25.01.2022 Project Summer Lifeline, People for Animals Trust- Faridabad" Run By:- Ravi Dubey, have sent us photos from their work during July. Many different types of animals benefit from the provision of fresh, clean drinking water in strategic locations. With summer being in full swing, this is an important service for the stray and working animals in the area. #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals
25.01.2022 People from the village of Puthukkudiyiruppu in Sri Lanka were notorious for their hatred of donkeys but due to exposure to the Mannar Donkey Centre and Bridging Lanka activities, these firmly held views are being dislodged. This past month some of the villages contacted the centre about an injured donkey with gaping, maggot-infested wounds to its neck and stomach. The poor animal also had one of its hoofs severed. The team quickly took the donkey to the centre to be treated. The hoof will take several months to grow back but the team are hoping for a much quicker recovery of the other wounds. It is fantastic to reflect upon how much this one village has changed in its regard for donkeys, and the transformation from a very negative view to a kind and positive one. #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals
24.01.2022 Partner group LAZAWO in Tanzania has sent us their September update: "LAZAWO attended 217 donkeys in Butiama district for different welfare and health issues for which all these donkeys were examined, dewormed and treated for various conditions. 107 donkeys had wounds caused by tethering and beating,13 donkeys with lameness due to tendon exhaustion, 37 donkeys with pneumonia as they were coughing, 4 donkeys with eye infection and 12 cases of impaction colic. We dewormed all 2...17 donkeys that we attended during September. Aside from the mobile vet clinic we did, we had a window of opportunity to talk and educate 98 donkey owners in the three wards of Buswahil, Bisumwa and Mirwa (a total of 7 villages were covered). The training sessions were conducted during the 4 clinics done and at home visiting after call. We educated the donkey owners on the basics of donkey care and welfare needs. A well construction underway, to be completed in a couple of days, is located in Mirwa village where clean water is a luxury. A well will help both animals and people to access clean and safe water. LAZAWO would like to extend it sincerely thanks to Animal Aid Abroad for sponsorship of mobile and outreach in Butiama." www.animalaidabroad.org #Animalaidabroad #Workinganimals #Animalcharity
24.01.2022 AAA Partner group Tikobane Trust have sent us an update on their July activities: "As the COVID 19 cases continue to raise in Zimbabwe and most people desperate to make a living, donkeys are becoming an easy target as thieves are stealing and selling them to the Chinese people, some donkey owners sell their donkeys willing to the Chinese national. We have attended to a number of stolen donkeys and rescued some who were destined to be sold .Donkeys that are mostly sold are sic...k or old a good reason we believed people who are buying them are into their skins as opposed to meat as they claim. With many people out of work because of COVID 19 people have resorted to firewood trading to make a living, donkeys are made to work even more and with less food to eat with summer approaching there is less food for donkeys to graze, however with our feed stations (Crops remains) in our villages we will continue to feed working animals found working during the day. These animals work the whole day without time to graze, feed stations provide much need feed for working donkeys so as to discourage the owners from making them graze at night were they will be easily attacked by predators. Donkeys are easy target to lions and hyenas and we educate owners to keep them enclosed at night all the times. Improper harnessing is still a challenge with many donkey owners accustomed to using more than two donkey. We continue treating harness wounds and educating communities on proper harness and the need to keep our donkeys in good health." Thank you Tikobane Trust for your amazing work! #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals

23.01.2022 AAA partner group in India, Friendicoes have saved a retired horse and brought her to lifetime care at the Gurgaon Sanctuary. This mare was retired from the army polo club and her name is Battle Cry. She is blind in the right eye and suffers from arthritis. As such, she is unfit for work. Retired horses sold at auction can meet with unpleasant ends, so the owner, while sad to farewell the horse, was happy that she was going to a good home where she can live out her days in peace and comfort. #Animalaidabroad #Animalcharity #Workinganimals
