25.01.2022 Earlier this year (before COVID-19 travel restrictions), we visited our program in the Solomon Islands and spoke with women who had felt empowered through our Safe, Strong Communities project. Read the story to find out how our partner Anglican Church of Melanesia is challenging long-held gender roles and beliefs from a biblical standpoint - and how this is helping women to "stand on their own feet and be equal." www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/bridging-the-gender-gap-in-/... #AustralianAid #ANCP See more

24.01.2022 Covid-19’s economic toll in the developing world: a survey of countries, including Kenya, shows the pandemic is pushing families across the developing world into poverty and hunger. www.vox.com//22/covid-19-poverty-hunger-developing-nations

22.01.2022 We are encouraged to see in last night’s Federal Budget the first budgeted overseas aid increase under the Coalition Government since their election to office in 2013, and that aid to the Pacific in particular has increased. Our CEO, Rev’d Dr Bob Mitchell, said, We are particularly glad that an extra $211 million has been allocated for our Pacific neighbours to respond to the challenges of COVID-19. Australia has a particular responsibility to respond to this extraordinary ...challenge in our region and we commend the Australian Government for recognising this. Aid for our Pacific neighbours is vital for their flourishing. We are excited to continue to work with our partners towards this goal. #AustralianAid

22.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE: Work continues in Mozambique and Kenya to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and helping those most impacted. 22.01.2022 Rising seas and high tides - these things are not only impacting coasts in the Pacific, but they are threatening food security and people's livelihoods too. Tagolyn Kabekabe is the Pacific Coordinator with the Anglican Alliance, of which we are a member. Here she discusses the impact of climate change, which is affecting families in unexpected and complex ways. www.mmuk.net//climate-change-unforeseen-effects-on-diet-a/

22.01.2022 Work continues in Gaza to help improve the lives of women with breast cancer: last month socially distanced meetings like these were held with community based organisations to build an outreach strategy. Working with these organisations is key in awareness raising so that women aren't discriminated against, and men understand and are equipped to support women fighting this disease. Despite COVID-19 this work continues!... #AustralianAid #ANCP See more

22.01.2022 Some lovely pictures from the Spafford Children's Center - for months the children weren't allowed to leave their homes but now they are painting masterpieces!

21.01.2022 Our Spring Appeal is on its way! Our appeal's theme this year is 'Being Prepared'. Being prepared seems to be more difficult these days, but when there are vulnerable people who need our assistance, we want to be ready to help. That is why we have our Rapid Response Emergency Fund, so that when an emergency strikes, we are ready to respond quickly. Just like we were able to respond quickly when Tropical Cyclone Harold hit Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands in April, at a time wh...en they were already trying to prepare for COVID-19. Our Rapid Response Emergency Fund exists so that we can offer help quickly - please help us replenish this Fund so we can offer help to the most vulnerable in their time of need. To read more about how this works or to donate: www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/give/2020-spring-appeal/

19.01.2022 Today is Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent, marking a solemn and reflective time in our Christian calendar leading up to Easter. This year we have put together our Lenten Reflection meditating on the 'Colours of Lent', starting week 1 at grey, the colour of ashes. "For most people, grey is a gloomy colour redolent of melancholy and mourning. It reminds us of the storm clouds that gather. ... But grey is also the wisdom of experience, a crown of splendour (Proverbs 16:31). And that wisdom surely knows that the clouds will pass." To download your copy of our 'Colours of Lent' weekly reflection, head to our website: www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/2021-lenten-reflection/

19.01.2022 October is Sexual Violence Awareness Month and yesterday, October 11, was International Day of the Girl Child. A key area of our work is working with local churches overseas to help create a safe environment for girls and women so that they can live, participate and flourish in their communities. See the article by our very own Belinda Lauria in the Anglican Media Melbourne (page 7), as she gives her account of working with our partner in the Solomon Islands as it works towar...ds the creation of a "Safe Church" for all. http://tma.melbourneanglican.org.au/this-months-tma See more

18.01.2022 Today I’m showing my support for the End COVID For All campaign. As the CEO of Anglican Overseas Aid, I believe that we need to come together and show our solidarity with our global neighbours in the fight against COVID-19. It’s up to us as individuals, as well as our Australian Government to support those most vulnerable to the disease including millions of people living in the world's poorest communities. This doesn’t end for anyone, until it ends for everyone. #EndCOVIDF...orAll - Revd Dr Bob Mitchell AM

17.01.2022 Our program in Mozambique has, for a long time, had a focus on public health, working to improve health knowledge and access for remote and rural communities. At the moment, our partner Diocese Missionária de Nampula, is fighting COVID-19, however, before March, their focus was preventing other communicable diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria, while also increasing nutrition for families. A recent evaluation of the past few years of the work has shown its value as well as its ...positive impact on people's lives. We are happy to partner with Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to run this program. Visit www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/towards-abundant-life-progr/ to read the evaluation. #AustralianAid #ANCP

16.01.2022 In addition to prayer resources shared yesterday, the Cry for Hope website is also a good resource for further action, should you wish to go deeper on the issue of conflict in the Holy Land. As always, we pray for peace and safety for our partners and people living in areas of conflict. Please join us in prayer, particularly this week. www.cryforhope.org

