25.01.2022 PROFESSIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOPS Our Brisbane Consultant, Lee, and Maya the Greenwing Macaw had the pleasure of presenting a Parrot Training workshop to the... team at RSPCA School for Dogs this afternoon. Learning how to work with other species is a great way for trainers and behaviour consultants to hone their technical, mechanical and observational skills. We were delighted that the team at the RSPCA were keen to learn this new skill! We had a great time working with this fantastic bunch of trainers some of who were brave enough to step out of their comfort zone and work with a large Macaw! We are available to run customised, professional training workshops for a variety of organisations including shelters/rescues, pet shops, vet clinics, zoos, animal training businesses or anyone who is interested in learning about parrot behaviour and training! Get in touch if you are interested [email protected] 0477 676 312

17.01.2022 One from the archives! This beautiful Ridgeback and her family needed help getting her to settle down and walk politely on lead when she was in the vicinity of other dogs. With the proper application of positive reinforcement training and some hard work from her humans, Sascha came along in leaps and bound. Shown in this video you can see Sascha walking past my dog and I with barely a glance in our direction. A huge improvement on her prior behaviour. ... If you need help overcoming a similar issue with your dog please get in touch! We would love to help you. [email protected] 0477 676 312

13.01.2022 Harry the German Shorthaired Pointer Our Behaviour Consultant, Lee, recently had the pleasure of meeting Harry and his family. Unfortunately after a big move to Queensland from interstate Harry developed some problematic behaviours when left home alone! ... His humans quickly realised that they needed help teaching Harry that being home alone isn't so bad, so they contacted us for a Consultation. We devloped a training plan customised to Harry and his family and I can't wait to see how he progresses! Quaratine is a great time to work through behaviour problems with your dog! Virtual sessions utilising video conference platforms can be organised to work with clients whilst maintaining safe social distance and we have plenty of experiencing consulting this way as we have offered it for many years! If you would like to *Quarantrain* your dog please get in touch! [email protected] 0477 676 312

13.01.2022 CONSENT + COOPERATIVE CARE By giving our dogs the choice to consent and participate in their own care we can signficantly decrease stress, anxiety and fear related to handling, husbandry or medical proceedures and increase cooperation from our dogs. In this video I am working with my dog, Phi, on a care proceedure for her ears. Unfortunately recently she has been getting hematomas on her ears and these need to be drained. Phi can be uncomfortable with handling and so... working on a way for her to let me know when she is ready to go (can you spot the behaviour that indicates I can proceed with handling?) helps to give her control and this builds her confidence. You can see me first work on wiping her ear with a cool, wet wipe to imitate an alcohol swab and then I use a skewer to imitate the feeling of a syringe against the hematoma. The other benefit to this training is she does not need to be restrained for the proceedure, another activity which causes her increased stress and anxiety. I have used this same method to teach her to participate in nail trims too! An activity which previously would have her avoiding me like the plague if I had the nail clippers in my hand or even if she *thought* I had them! (video of nail trims coming soon!) We still have more work to do on this behaviour before it is ready for 'real life' but it won't take long to progress to that point as we have a lot of $$ in our trust account and a long history of learning together! If you have a dog that needs help feeling more comfortable with husbandry, care or medical proceedures please get in touch we can help! Our Trainer and Behaviour Consultant is Fear Free Certified and can partner with your vet (or recommend a Fear Free Clinic) to assist you on working together to decrease your dogs (and your) anxiety, fear and stress. 08.01.2022 D I S T R A C T I O N S Phi and I hit the beach this AM and it gave me a great opportunity to practise recall under distraction! In this video you can see Phi 'hunting' the small fish that are in the water (don't worry she never gets close!). As you can see she is pretty focused on her mission! But even though she is intent on chasing fish her response to my recall cue is immediate and enthusiastic! ... She is then reinforced twice! Once with food, followed by the opportunity to go back to the prior activity of chasing fish. This method helps to teach our dogs that recall doesn't = end of fun.... But rather that it is just the opportunity to gain access to even more reinforcement! Could I just call her back and then reinforce with continued access to hunting?.... Absolutely as we have a long history of reinforcement built into her recall cue but I am purposely using this as an opportunity to strengthen that foundation so that her recall is reliable under even higher levels of distraction (aka kangaroos)! If you need help teaching your dog to recall under distraction get in touch! Fb @animalhausbehaviour [email protected] 0477 676 312 Web: www.animalhausbehaviour.com.au