23.01.2022 Animal Nepal have sent us their report on September activities: "This month we welcomed our new caretakers Bhan Bahadur Budha and Ranga Devi Budha. They have settled in well and are getting to know our sanctuary residents. Recently, we have noticed that Lava and Kush our miniature donkey brothers are starting to become very friendly with people. Usually they would keep their distance, especially Lava, but these days they tend to follow us around. It’s very endearing to see th...is and seems like they are becoming mellow and fonder of people as they grow older. Our sanctuary is still closed to the public but we visit regularly, especially our technical team to make sure all our animals are healthy and well groomed. In previous years, we would have had groups of final year veterinary students coming into the sanctuary to learn about equine management. Our animals loved the extra attention they received but this year, we have decided against bringing in interns, so the sanctuary is certainly a lot quieter. Following the monsoon season, there is a lot of greenery at our sanctuary at this time, with plenty of green fodder grass to graze on. As much as they love their grains, their favorite is green grass and they tend to huddle around the green areas in their little groups and graze all day long. Our two newest residents Jackie the mule and Paulie the horse are still kept separate from the rest of the animals. Due to their disability Jackie is lame and Paulie has a missing eye they prefer to stay away from the others and enjoy each other’s company. Paulie is especially suspicious around people and other animals and doesn’t like anyone to be on her blind side and tends to get quite nervous about it. We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad for their continued financial support in the running and maintenance of the sanctuary for our rescued equines in Dukuchhap." www.animalaidabroad.org #animalaidabroad #animalcharity # workinganimals
23.01.2022 September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, and AAA want to highlight the pain felt specifically by working animals around the world. Hello, I am a horse in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I dont have a name. Every day my owner puts me to work, pulling a carriage for tourists to ride in as they visit the sights of the city. This is heavy, hard work and I was rarely given any breaks for water. This work started to get harder when my stomach started to expand and I realized I was going... to have a baby. My owner ignored that I was pregnant and continued to make me work every day, despite the pain I was feeling and the fear of his punishment if I did not. This continued until one day the pain was unbearable. I needed to lie down as I realized that the foal was coming. I couldnt lie down though because I was still harnessed to the carriage. I had no choice but to stand there in excruciating pain and deliver my baby where I stood. I wish that my owner had more compassion and awareness that I have pain and feelings just like him, Im not a robot to pull his carriage without rest and proper care. Animal Aid Abroad works to re-educate communities around the world who rely on working animals for income, aiming to improve the health and welfare of these animals through encouraging humane treatment by owners. 22.01.2022 Bridging-Lanka UQ have sent us an update on their recent activity: "We don’t often tell the good news stories of the many donkeys that recover from grotesque injuries and are eventually released. This month we’ve got a couple of updates... Remember George from August’s donkey report? George’s procrastination in reporting an injured donkey almost cost the donkey its life! It had seriously infected leg wounds and a damaged hoof. That was on 22nd August. Altogether 24 treatment...Continue reading
21.01.2022 AAA partner group Pegasus in Israel have sent an update on the move to their new sanctuary: "We can finally say that Pegasus has successfully moved to our new location! The process was a difficult one but worth it in the end. Thankfully, all of our resident donkeys and horses are now settling into their new areas. It was a very difficult process to uproot most of the animals as the old sanctuary had been their home for so many years. But when they stepped their hooves into t...he fresh new dirt and saw the beautiful view of their spacious surroundings, all the animals got very excited! They started to explore the wide-open area, frequently running over to the fence to catch another glimpse of distant fields and groves. Our sweet rescue Eitan, however, could not see what the others saw. He is completely blind and has been with us at the sanctuary, after being saved from the hands of abuse. He was found down south wandering near a very busy highway, desperately searching for food and water - which he simply could not see. Luckily, caring people were able to pull Eitan to safety and we brought him to his forever home here at Pegasus. Our new sanctuary is perfect for our rescues with special needs. Donkeys and horses like Eitan have plenty of room to socialise and live comfortably, taking in the constant breeze and beautiful view of the nature around them, whether theyre seeing it or sensing it. Thank you for making these rescues possible through your donations." #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals

