22.01.2022 A Sydney couple who bound reptiles in stockings and stuffed them in speakers and toy trucks before attempting to post them overseas have been jailed. Australian... Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment investigators uncovered that Zheyuan Qiu and Ut Lei Lei had attempted to export 17 packages containing 45 native species to Hong Kong and Taiwan between November 2018 and January 2020. Among the species were Shingleback, Blue-tongue and Bearded Dragon lizards, Eastern long-necked and Saw-shelled turtles, pythons and a deadly Red-bellied black snake. A search of their residence lead to the seizure of a further 205 reptiles with 106 of these identified as non-native and listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The sentencing of Qiu to 5 years imprisonment and Lei Lei to 2 years and 10 months imprisonment at the NSW District Court sends a strong warning to those involved in the cruel and exploitative crime of illegal wildlife trafficking. If you have any information about the attempted illegal import or export of wildlife, contact [email protected] or [email protected]. 12.01.2022 Thanks for all your comments and questions on this important topic. For the most up to date information on the changes please continue to check our webpages on ...the links below. We will continue to update the webpages over time. >----------------------------------------------------------> Amendments to the CAT MANAGEMENT ACT 2009 are changing the way cats are cared for and managed in Tasmania. These changes will impact all cat owners and we want to tell you about the changes that may be important to you. Some of the changes come into effect TODAY, with other changes starting in March 2022, to give people time to adjust to the new requirements. Commencing today (1 March 2021): * A person will be permitted to trap a cat on their private property, as long as any cat that is trapped is either returned to its owner or taken to a cat management facility. * A cat that is being cared for at a cat management facility must be microchipped and desexed before being reclaimed from the facility. * Primary producers or occupiers of production premises will have more options for managing stray and feral cats affecting their land or premises. Commencing in MARCH 2022: * Cats must be microchipped and desexed by four months of age. * A person must not keep more than four cats, over the age of four months, on their property without a multiple cat permit. * The State Government will no longer be registering cat breeders. Anyone wishing to breed a cat in Tasmania will be required to be a member of a cat organisation or will have the option of applying for a conditional permit to breed a cat. * The option of a Care Agreement on the sale of a cat will be removed. Biosecurity Tasmania will be providing more information about these changes, and what they mean for cat owners over the coming months. 10.01.2022 BREAKING: NSW TO END THE USE OF DOLPHINS FOR ENTERTAINMENT. New regulations will effectively stop any future dolphin ‘abuse-ment’ park from setting up in NSW an...d end the breeding of dolphins, whales and porpoises for entertainment. WE DID IT! No more dolphins will be born into an industry with backyard pools, or be forced to do circus-style tricks. With these regulations introduced by Minister Matt Kean MP, the abuse of dolphins in so-called entertainment is coming to an end in NSW. These changes were urgently needed to ensure no more animals are born into this collapsing industry. A dolphin born today could live for up to 50 years, meaning they could still be in a dolphinarium in 2070. The writing is on the wall these animals were not born to perform. They do not exist for our entertainment. They deserve a life worth living, and NSW has recognised this with these new regulations. Queensland is now the only state in Australia still breeding dolphins for entertainment and it’s a global embarrassment. The AJP will be working to get similar Regulations passed in QLD- time to #EmptyTheTanks Australia-wide
