14.01.2022 A lot of questions have been raised by not only families/carers of children or adults with a disability, but also service providers and community based Mental Health Service providers in regards to NDIS. SO......do Carers have a say in what support they provide? Yes, carers do have a say in what support they will provide to an NDIS participant and the NDIA must take this into consideration. There are a range of NDIS Rules which specify how the NDIS should operate. Some of t...hese Rules include instructions for NDIA staff that relate to carers. For example, the Rules which cover ‘Supports for Participants’ state that when the NDIA makes decisions about what supports they will fund for a person with a disability, they MUST ensure that this support is sustainable. This means they need to consider what is reasonable to expect families and carers to provide and what the NDIA can do to ensure that this support can be provided on an ongoing basis. In making this judgement the NDIA has to take the following issues into account: The age and capacity (or ability) of their carer, and whether they can keep caring in the same way. The amount of care they provide, the type of this support and whether it is reasonable for the carer to do these tasks. Any risks to the wellbeing of any family members or carers in carrying out their caring role. For example, the NDIA does not expect a child to care for their parents or siblings or to miss out on going to school because of their caring role. Any supports the carer might need to help them in their caring role.

08.01.2022 Did you know that people with mental illness are among the most socially and medically marginalized people in our community. Ironically, these same people are frequently monitored and treated by qualified health professionals for their mental health problems, whilst their physical health issues are either ignored or inadequately treated. On June 1st, 2016 the National Mental Health Carer and Consumer Forum released an Advocacy Brief which provides further information here: https://nmhccf.org.au//physical-health-impacts-mental-illn

06.01.2022 What a great start to NAIDOC 2016 with an invitation to attend Hollingsworth Elders Care Centre for a feasting, with amazing performances with both Aboriginal (missed that performance) & Torres Strait Islander dancers. It was a privilege to see so much diversity in one place and a big thanks to Management and Staff of Blue Care's Indigenous Services for opening their doors to families and providers once again.

05.01.2022 With a Federal Election on Saturday 2nd July 2016, most of the population may have no qualms about casting their votes. But for some, this responsibility may cause anxieties or become overwhelming because there's so much information out there; placards on the street, media advertisements and hype, waiting in queues at designated voting venues, parking & access & logistics (mobility, disability, vision impaired); being bombarded with flyers and bits of information....the list... goes on & on. As Australian citizens, we'd hope that our votes DO make a difference to our society - but what about those in our communities that have difficulties in reading & writing or whom have challenges such as a lack of understanding the bureaucracy and/or voting processes. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has a portal available to community which assist those in our communities to gain improved understanding about the foundation, principles and processes of voting. Check out and share the link: http://www.aec.gov.au/community/