20.01.2022 The Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) have sent us an update on their recent activity: "Our primary work has been to treat poor working donkeys and other animals in need of welfare and health help. We are happy with the progress of our work and some of the impacts are clearly visible however, as long as the community was really down still t...Continue reading
20.01.2022 People for Animals Trust- Faridabad" Run By:- Ravi Dubey have sent pictures of Project Summer Lifeline, in which you can see that many different animals benefit from the provision of fresh, clean drinking water. 20.01.2022 AAA has a new partner group in Zambia - The Zambezi Working Donkey Project (ZWDP). They have sent us an update on their activity during July. "July was a positive month for ZWDP as we re-launched our Mobile Clinic after 4 months absence due to Covid-19 restrictions. While the pandemic continues to affect every aspect of life in Zambia, winter is the best time to reach the rural communities (while the weather is cool and dry) so we are working with community leaders to organi...se outreaches while applying strict attendance and distancing rules, as well as hygiene practices. Mutonga village in Mukuni Chiefdom has a large population with a great majority of households owning, or having access to use, donkey scotch carts. It is also somewhere that historically we have seen some of the worst cases of neglect and abuse due to the lack of knowledge about donkey welfare. In total we provided essential veterinary treatment, deworming and dipping to 121 working donkeys. The clinic was attended by 38 owners from 11 villages who we educated about the needs of donkeys, and how to work with them correctly. We also modified and provided sets of harness to replace the horrible ox-yokes on 15 scotch carts. While at Mutonga village an orphaned foal called Otis was brought to us by his owner who said that his mother died 3 months ago after being attacked with an axe. Poor Otis is very weak, severely malnourished and underweight. Added to that he has deformed back legs and his coat was completely matted with hundreds of burrs that took our guys hours to remove. He is now settling in at our rescue centre and we hope that with good food, warmth and a lot of love he will grow stronger and be able to live a comfortable life. In addition to the clinic at Mutonga we continued to conduct inspections at Libuyu and Maramba markets, and received drop-ins at our farm in town, where we treated a further 46 donkeys, and provided another 8 sets of harnesses. We are so grateful to Animal Aid Abroad (and their supporters) for partnering with us and enabling us to reach such a large number of donkeys desperately in need of help during these difficult times. On behalf of baby Otis and many others, THANK YOU! #Animalaidabroad #Animalcharity #Workinganimals
20.01.2022 AAA partner group, Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society (LAWCS) in Guinea aims to end the unnecessary suffering, pain and starving of working animals in Guinea through direct veterinary care and treatment for 4000 working animals and education programme for 25,000 animal owners and children. Working animals play a key role in the growth and development of the rural population in Kankan region, Republic of Guinea. Cattle, donkeys and horses are used for agricultural ...related activities and facilitating transport of goods and services for the population. These animals put food on the table for their owners and send many children to school. Unfortunately, these animals are used in horrible, unbearable and inhumane conditions. Sick, wounded, starving and very young animals are beaten and forced to work. Some of the animals even give off and die during working process. Children who should be exposed to kindness, respect, empathy and compassion for animals grow up seeing their elders abusing, beating and forcing the animals. The children are also the mainly abusers of the animals because they have learned it from their elders and think that is a normal and acceptable practice. The project was designed to change attitudes and behaviours toward these hardworking animals and improving their welfare and health. As a result of the relaxation of the Covid-19 restrictions in Guinea, LAWCS started visiting more communities with the education and free veterinary care for their working animals. The team visited 8 communities and educated 543 adults and children and treated 416 working animals. The people were grateful to receive them with the education and veterinary program. According to the animal owners, the program continues to improve the welfare and health of their animals and as a result, the animals are able to effectively and efficiently work for them. They also said that the program has made them value and respect the welfare and health of their animals. Many of the animal owners have started providing proper shelters and food for their animals. The local authorities continue to appreciate LAWCS as well. According to the local leaders, the program is greatly contributing to poverty eradication and the empowerment of rural people who depend on their animals for survival. #AnimalaidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals

