24.01.2022 When we work with our dogs we can make a choice in how we engage them in learning to achieve behaviour change results. Just as a teacher can inspire young minds in schools, equally, animals can be inspired by their teachers - we just need to arrange the environment in a thoughtful way, and provide smart reinforcement. As a teacher and trainer, we should be seeking to make an animal's heart sing during learning. Professionals have a choice to constantly seek out more and more information to fuel skills required for best practice.
23.01.2022 "In Shark Bay, Australia, bottlenose dolphins that arent related have been observed teaching each other a new way to use a tool, a behavior that until now scientists have found only in humans and other great apes."

23.01.2022 "New findings reveal how ants increase their collective sensing power to help them navigate complex terrains. Ants use their numbers to overcome navigational challenges that are too large and disorienting to be tackled by any single individual."
22.01.2022 Fish training! A good example of a behaviour that fish can learn to improve their husbandry and cleaning routines. Moving into a net or scoop voluntarily, while cleaning takes place or to do a visual inspection, is a great way to let them participate in their own care. Trained with positive reinforcement.
21.01.2022 "Early weaning increases aggression and stereotypic behaviour in cats, shows a new study... Based on the study conducted at the University of Helsinki, the recommended weaning age of 12 weeks should be raised by at least two weeks. Delaying weaning is an easy and cost-efficient way of improving the quality of life of cats."

19.01.2022 This may look simple, but there were many steps taken to get to this point. Im teaching a nose target to one wolf while teaching the others to stay at a distan...ce. When I first began observing and interacting with these wolves, if I walked up with anything in my hands, they would quickly grab whatever was in my hands and run away. If I tossed a food bit to one, they would fight with each other to get the food reinforcer. In order to change a behavior, we need to replace it with another. I taught each wolf to stand at a distance from each other and focus on me. When I had 1-2 seconds of the individual wolfs attention, I would toss a food reinforcer. I then began tossing reinforcers to each on an intermittent schedule of reinforcement. Then I began adding the target to one, while reinforcing the others for keeping a distance. Mind you, this wolf could easily grab this target stick and run. When we know better, we do better. These wolves have helped me fine-tune my training and communication with them through training. Pay attention to tomorrows post for more training with these wolves.

12.01.2022 "Our research demonstrates that these snakes actively seek out social interaction and prefer to join and remain with larger groups and that their social interaction patterns are influenced by consistent individual differences in boldness and sociability."
11.01.2022 "Rats, like humans, avoid actions that can cause pain to their fellow beings, scientists have found. This trait, known as harm aversion, is seen as an important part of moral development in humans but is reduced in violent antisocial individuals."
11.01.2022 Great chicken enrichment!
09.01.2022 Animal scientists have long pondered the function of zebras distinct stripes, and a growing consensus now suggests that they deter insects, possibly by confusing bugs motion detection systems that control approach and landing.
07.01.2022 Tortoise tactile! Tortoises have very sensitive shells. Animals repeat what works for them.

06.01.2022 "In humans, adolescence is often associated with increased risk taking, peer influence and conflict with parents. This is probably due to multiple factors including hormonal changes, brain and cognitive development and changes in the social environment...The canine research suggests certain behaviours that we associate with teenagers are not unique to humans." https://royalsocietypublishing.org/d/10.1098/rsbl.2020.0097
