to gold in perilous COVID times because they know it is a very safe commodity. Many of us know of someone or are privileged to wear a gold wedding band. It’s gold because our marriage is special and sacred and precious. At a wedding service the golden rings are given and received between husband and wife. There is a symbolism here too, just as there was with the magi and Our Lord.First, the golden wedding band is a symbol of the fidelity between the happy couple. You know how it goes ‘forsaking all others’. So just as the husband and wife pledge themselves to each other, so too the Magi was not just saying that Jesus was any ordinary young King, but the magi was saying that You are my king and there will be no one else as significant in my life as you. You are at the pinnacle of all my priorities, but even deeper and more mysterious than that, just as the bride and groom become one flesh and bound together in an indescribable but profound way, so too the magi as he lays is gift at the feet of the Christ child, is saying by this outward action, that you Lord Jesus and I are one. It really is what Christmass is all about; God and man becoming one flesh.Second thing about the symbolism of Gold. Gold lasts for a really long time. The wedding ring goes round and round in an endless circle with no beginning or ending, so the vocation of the couple is that their love for each other will also go on and on. It might change, it might develop, it might mysteriously mature and evolve into something that it was not at the beginning. I would like to think that the Magi’s desire for an unending relationship with the Lord was his deepest yearning. Finally, what pervades all of this, is a most marvellous sense of joy. The couples joy for each other. The marvellous joy for the Christ-child, the Lord’s joy for all those who make pilgrimage to Him. You don’t give gold to someone who you are hostile towards. You give gold to someone who makes you happy. Something to think about the next time you see a golden ring on someone's hand, or maybe even your own. A little prayer for the season.Heavenly Father, the Magi came on bended knee to adore your Son and offer their gifts. Implant deep within us that same sense of mystery and awe for all your generous gifts to us. So fill our hearts with your love, that we may come one day and see what they saw, the face of your beloved son, even Jesus Christ our Lord Amen See more

13.01.2022 Oops - missed page 1 of the update! Here it is.

13.01.2022 On Sunday 8 November, the parish welcomed Bishop Peter Stuart to St Paul's Kurri Kurri to confirm several candidates. Regrettably Mthr Theresa, who had prepared the candidates, succumbed to food poisoning overnight, and was unable to participate. The liturgy was made more meaningful by musical contributions from the parish singers, soloist Deirdre Blackmore and the Barrett family.

13.01.2022 #ThyKingdomCome begins today! Join the global wave of prayer from Ascension to Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus. Praying for others to know Jesus... is one of the most powerful things we can do. Persistent prayer for others brings transformation to their lives. Choose five people you would regularly like to pray for and write their names down onto a list. If youre not sure who to pray for, ask God to guide you as you choose. Once you have settled on 5 names, commit to praying for them regularly by praying the following: Loving Father, in the face of Jesus Christ your light and glory have blazed forth. Send your Holy Spirit that I may share with my friends [here, name your friends] the life of your Son and your love for all. Strengthen me as a witness to that love as I pledge to pray for them, for your names sake. Amen. See more

13.01.2022 These two texts have been embraced by the Primates of the Anglican Communion as prayers for unity that may be used all around the Communion, as local circumstan...ces permit. They may be found useful in Australia in this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. A prayer for unity 1 God of peace, you are the bridge-builder, you are the opener of doors. In Christ you break down dividing walls and invite us to belong together. You give more than enough love for binding up broken hearts, mending broken relationships, knitting together our scraps of faith into one communion and fellowship. Teach us, we pray, to see the face of Christ not only in our friends, but also in the faces of strangers and enemies. Rebuke us, we pray, when we choose separation instead of connection, isolation instead of collaboration. Renew us, we pray, for a generous sharing in abundant life with you and with one another, now and for ever. Amen. A prayer for unity 2 Come, Holy Spirit! Breathe your peace on us, and on the whole Church of God. Give us grace to be worthy of our calling. May we bear true witness to one Lord, Jesus Christ, one faith in his death and resurrection, one baptism that has made us members of his body, one God and father of all. Banish from our hearts all bitterness and envy, all anxiety and fear. Pour out afresh today your astonishing variety of gifts, so that the body may build itself up in love. Teach us to recognise the grace of Christ in one another, and to bring our own treasures with humility, for the service of others. Come, Holy Spirit!