18.01.2022 Bridging Lanka have found recently that in the post first wave Corona period, visitor numbers to their Mannar Donkey Clinic & Education Centre (DCEC) were steadily increasing. This past month, a large number 35 students and 35 parents from the Womens Madrasa came, more out of amusement than any love of donkeys. On arrival, their mocking and teasing attitude toward these animals gave the team a clear picture of their view. However after the presentation about donkeys, ans...wers to their doubts and cynicism AND having close contact with the donkeys, their biased attitudes soon crumbled. With each wave of visitors, especially local ones, they are noticing a corresponding positive change toward donkeys more generally in Mannar society. This is great news as this will have a flow on effect to those who actually own and work with donkeys on a day to day basis. Keep up the good work and stay tuned for more updates on the activities of Bridging Lanka. #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals

17.01.2022 During August, the Meru Animal Welfare Organisation (MAWO) in Tanzania carried out donkey clinic at Losoito village. A total of 321 donkeys were dewormed by using 1% Ivermectin and to control both endoparisite and ectoparasites for animals health. 65 donkeys had wounds and most of the wounds were due to poor harnessing, poor carts, tying of the leg with narrow rope and sometimes the donkeys bite each other. These wounds were cleaned with iodine, treated with pen strep (antib...iotics), meloxicom (pain relief) and topical antibiotic wound spray. Among the management items that were done during the donkey clinic was hoof trimming, in order to avoid rotting of the hooves as well as smoothing the hooves for pain relief while walking. Because of the wounds due to poor harnessing, the team carried out harnessing demonstrations to educate the community about the importance of humane harnessing for the animals health. #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals

14.01.2022 Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) works in the Geita region of northern west Tanzania to improve the welfare of working donkeys in the area: "Our main activity has been to treat donkeys, train the community and educate donkey owners to take care of their animals, and the result has been a legacy of good on-the-ground welfare for donkeys and improved livelihoods of people. Whilst facing many significant challenges resulting from the global pandemic, we have still been able to... make an incredible impact for working animals. In collaboration with Animal Aid Abroad we have a number of projects implemented as follows: First, new model carts and a new way of donkey harnessing, Second, we have a sanctuary-based project for both seriously sick and badly injured donkeys to live permanently at a sanctuary and some hospitalised and returned to their owners. Third, we have a mobile clinic/outreach program and emergency response team that also importantly provides humane treatment of animals education for children and donkey owners. Issues in focus include: Donkey wounds and pain as a result of ox yoke harnesses, overworking, overloading, beating and signs of diseases. The main cause of these issues being lack of empathy, little awareness and poverty. The sanctuary based project remains focused on rehabilitating sick and badly injured donkeys and other animals in need and is now providing shelter for 14 donkeys living permanently and 27 donkeys hospitalised that will return to their owners when they get better. In Bukombe, within a month we have managed to treat 303 donkeys with various conditions in both mobile clinics/ outreach extending to the sanctuary for a few cases as a referral point. Various conditions we noticed include, harness related sores, pains due to exhaustion but also beating from riders due to money and time pressure. Among the 303 working donkeys we attended, some had both welfare and health problems that include lameness due to tendon exhaustion, heamatoma, infectious eye disease, dental problems, equine trips, babesiosis, tumor and trauma. Alongside treatment we provided humane education to 26 donkey riders and 49 children in 2 sessions. Knowing that it is an integral part of measures to address the issue of bad traditional practices was done in all sessions we conducted clinics. We need to provide many hundreds of working donkeys with essential veterinary care, fresh drinking water, humane harnesses, blankets, padding and feed. We have crucial work to get done for the enormous difference we make for working donkeys and dogs in need. Thanks to Animal Aid Abroad in Australia for supporting TAHUCHA." #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals

