25.01.2022 The Australian National Imams Council appeared today before the Joint Parliamentary Inquiry relating to the NSW Anti-Discrimination Amendment (Religious Freedoms and Equality) Bill 2020. Bilal Rauf appeared on behalf of ANIC and the 43 organisations that undersigned the submission linked below: http://anic.org.au/submissionnsw2020... NSW does not have any legislative protection against discrimination on the ground of religion. Against this backdrop, Bilal highlighted the importance of having legislative protection and ensuring that minority faith communities had a level of protection equal to that provided to other protected attributes, such as race and gender. Moreover, in the face of increasing right wing white supremacist sentiment and rhetoric and instances of discrimination, this glaring deficiency could not continue unaddressed. It stood as a blight on a multicultural and multi- religious State such as NSW. The Australian Muslim Women’s Association and Australian Federation of Islamic Councils also appeared at the session today.

24.01.2022 The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) today visited Gallipoli Mosque and other respectful members of the Alliance of Australian Muslims (AAM) as a display of unity and solidarity against the recent vile vandalism attack on the Mosque. It is extremely unacceptable in country for any individual or group, to attack or cause damage to any public place of worship or religious centre, whether physical or verbal. There is just no place for this. The Australian government mu...st do more to prevent acts of hate on places of worship. Such acts threaten the very fabric of our society and country, impacting the harmony and coexistence models in place. Places of worship are lifeline, a comfortable space and a spiritual home for many, and such attacks put these core values at risk. The Australian Muslim community unanimously condemns any attack on any mosque or public place of worship and calls for the utmost respect and value towards such places.

It seems unfair that Muslims and other faith groups are subjected to measures that wouldn’t otherwise be mandatory if in a different setting. We are working with other faith groups to ease restrictions on religous services In Sha’ Allah.

In principle, The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) is in support of the production of a legally approved, ethical, appropriately tested vaccine and Islamicly permissible that will prevent the spread of the virus. Islam promotes the importance of preserving life and humanity in general and the progression of science and medicine. As for the Islamic position on a specific vaccine for coronavirus and the recent debate on whether or not it should be accepted as a preventative treatment is a matter to be researched and explored by the Australian Fatwa Council in consultation with the experts once the vaccine is tested, approved and legalised for human use in Australia once relevant specific immunological medical information emerges. 05.01.2022 Hate Crimes New law under the Crimes Act 1900, section 93Z In 2018, the NSW Government introduced a new law under the Crimes Act 1900, section 93Z Offence of publicly threatening or inciting violence on grounds of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex or HIV/AIDS status... Link for more details: https://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/ The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) has been actively advocating for laws that seek to protect Australian Muslims against crimes or vilification on the grounds of religion. On Tuesday 8 Sept 2020, the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) hosted an information session (via zoom), delivered by Legal Aid NSW aimed at raising awareness to Imams and community organisations in relation to s 93Z Crimes Act NSW, a law aimed at protecting minority groups from hate speech and violence. It was a very beneficial session- providing the attendees with important information about the scope of the law, how and where to report incidents and its general application. ANICs next step is to host another information session aimed at Muslim Professionals in NSW, followed by one aimed at the broader Muslim community in NSW. Be sure to watch this space.
