20.01.2022 Meet beautiful Ollie, a 12-week-old Boxer. Ollie was enjoying an afternoon of fun, playing with his neighbours kids and being fed treats when he started to choke on one of the treats. Ollies hoomans quickly tried to dislodge the treat, however, Ollie continued to choke. Jumping in the car to go to our Tanawha hospital, Ollies breathing became laboured and his hoomans had to start performing CPR. When Ollie arrived at our hospital he was in severe respiratory distress and r...equired immediate intubation. Upon examination, Ollie had developed an obstructive pulmonary oedema a complication with chocking where Ollies lungs had filled with fluid. Obstructive pulmonary oedema is an acute medical emergency which requires intensive care but can be resolved. Ollie needed to be placed on mechanical ventilation to keep his lungs open. After just under 24 hours Ollie had improved immensely and was able to be gradually weaned from the ventilator and onto nasal oxygen support. Ollie continued to improve in leaps and bounds, and after 36 hours with us, he had improved enough to go home to his very relieved hoomans.

19.01.2022 Smiles after a successful endoscopic procedure! Freya, a 2-year-old Portuguese Water Dog, visited us not feeling very well with her hoomans suspecting she may have ingested a stuffed toy. Upon examination, we found Freya had in fact eaten something she shouldnt have. An endoscopic retrieval (this is when a long, flexible tube with a lighted camera and a grasping tool at its tip is inserted down the oesophagus/stomach) was performed to remove the item which turned out to be a large black sock!

17.01.2022 One year ago today we celebrated Henrys recovery and reunion her with her hoomans. Henry, a 4-year-old kelpie cross, survived a house fire which left her battling severe smoke inhalation. After almost a week in intensive care, Henry beat all odds and returned home to her family. Today, were looking back on her journey to recovery.

Scotty came into our hospital after a good samaritan found him cold and wet on the ground in local bushland, most likely having fallen out of his mums pouch.

11.01.2022 Meet 18-month-old groodle Humphrey. Spending a late afternoon playing in and around the pool with his hoomans, Humphrey began to limp, and a little bit of blood was noticed on the ground. Finding a laceration and with Humphry starting to shake a trip us was in need. Upon inspection, Dr Gabby at our Tanawha hospital found it wasn’t a cut Humphrey had, but two of his paws were severely burnt! Because our pooches pads are very sensitive, the burns to Humphrey's paws were kind of... like a third-degree sunburn. Even though it wasn’t an extremely hot afternoon and the ground at Humphrey’s home was comfortable for his hoomans to sit on, it was still warm enough to cause damage. After treatment from our team, which included the wound being thoroughly cleaned, bandaging, and medication given, Humphrey was able to go home with his hoomans. Five days later, Humphrey’s paws are almost healed (see pic). 08.01.2022 What a silly sausage! In our hospitals we are used to seeing pets who have eaten unusual items, from socks, underwear, toys and even towels! But this little 2-year-old Dachshund found his way into a cupboard and ate a tampon of all things! After inducing emesis to remove it, this little cutie pie was feeling much better.

08.01.2022 Meet Hayley, a 2-year-old English Staffordshire Bull Terrier, who came to us after being bitten by a brown snake. When Hayley arrived, she was already showing signs of being affected by the snakes venom her pupils were dilated, she was experiencing facial twitching, and her respiratory muscles were being affected by paralysis making it difficult for her to breathe. There was also a concern as Hayley had previously been diagnosed with coagulopathy (when the bloods clot-forming ability is impaired) since snake venom can cause bleeding disorders. Our Pet ICU team administered two vials of anti-venom, pain relief, and monitored Hayleys breathing and blood clotting. After five days, with intensive care from the team, Hayleys paralysis resolved and with physio she gained the strength to stand and was able to go home to her family.

05.01.2022 Meet the adventurous Duke. Duke was bought into our Tanawha hospital by a lovely family who thought he might be lost. We scanned Duke for his microchip and luckily we were able to contact his owners as their details were up to date. His worried family were excited to hear from us as he had been missing for eight weeks. It turned out Duke went on an adventure, traveling quite a distance through the bush and couldnt find his way home! 02.01.2022 What has Animal Emergency Service's and Bondi Vet Dr Gerardo found in this pup's ear? Could it be a spider?!

01.01.2022 Meet Jethro a 4-month-old Tonkinese who survived a snake attack! While outside exploring with supervision from his hoomans, Jethro was grabbed on the head by a 2-metre carpet python which then started to constrict around Jethros little body! Jethros fast-acting and fast-thinking hoomans managed to pry the python off Jethro and rushed him a near-by local vet for initial treatment before being transferred to our Carrara hospital for further care. Jethro was one lucky kitten ...whose only injuries were a humeral fracture (a fracture to his upper arm bone in his front leg) and some bite marks on his head. Usually, in cases where a snake has constricted, injuries include fractures to the ribs as well as bruising and damage to the lungs. Along with close monitoring from our team and fluid therapy to aid in hydration and blood delivery, Jethros fur around the puncture marks was clipped and the wounds cleaned to prevent infection. Jethro also underwent surgery to mend the fracture in his leg from the team at Veterinary Specialist Services. See more