10.01.2022 AAA's partner group in Uganda, AWPO, run mobile donkey clinics in their area in the hopes of improving working animals' lives, health and welfare as well as creating sustainable livelihoods for the poor households and communities the rely on these animals for income. last month they treated 241 donkeys against infectious / contagious diseases; wounds, pains, internal and external parasites, reproductive diseases, surgical interference, hoof problems, eye and social abandonmen...t conditions among others. Animal feeds, watering and shelter & hygiene advisory services were also given. Through these mobile clinics, as well as multi-media strategies employed to get the message of humane animal treatment out to the public, it is though that many families are benefiting from and changing attitudes towards having healthy and happy working animals. www.animalaidabroad.org #animalaidabroad #workinganimals #animalcharity
10.01.2022 AAA partner group, Hendro Animal Rescue Centre (HARC) in Sri Lanka has a fantastic new logo for their Centre. This is the group that $50,000 from Janet and Jacks Walk Across Australia is going to, to fund the build of the rescue centre. The land has already been purchased and the project is now up to stage 2: building the kennels and other buildings. ... As HARC is on two acres of land, they have hired a worker to undertake organic cultivation. The major crop they are trialling is turkey berries - in huge demand there. Turkey berry is used as both a food and herbal remedy for many physical ailments including high blood pressure, digestive issues, bacterial infections, anemia etc. This is in addition to the small income derived from murunga sales (another superfood). The worker keeps the property clean and is dedicated to keeping it weed free (see the photo of Abraham - a brilliant worker). Also pictured is Jerad, one of the workers distributing the turkey berry plants. The local street dog population continues to grow, unfortunately. The numbers are rising so rapidly. The team now have about 10 office (street) dogs which they feed fairly regularly. They are very loyal to the team and accompany them everywhere. 09.01.2022 AAA partner group LAWAZO in Butiama, Tanzania have sent us a report on their August activity: "LAZAWO conducted the donkey mobile clinic in Butiama villages at which 213 donkeys were provided with veterinary medical care, and 3 camels were also treated. In Butiama villages, LAZAWO has brought together the two formulated groups of donkey keeping champions each with 15 members so that they can exchange their skills on donkey welfare. The discussion was under the supervision of ...the LAZAWO team. One story of a mother with her donkey: It was a market day in a village when we meet Maria and her two donkeys, one donkey (named Maisha) with a very big load on her back and the other young donkey with no cargo (named Kadogo). The adult donkey, Maisha with the heavy cargo was walking and when Maisha saw us coming, she lay down. We then we had a dialogue with Maria as follows: LAZAWO: Why is Maisha is caring such huge and heavy cargo? Maria: This is the only adult donkey I have remaining LAZAWO: you said this is the only adult donkey remaining, what happened? Maria: I used to have 4 donkeys at my home, 9 months ago I found 3 of my donkeys had died. Maisha at that time had this small baby donkey, but as you can see he is still young and I cannot use him. Im not happy with Maisha caring this huge cargo but as you can see I can not force this young donkey and it is not easy for me to divide the cargo and carry it two times. We educated Maria on donkeys carrying capacity and promised to find a way to work with her very closely to prevent this situation occurring again." #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals
09.01.2022 Animal Welfare Protection Organization (AWPO), in partnership with AAA, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to give free examinations and treatments to working donkeys of the communities in the operational zone in Uganda. During their working donkey mobile clinics, awareness, education and training on the safe and effective harnessing of donkeys was carried out where it was possible with continuing COVID-19 restrictions. COVID-19 has exposed and necessitated further ass...istance for these vulnerable animals and owners. Benefits from the interventions carried out by AWPO are multi-sectoral in nature and improve the lives of the working donkeys resulting in improvements in the livelihoods of their poor owners and communities while changing mindsets of school children and veterinary workers to be compassionate to the animals. In the latest clinic, 167 working donkeys were treated for a range of health conditions. #AnimalAidAbroad #AnimalCharity #WorkingAnimals

