25.01.2022 The variation that exists within the Angus breed enables breeders to continue to make gains in areas significant to their breeding program and that of their clients. A recent project undertaken by Angus Australia once again examined how much variation exists in Angus, by looking at the performance of the progeny by sires in the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program. 25.01.2022 The variation in trait performance: By looking at the variation between the average performance of the top 5 sire progeny groups and the 5 lowest performing progeny groups for each of the traits, the project revealed that there is a significant amount of genetic variation between animals within the Angus population. This variation presents a lot of opportunity to improve the productivity of Angus beef enterprises by utilising better genetics. Check out the Lessons from the ASBP resources, available on the Angus Australia website for further information on the variation seen between the progeny groups and the results from the earlier work examining cohorts 1, 2 and 3 https://buff.ly/32YlG71 Meat & Livestock Australia

22.01.2022 EBVs are a powerful tool to support breeders when making breeding and selection decisions. It is however important when utilising EBVs that we understand the tool and what information it provides, to assist with decision making. Learn more here
21.01.2022 Angus Australia members are reminded that additional DNA requirements apply when registering calves when the sire and/or dam is born after 1/1/2018. For further information please read more https://buff.ly/337uB5a
21.01.2022 For intramuscular fat (IMF), Lessons from the ASBP project (undertaken by Angus Australia, with funding assistance from the Meat & Livestock Australia Donor Company) found the difference between the average IMF EBV of the highest and lowest 10 IMF EBV sires in each cohort was on average 2.6%, across cohorts 5, 6 and 7. This equates to an expected difference in the average IMF of progeny between sire groups of 1.3%. The predicted difference is only half the difference in the EBVs, as the sires only contribute to half of their progeny’s genetics. Check out the Lessons from the ASBP resources, available on the Angus Australia website for the other carcase traits and the results from the earlier work examining cohorts 1, 2 and 3 https://buff.ly/34WTkv7

19.01.2022 If the sire of an animal being registered is born after 1/1/2018, and the animal being registered was bred by artificial insemination (AI) or embryo transfer (ET), the sire must be tested with either Angus GS or HD50K for Angus, plus the 9 genetic conditions monitored by Angus Australia. 16.01.2022 Long time Angus Youth participants and supporters, Kate and Justin Boshammer sadly recently lost their daughter Zara and to honour her memory they will be hosting Zara’s Day. A beautiful afternoon of fundraising in Zara’s memory, to make a positive difference in the lives of others. The fundraising efforts will be supporting the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as Zara had two flights with them, as well as the Steve Waugh Foundation, which helps children and young adults with rar...e disease, something that is close to their hearts with Zara. For more information please visit the event page Zara's Day or Elite Livestock Auctions https://elitelivestockauctions.com.au/bid-now/
16.01.2022 Members are advised of two important changes that will apply to the identification of animals that are born from January 1st, 2021 onwards, being the requirement for NLIS to be used as one of the permanent forms of identification, and a change to the format of animal IDs. Read more here

10.01.2022 Performance recording is an important component of your breeding enterprise, as it is a critical step in order to improve any trait. Furthermore, it’s very important for variation and contemporary group information to be included for the calculation of EBVs. In response to this Angus Australia has compiled a series of informative resources that assist our members in firstly, collecting these important traits, but also additionally provides some literature regarding common performance recording problems and how to utilise management groups on farm. 10.01.2022 EBVs move, but by how much? The Lessons from the ASBP project has shown clearly that while the EBVs for some individual sires did change, as expected, there was, on average, minimal change in the EBVs of sires in cohorts 5, 6 & 7 of the ASBP, and the initial EBVs of the sires, despite being of low accuracy, described the relative genetic merit of the sires well. Check out the Lessons from the ASBP resources, available on the Angus Australia website for further information on the variation seen between the progeny groups and the results from the earlier work examining cohorts 1, 2 and 3. 07.01.2022 When it comes to performance recording, do you ensure you collect structural scores? If not, when it comes to your herd, how important is structural soundness to you? Angus Australia has found that some of the most important traits for producers are not recorded on farm. For supply materials to assist you in collecting structural scores and much more, please visit the Angus Education Centre
07.01.2022 Over a number of weeks, Angus Australia has been providing support resources regarding the collection of performance and it's importance as s a critical step in improving any trait, because if you don’t record it you can’t improve it. For further information and resources read more here
06.01.2022 The underlying principle of managements groups is that only animals that have equal opportunity to perform are directly compared together. It is only when animals can be directly compared on an even playing field that we can accurately account for non-genetic factors and calculate the genetic merit of the animal. Read more about management groups here https://buff.ly/3iDdZZh Or visit the Education Centre to learn more about recording management groups here https://buff.ly/2DXNU8r
