20.01.2022 Blood Donors Wanted Just like in human medicine, blood can be life saving for other pets in need. Busta is a perfect example of one of our regular donor dogs! He is such a good boy and always sits patiently while his blood is collected. We are always looking for both dog and cat blood donors. However, there are some key requirements that these life saving animals must meet. Dogs must:... Weigh more than 25 kg Be between 1 - 8 years old Be up to date on all vaccinations and heartworm treatment Have no serious illnesses or long term medications Have a calm nature Cats must: Be of larger build (minimum 4.5kg) Be up to date on preventative medications Have a calm temperament (ideal but not essential) Be less than 10 years old Your pet will receive a free blood screen before each donation, complimentary blood typing (handy in the future if they require a transfusion themselves), intravenous fluid therapy for a period after donation and a clinic credit. If you think your pet would make a great donor, please send us a message or call us on: (02) 4283 8432.

19.01.2022 PARALYSIS TICKS - HIGH ALERT! This year we have been seeing some paralysis tick patients at our ARH hospitals very early in the season. Clinical signs can vary but may include vomiting, lethargy, wobbly walking, laboured breathing, grunting, not eating, diarrhoea, loss of voice, & seeming off colour. ... Please share or tag your friends to spread the word. Make sure your pet is up to date on tick prevention, especially as the weather starts warming up. If you are concerned that your pet has a tick seek urgent veterinary advice! 4283 8432 3 Princes Highway Fairy Meadow

18.01.2022 Cat-fishing?! 'Patronus' presented to ARH after getting a fish-hook stuck in the side of her face. Dr Tom administered a sedative medication and strong pain killers to allow for the safe removal of the fish hook. She was very lucky that her eye was not damaged and is being monitored closely during her recovery. If your pet is in a similar predicament, it is best to see a Veterinarian for safe removal. 02) 4283 8432

15.01.2022 Respiratory Distress In Birds Rikki is a 12 year old cockatiel who presented to ARH struggling to breathe. Dr Alex suspected that she may have inhaled smoke or Teflon poisoning. Rikki's pet-parents acted quickly in this situation which contributed to her quick recovery. Birds are very susceptible to inhaled chemicals and fumes. Whenever you cook with non-stick cookware (or if you accidentally burn dinner) it is recommended to open windows and not have your birds in any rooms... near the kitchen while you cook. Thankfully Rikkie responded well to antibiotics and oxygen therapy in our speciality Avian oxygen incubators. If your bird is struggling to breathe then it is an emergency and you should seek immediate veterinary attention. 02) 4283 8432 See more

14.01.2022 Spring is here . And that means the bees are too! Little Trevor went on a walk and then suddenly his face started to swell. When he arrived at ARH he was given an anti-histamine injection. Allergic reactions can cause life threatening airway swelling so it is always best to go straight to your closest vet if you notice your pet is having an allergic reaction. Little Trevor was discharged back into the care of his family and is expected to make a full recovery! (02) 4283 8432

07.01.2022 Paralysis ticks are out in force in the Illawarra area! We have already had more than 7 animals in the last week with paralysis ticks! Make sure your pet has been treated with a tick prevention such as: Bravecto spot-on (6 months protection), Bravecto Chews (3 months protection), Nexgard (monthly) or Seresto collars (4 months). Signs of tick paralysis: Changes in voice/bark, vomiting, wobblyness, inability to stand, breathing difficulties and lethargy. Talk to your vet about what tick prevention is most suitable for your needs. If you find a tick, it is best to have a vet clinic remove the tick safely to ensure the head is not left behind. 02) 4283 8432