08.01.2022 A man from Erukkalampiddy in Sri Lanka recently informed Bridging Lanka of a donkey accident. The driver of a tipper truck cruising at high speed to deliver its load of road gravel failed to notice the donkey on the side of the road. The result a broken leg! Back at the clinic, after a jab of anaesthetic, Dr Vincent reset the leg. The long recovery process has started. The donkey is enjoying the hospitality of the ICU facility provided by Otara of Embark. Grooming, nutritious food, water and daily redressing of the wound is the daily regimen. AAA supports groups like Bridging Lanka all over the world to provide veterinary care to working animals who would otherwise have none. 08.01.2022 The Nowzad charity operates the first and only donkey shelter in Afghanistan situated on the outskirts of Kabul. This year operations had to be put on hold as the coronavirus pandemic hit Afghanistan. A government enforced lockdown began in early April which was to last 19 weeks. The Nowzad team in Kabul went into lockdown which included the donkey sanctuary staff remaining at the shelter 24/7 to care for the residents with only resupply runs from the main clinic once per wee...k. All of the animals and the sanctuary staff came out of lockdown safely but it was a tough and very long period of isolation for all involved. The sanctuary is taking it day by day at the moment and have yet to restart their working donkey programme while the priority is protecting staff. This sponsors' update for 2020 will tell you more about activities during 2020 and provide an update on progress for their sponsored animals. 05.01.2022 September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, as promoted by the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management: https://ivapm.org/animal-pain-awareness-month/. Therefore, this month Animal Aid Abroad (AAA) is focusing on the unbearable pain millions of working animals endure each and every day around the globe. Imagine walking a mile in their shoes, to experience for a moment the suffering they must withstand on a daily basis. "I am a Camel in India named Deepa and I work ...all day giving tourists rides. The tourists think this is such a fun thing to do and dont seem to know any better. My working days are endless and all I can think about is the burning pain in my nose. As a young camel, some humans forced a horrible wooden peg through the fleshy part of my nose, then tied it to a rope so they could control me. It tears at my sore nostrils constantly. I often call out loudly to try and communicate the pain I am in but my owner will continue to pull at the rope until my ripped, infected nose bleeds. I feel desperate and am not sure how much longer I can go on working like this." Animal Aid Abroad works to improve the welfare of animals like Deepa. 04.01.2022 Bridging Lanka have sent us an account of a donkey who was involved in a car accident: "Nitharshan, a student from Keeri, reported a donkey injury in a high density area of the village with narrow streets and blind spots. We are surmising that a vehicle turned a corner in a laneway just wide enough for it with nowhere for the donkey to escape, and bang! Nitharshan and his mother gave the suffering donkey some eggplants to eat. These had just been bought for their home use. Th...ese kind folk also sprayed some cooling water on the donkeys face and provided some drinking water as well. We arrived and gently moved the donkey into our vehicle and sped off to the clinic for treatment. In time were hoping for a full recovery." 04.01.2022 Here is the October update from AAA partner group LAZAWO from the Butiama-Mara Region in Tanzania. "In October we attended 517 donkeys in the Butiama district for various different welfare and health issues. Mostly, we have been encountering wounds caused by tethering and beating, pneumonia, mange, mite infestation, trypanasomiasis, and a few cases of rabid donkeys near the Serengeti national park. 110 donkeys were vaccinated against rabies and along with the mobile vet clini...c we did, we educated 39 young children and also trained 83 donkey owners about how a certain practice can be detrimental to their animals’ health. This was done in three wards of Butiama district with a total of nine villages. A Caruso well construction has been completed in October and it will help us to supply donkeys with water during the drought conditions. The water will also be used to plant trees for environmental recovery, planting grasses and agribusiness for the community, and at the same time, people will be getting water for their home use. LAZAWO would like to extend sincere thanks to Animal Aid Abroad for the sponsorship of the Caruso well, mobile veterinary clinics and outreach in Butiama villages." www.animalaidabroad.org #animalaidabroad #animalcharity #workinganimals

03.01.2022 Nose peg wounds are very common in working camels. Help in Suffering- Jaipur, Rajasthan-India see lots of camels everyday with these wounds. Although they give customised smooth plastic nose pegs to the owners, the excessive pulling to control the animal is the cause of the wounds. One day recently, an owner came to the HIS shelter. His camel had a big wound and torn nose. The team cleaned the wound, and administered antibiotics and pain killers. The owner was advised to keep... the wound clean and not to pull the ropes forcefully. During July, HIS treated 252 camels, and 117 other animals including dogs, goats, cattle and horses.
