23.01.2022 This is Billie. A few months ago she had a horrible accident when slipped on the floor and dislocated her hip Despite the very best specialists on the case, there were numerous complications... All up she had 3 surgeries to try to fix her hip. This meant she had around 11 weeks of cage rest, her leg muscles were almost non existent and that leg of hers... she could barely use it. Billie was referred to us right after her last surgery so that we could work with the special...ist at @vsos_vets to help Billie build strength in that leg and get her moving well again. This video was taken today, 5 weeks after we first saw her. 22.01.2022 Last weekend we spent another weekend down at @possumwood_wildlife sanctuary with @aussiemobilevet and @myvetanimalhospital. Plenty of action this weekend - Most of our original burns victims are close to making a full recovery which is great news . We also brought in 5 new kangaroos from another sanctuary to continue their treatment and errected private suite enclosure for our biggest resident - a 70kg male kangaroo. Ash the baby Wombat you can see here is recovering well ...from his mange, all his scabs have gone and his hair is starting to grow back. Hell be very handsome soon And lastly, to poor little girl was brought to us as an emergency just before we left. Her mum was hit by a car and sadly didnt make it, while she had multiple injuries ranging from widespread bruising, a fractured leg and multiple lacerations. @draudreyshen had her surgical skills tested as she did what she could to save the little one. She ended up with a dozen tiny stitches, and a teeny-weeny leg splint. 20.01.2022 Wed like to introduce you to Chaz, a 1 year old blue cattle dog who recently suffered a horrific injury leaving him unable to walk Chaz was hit by a motorbike, the impact dislocating his spine in several places. He was lucky to even survive such a traumatic accident . The incredible team at @arhvets, lead by Dr Sarah Goldsmid operated on him to, literally, put his spine back in place Today Chaz was released from hospital and made his way to us to get fitted for his brand... new @walkinpets wheelchair. Here he is taking his first steps since the accident 2 weeks ago. No one knows exactly how much Chaz will improve. If one day he will walk again on his own, or if this wheelchair is where hell spend the rest of his life. 20.01.2022 Heres Enzo our little Boston Terrier patient whos doing some rehab for his radial nerve palsy. As you can see, he hasnt got full use of his left forelimb. This happened after an unfortunate incident where a jogger ran in to him What were doing with these hi-5 exercises is encouraging to use his forelimb to get his nerves firing and work proprioception (positional awareness). As he improves we change the position of where hes touching with his paw to make him vary ...the muscles which hes using. Once he can put his left paw on the ground and support his weight, well switch it up to the other side so hes then building more strength Then theres a load of variations that we can layer on top such as increasing his reaction speed, putting him on an unstable surface and so on so its always a challenge. Its a great solution for Enzo as off the shelf braces werent fitting great, causing abrasions on his skin and occasionally his leg was swelling. 18.01.2022 What a difference 2 weeks makes! Bonnie contracted a rare neurological condition called polyradiculoneuritis, aka Coonhound paralysis. The condition attacks the nervous system, causing the peripheral nervous system to become paralysed. The first part of the video you can see Bonnie trying to swim. This was about 6 weeks after her diagnosis. She was so week we had to make her a chin rest to stop her head from falling below the water ... The next 2 clips were just to weeks later. She doesn't need a chin rest anymore, and you can see how much more strength she has in her legs. She's even beginning to walk in our underwater treadmill! Bonnie's goal is to be walking by Christmas... However, thats not stopping him from doing his exercises to get his leg working again.... 15.01.2022 Earlier this week were were very fortunate to be invited by Dr Alen Lai from @northsidevetspecialists to observe him perform a unique orthopaedic surgery on a kangaroo! Hippy the kangaroo was rescued by @possumwood_wildlife 2 weeks ago when he was found hanging from a fence. He had several injuries, including multiple fractures in his toe, but the biggest problem was that he dislocated his hip, rupturing the main ligament which meant that the hip would never stay in place. F...ortunately for Hippy, Dr Alen and Dr Ross were kind enough to gjve up time from their busy schedule to perform a toggle pin operation, which replaces the destroyed ligament. Theyve done this plenty of times on dogs, but never on a kangaroo. Being 2 weeks after the injury, there was lots of scar tissue and there was a moment that looked as though they might not be able to get the hip back in However, being the skilled surgeons they are, and with a bit of persistence they were able to relocate it after an hr in theatre. 14.01.2022 Meet Shelby, a gorgeous 13yr old Border Collie with Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) and arthritis. Shelby comes in twice a week for his hydrotherapy treatment to help keep him strong and mobile. Dogs who duffer from DM suffer from loss of coordination, function and strength as they age, so it becomes really important to maintain as much function as possible to prevent a rapid decline in health. Winston is only 7 months old, but hes already showing signs of painful hips. Not to mention his back is also very tender due to him compensating.