07.01.2022 PUPPY BITING One of the most common questions dog trainers get asked during puppy private sessions or group classes is 'How do I stop my puppy from biting!?'. Our Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Behaviour Consultant, Lee, has written a comprehensive blog post on just this topic! Check it out below ... Just ignoring puppy biting is not the solution to this problem, puppy biting won't just go away with time and needs to be addressed as early as possible to prevent the behaviour escalating or becoming problematic as your dog gets older. If you need help with an overly enthusiastic puppy (or older dog!) then get in touch, we can help! [email protected] 0477 676 312

07.01.2022 WORDS/PHRASES THAT RUFFLE TRAINERS' FEATHERS ... AND WHY! So I came across an interesting post started on a dog trainer's personal FB page today and it got me t...hinking. She asked "what words annoy you when you hear them?" She did state she didn't want the "why" of it just the words/phrases. As I scrolled down her comments I realized I agreed with many and thought -- if a non-dog behavior expert was reading this they might think "why do these words bother so many trainers?!" So, I decided to lay this out and explain the "why" to a lot of this. Why trainers don't like the following words/phrases: DOG OWNER SAYS: MY DOG IS SO STUBBORN! DOG TRAINER HEARS: I don't know how to communicate/train properly with my dog and she's not doing what I ask so I assume she's hard-headed. REALITY: I get it. Dog owners aren't usually dog trainers, hence why I have a job! So, you don't know what you don't know. However, if your dog isn't listening or "obeying" you the reality is likely that the dog isn't listening because of one, several or all of these factors: hasn't been trained to understand what you are asking of him, is confused, is stressed, and/or has made a poor association with the thing you ask and therefore won't do it at all out of fear/stress/anxiety. BOTTOM LINE: Training will fix this label. DOG OWNER SAYS: HE'S BEING DOMINANT! DOG TRAINER HEARS: I watch a lot of Cesar Milan but don't really know exactly what all that entails .... and/or I think if a dog is doing a pushy or bratty behavior it's because he's dominant and "thinks he's boss". REALITY: Your dog can't be "dominant". It's not a personality trait. It's not like saying my brother is "out-going". Dominance is fluid and only happens in certain contexts. Usually over resources and a dog that is aggressive or insecure is reacting for other reasons that aren't even related to "dominance". I could go on and on about this topic. It's very sadly been used and misused by a lot of trainers and even still by some trainers today. The truth is that science has shown other answers to what decades ago was always blamed for "dominance". You can read more on dominance in dogs here: http://bit.ly/2GElznQ BOTTOM LINE: Get to the root of the problem with a qualified professional (that doesn't adhere to the dominance/pack theory of yonder years.) DOG OWNER SAYS: WE TRIED POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT TRAINING, IT DIDN'T WORK. DOG TRAINER HEARS: We did that a couple times, didn't get immediate results so gave up and said it doesn't work. REALITY: The thing with positive reinforcement-based training is that it does, in fact, take work, consistency and dedication on your part. It's not magic and it never works if you only do it a few times or if you are inconsistent. You often see immediate results but for them to "stick", and for long-term goals like great leash work (no pulling on leash) coming when called in distractions you will need to be consistent and work at it. BOTTOM LINE: Don't give up. Listen to your well-educated, qualified, positive reinforcement trainer ... and stay consistent! DOG OWNER SAYS: OH, HE'S KNOWS WHAT HE DID/HE KNOWS HE WAS WRONG! DOG TRAINER HEARS: My dog is trying my patience on purpose and doesn't listen just to spite me even though that's not the case because dogs aren't humans so they aren't spiteful and do things "on purpose". REALITY: Dogs that continually do things do so because it works and usually there is some kind of reward in it for them, even if just the satisfaction of chewing things or tearing something up ... or they had to potty so they did it on the floor because they just couldn't hold it ... or they were anxious when left alone and so they peed the floor from anxiety/stress (not uncommon at all). Also, dogs that *appear* to have look of guilt are only doing this based on muscle memory --- the last time she entered the room and I was in this spot she was mad so I'll hang my head low in hopes she doesn't become confrontational --- or your body language, which dogs read faaaar better than you can even realize. Remember dogs can smell a seizure so they can smell when your adrenaline is up and your mood is changing as well as your eyes, your face, everything. BOTTOM LINE: Your dog isn't plotting against you. He just needs proper guidance and training on what to do. These are just a few things that I think trainers hear very often and have different "meanings" for dog owners than they do for trainers. I will say this .... trust your trainer's knowledge unless you have a good reason not to. They aren't there to make your life miserable or make you feel like you don't know what you're talking about. They just want to explain why your dog is doing what he's doing and help you overcome it. Follow their advice and expertise and you should be well on your way! Happy training!
