25.01.2022 We have had a few people into the nursery this month advising us that they believe their Xmas solar lights have worked to keep possums out of their trees!! Anyone got any feedback on this .... Greener Life nursery sells these awesome Butterfly ones that change colours (dragonfly available as well). Were $19.99 - now $12.99 we would love to know if they really have any impact!

25.01.2022 Remember it is not always possums! As your citrus ripens you may find strange things happening to it. Cleanly peeled but still hanging from the tree? ..... you may need to face the possibility that you have rats in your garden - its not always possums! Arrrgghhh- send out the cat for this one ....

24.01.2022 There really is no answer to "What can I plant that a possum won't destroy" because as a nursery owner I don't want to promise anything that I can not guarantee but we do keep track of plants that we have had no or very few possum destroying complaints about but my number 1 evergreen hedging plant to try is the fabulous OLIVE tree - stunning silver foliage, tough and dry tolerant and to date no one has complained that possums eat them! Found this garden pic on a website call Secretgardens.com.au the plant combination is perfect for keeping possums away as they don't tend to like flowering fragrant lavender either! Has anyone found their possums eating lavender or olive trees??? Often rats and rabbits do!!

15.01.2022 Below is an extract from the City of Whitehorse in Melbourne's website (commences with heading EXTRACT ). You can pay $100's for the possum man to trap a possum for you but it must be releasedwithin 50 metres of where it was captured. Possums are creatures of habit and will head straight back from wence they came. Animal Away gives you a chance to break the habit of the possum returning to your property... just might be worth a go ! Extract "Possums and the Law It is illegal to handle or interfere with possums except when they are in your roof, or other buildings. Only brush-tail possums can be trapped in appropriate traps by the householder or a licensed wildlife controller. Trapped possums must be released that day on the same property, in their own territory, within 50 metres of the capture site. Breaching any of these regulations carries a penalty of up to $5000. There is no other legal avenue to deal with possums. Relocating possums beyond 50 metres is both illegal and inhumane."

13.01.2022 WOW Alstroemerias aka Princess Lilly can bring a riot of colour to any garden bed, this mass planting is one of the best I have seen ( some white vinca have been blended in as a repeater to break up the colours) . Use them to fill out a slightly dryer spot bathed in morning sun. Such a great , tough and low water tolerant plant. Full bloom now..... Stop and take some time out and stare at these ones ! It also seems that possums tend to pick out the seeds on these and leave the flowers alone ...... Anyone have possums eating princess Lilly flowers ?

06.01.2022 There are so many reasons to love hydrangeas ; the amazing mass of flowers over the warm weather is certainly the main reason! Did you also know that possums are not likely to eat or fossick through hydrangeas as they are toxic to them so fill you garden with them and enjoy flowers this year. If the possums are entering your trees via the ground - try planting some hydrangeas at the base of the trees - just make sure they are well watered in the summer.

02.01.2022 So as we head into a dry summer the possums will be out to see what they can feast on in your garden. With the forecast for a dry summer ahead you may want to help protect other plants with the addition of clusters of Euphorbias. These are one of my favorite plants with their unique foliage forms and growth habit options as well as their amazing colours and year round interest. They are extremely dry tolerant and show off during the warmer months as well as autumn..... nurser...ies should be getting well stocked with this fantastic plants which traditionally have not interested possums due to the toxicity of their sap !!! Be mindful if you cut the flower heads off to use gloves and let the sap ooze freely - or better still just let them seed into the garden. Pictured here are Wulfenni, Ascot Rainbow, Blackbird, Tiny Tim, Craigieburn - check them out at you local nursery or feel free to ask about which ones to plant where! Some can grow to 1m, others 40-60cm and some can be used as groundcover. See more