15.01.2022 This Spring Appeal we have chosen to focus on 'Being Prepared' - prepared to save and protect lives when people are at their most vulnerable. We do this through our Rapid Response Emergency Fund, our way of being prepared to help when most needed. In times of crisis, the most vulnerable become even more so, particularly women, children and people with disabilities. After Tropical Cyclone Harold hit Vanuatu, our partner, Anglican Church of Melanesia was able to help many in h...ard hit communities with psychosocial support - including pastoral care and service referral for protection. Our Rapid Response Emergency Fund is designed to help in situations like this - so that people can access the help they need in times of distress. 15.01.2022 Our partner, Ahli Arab Hospital, offers many essential services to the people of Gaza, including breast screening services, and works closely with community-based organisations to help build awareness of breast cancer. After a brief closure in March due to COVID-19, they were able to open up again with measures in place to ensure everyone's safety. Read more about how the Ahli Arab Hospital has been continuing to provide these essential services during this time and the chang...es that are happening: www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/essential-womens-health-ser/ #AustralianAid Our work with ‘Women’s Health and Wellbeing’ program in Gaza is supported by the Australian Government and donations from the Australian public through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program #ANCP.

15.01.2022 Kylie, our International Programs Manager, was honoured to participate in this discussion alongside Mario from Diocese Missionária de Nampula, our Mozambican partner. The group spoke about the importance of having a gender-sensitive approach in our work, the challenges facing women and girls in the COVID-19 era, and how we are facing those challenges together!

14.01.2022 At the moment, lockdown measures are preventing children from returning to school in Kenya. Unfortunately, along with the shutdown of schools, risks to children increase. Before the COVID-19 lockdown, we spoke with teachers who had been trained in child counselling through our partner, Anglican Church of Kenya, Mount Kenya West Diocese (ACK), about their role in keeping children in rural communities safe. Read this story here: www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/teachers-a-vital-s...afeguard-/ During COVID-19, ACK has continued to help communities prioritise child protection - read more about this on our COVID-19 information page on our website. #AustralianAid #ANCP

14.01.2022 This week is World Week for Peace in Palestine and Israel. Again, there has been a recent resurgence of violence in Gaza, where we work with our partner, the Ahli Arab Hospital. The toll of living in such a volatile area is heavy, and our prayers are always with the hospital and those in affected areas. To help guide your prayer, The World Council of Churches has put together some information and a prayer guide that you can follow this week as we all reflect on the hope for... peace in the Holy Land. https://www.oikoumene.org//creative-solidarity-in-common-f

13.01.2022 In Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, most people grow what they eat in small food gardens. After Tropical Cyclone Harold caused devastating floods, many of these gardens were washed away. Some communities were left with little to eat. To help those most impacted, AOA led the Church Agencies Network Disaster Operations response, delivering food and supplies. Follow the link to read what was done and why this is so important.... https://anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/swept-away-the-burden-o/ See more

12.01.2022 Being prepared is to be like a wise man who builds his house on rock, according to Jesus in Matthew's gospel . That way when the storms come, the house remains standing. For us, the Rapid Response Emergency Fund is our 'house on rock.' It enables us to act quickly, being thoroughly prepared to show Christ's compassion when the storms come - whether that be COVID-19, a drought, a cyclone or any other disaster. Please, in this time of uncertainty, contribute to our ‘house on r...ock’, so that we can continue to help when the most vulnerable suffer devastating blows. www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/give/2020-spring-appeal/ See more

12.01.2022 In times of disaster, whole communities are impacted, however some people are more at risk than others. Among those at risk are people living with disabilities. After TC Harold hit Vanuatu earlier this year, our partner Anglican Church of Melanesia, sent their response team to support the most vulnerable. Keep reading to find out why this is important and how they supported hard hit communities:... www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/reaching-those-with-a-disab/ #AHPTCHarold #AustralianAid See more

11.01.2022 There could be a "lost generation" of children as the pandemic closes schools, with many students likely not to return. "The longer schools are closed, the greater the risk that millions of children in developing countries will experience a lifetime of poorer learning and lower future earnings. The most marginalised may never return to school."

07.01.2022 Thank you! To the Australian government and the Australian people for supporting our global neighbours in the fight against COVID-19.

07.01.2022 We all like to have our say - about our lives, our families and the way our communities are run. This is particularly important when things aren't working properly, or there has been an injustice. In Vanuatu, we have been working closely with our partner, the Anglican Church of Melanesia, so that people, especially the most vulnerable in times of crisis, have a way of speaking up. Keep reading to find out how! #AustralianAid #DisasterREADY ... https://anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/speaking-up-empowering-/

07.01.2022 Below is a story shared by the Spafford Children's Center. Through your continued support, more children like Amir suffering trauma from living in a conflict zone are able to receive help dealing with their fears and emotions! Amir is nine years old and painfully timid and nervous. Three years ago, Israeli security forces raided his home in the middle of the night and arrested his brother. This incident caused chronic sleep disruption, and he became afraid of people, includin...g the police, and others at school and in his community. His parents tried everything to help, but the reactions continued. Eventually they found the Spafford Children’s Center, where he was assessed by psychologist, Dr. Nader. He recommended that Amir spend time with the activities therapist, Yazan. Through participating in activities, Amir started to relax and feel safe so that he finally felt comfortable talking about his experiences. Slowly, he is interacting with Yazan and his peers. He has a long way to go, but now he is in a safe place with caring people who know how to help him.

01.01.2022 Three decades of change in South Africa! On June 30 last year, our partnership in South Africa with the Department of Social Responsibility, Diocese of Grahamstown, came to a close. While it's sad to say goodbye, it's also a time to celebrate the communities that are now able to drive their own change.