08.01.2022 While visiting the parish for confirmation, Bishop Peter blessed new vestments which are to be used for worship at Christ Church Mt Vincent. Three chasubles, in the liturgical colours of green purple and red have been created, with orphreys designed by Christ Church parishioner Dr Susan Ryman and tailoring by Sharon Dyson-Smith. The original artworks now hang in the porch at Christ Church Mt Vincent. Susan explains the detail of the project thus: "It was a small part of a mu...lti-faceted plan designed to equally grow St Pauls at Kurri Kurri, St Mary’s at Weston and Christchurch at Mount Vincent in close consultation with its community. By embracing the various skills and talents of parishioners, the targeted objectives, both realistic and strategic, were identified and met. This is a continual process as new targets are identified, set and met in response to our changing world. The artwork in these site-specific panels visually connect the history, the building itself and its extraordinary and uniquely beautiful surrounds. All three panels are based on the design of the stained glass windows along the sides and at the entrance to the Church. Incorporated within these compositions are elements of the surrounding landscape. Flora and fauna such as Mount Vincent Mint (Prosanthera Stricta vulnerable species 01/12/2016), Paperbark (Eucalyptus Viminalis), tree frogs, ibis, the lyre bird and warblers to name a few. At the top of each panel is the western profile of Mount Vincent, which the orientation of the Church faces." See more

07.01.2022 Day 9 reflection and prayer for #ThyKingdomCome

07.01.2022 As the global wave of prayer from Ascension to Pentecost draws to a close, we offer the final reflection and prayers for #ThyKingdomCome

05.01.2022 Reflection for Day 5 of #ThyKingdomCome

04.01.2022 A reflection for Pentecost May 31st Its the evening of the first Easter Sunday and the Master appears to the apostles. He gives them an appetiser of Pentecost,... then sends them out to carry on the unending mission. Now a couple of weeks ago, I pointed out that the intimacy and relationship that Jesus has with his Father, is the same intimacy and relationship that we are called to have with Jesus and with each other. Today, the same principle applies, only we take the plan one step further. Listen carefully 21 Jesus said, As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you. 22 So just as the Father sent Jesus on a mission to bring healing, wholeness and reconciliation to the world, so to Jesus sends us on that very same mission of healing, wholeness and reconciliation. Uh huh Just as the Father sent Jesus on a mission to bring healing, wholeness and reconciliation, so to Jesus sends us on that very same mission of healing, wholeness and reconciliation. Now this is a marvellous adventure that we are called to embark on. It is thrilling and exciting, but it is also perilous and we need a lot of help. The help is given to us by the same Holy Spirit the breath of God. Where do we tap into this spirit? There are all the traditional places - the sacraments. a) Through Baptism The Holy Spirit washes away sin and makes us children of God and heirs of Heaven. b) Through Confirmation, He makes us temples of God, warriors and defenders of the Faith. And to this day the service of confirmation goes. Strengthen Lord your servant Mildred with your Holy Spirit Through the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual nourishment by converting bread and wine into Jesus Body and Blood. In fact there is a part in the Eucharist, just after the Holy Holy Holy, part where the priest asks for the gift of the Holy Spirit to come down and change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus. The flash church word for this part of the service is epiclesis and this morning the words are Lord you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ At the ordination of a priest there is a part in the service where the bishop says to the candidate. Receive the office and work of a priest and then continues with the very same words that Our Lord said to the apostles. Who so ever sins you forgive they are forgiven and who so ever sins you retain they are retained. Now these are just some of the places that we know with absolute certainty that the Holy Spirit is accessible and in top gear. But we are also aware that much of the Holy Sprits work happens out side of these traditional channels of grace. The church has never and should never, claim to have a complete monopoly of the Holy Spirit. In Johns gospel Jesus is having a fireside chat with Nicodemus and explains The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. Some of the more high profile movements where I think Holy Sprit has been at work outside the sacraments and active within our society are with things like Our heightened sense of vocation to care for Gods creation. Calling out the absolute wrongness of domestic violence and the Me too movement. But how do we know? How can we be sure this is the work of the Holy Spirit? It is by their fruits that we know if Gods Spirit is work. And the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. So whenever you see a movement, a person, an action, or you hear a word bringing these things to life, then you can be very sure that the Holy Spirit is at work. Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. On our mission, the same mission that Jesus went on, these things are our tools of trade and they are also the fruit that we called to nurture, to blossom and flourish, in the lives that we are privileged to touch. And on this day of resurrection, just as He did on that very first day of resurrection, The Master breathes on us. He sends us out as He himself was sent out. With all its joy, with alls its scrapes, with all its disappointments, with all its delight, with all its adventure and with all its love, this is His work, this is the Spirits work, this is our work yours and mine.
