16.01.2022 What a brilliant feed bin idea!!! No scrapping around and wasted feed on the floor and the feed would be kept dry in the rain (Ps not my photo) **this was pos...ted originally in 2016 and is gaining a lot of attention again(2020). I never got around to making one but with winter on its way here in Australia and possibly some spare time on our hands in isolation, who knows I may actually make one. If anyone has made one or found instructions to make this please add to this post or the community posts on this page. Stay safe everyone xxx See more

15.01.2022 Please DO NOT GIVE WATER TO KOALAS BY POURING WATER FROM BOTTLES INTO THEIR MOUTHS. PLACE A BOWL OF WATER ON THE GROUND OR POUR THE WATER IN TO YOUR HAT/HELMET/...CUP ETC AND HOLD NEAR KOALAS MOUTH SO THAT IT CAN LAP AT IT With all the facebook posts about wonderful people caring for wildlife amidst the fire and heat disasters over these past weeks a silent tragedy is happening. Koalas are DYING because people are trying their best to help but dont understand how a koala actually drinks. The little Koala seen in the middle picture is Arnie. He comes from a little town north of Bairnsdale. Arnie survived the heat wave AND fires with only minor burns to his feet and hands. His burns were healing. He survived losing his mum and the loss of his home. He was found by some very caring people who did what any human would do when they find a distressed animal, and offered him a drink from their bottle of water. They were just trying to help. They didnt know that it is dangerous for Koalas to drink this way. They didnt know that Koalas usually get most of their water via the gum leaves that they eat and they dont often drink water, but when they do, they are face down and lapping small amounts with their tongue. They didnt know that when a Koala holds it head up and takes in too much water, it can easily get in to their lungs and cause Aspiration Pneumonia, which is usually fatal. This is exactly what happened to little Arnie. Despite a mammoth rescue effort involving all three emergency services and wildlife rescuers he died more specifically he drowned. It was heartbreaking for everyone involved. That is why we want to share this post. So people can help in the best way possible. If you find a Koala in need of help in the heat or in a fire zone, please DO NOT OFFER IT WATER BY TIPPINY IT FROM A BOTTLE OR CUP INTO THEIR MOUTHS AND NEVER FORCE A KOALA TO DRINK. IF it is safe to do so then catch it in a blanket and transport to the nearest shelter, otherwise take note of its location and let someone know the details. Please note that Koalas can cause nasty injuries so if the Koala is resisting do not try and pick it up. If you are nowhere near help then the best way to hydrate koalas is to PLACE A BOWL OF WATER ON THE GROUND OR POUR THE WATER IN TO YOUR HAT/HELMET/CUP ETC AND HOLD NEAR KOALAS MOUTH SO THAT IT CAN LAP AT IT, FACE DOWN. PLEASE remember that Koalas are arboreal and nocturnal. If you see one sitting on the ground during the day then please contact a wildlife rescue organisation. They are usually very stressed if they are at the point of allowing human interaction, so please do not try and take selfies with the animal as you are just causing continued stress. PLEASE share this. With all the videos going viral of people giving them water from their bottles, the koalas have an added risk, during an already dangerous time! Please tell all of your friends... and if you see a video of someone pouring water out for a Koala comment on it saying: "PLEASE DO NOT GIVE KOALAS WATER BY POURING IT. JUST LET THEM LAP AT THEIR OWN PACE. IF IT GETS IN THEIR LUNGS IT COULD KILL THEM.

15.01.2022 HOW TO MAKE TURMERIC 2000% STRONGER WITH A HOMEMADE PASTE TO HELP SMASH CANCER & ARTHRITIS! It is estimated that 10% of cancer is genetic and 90% is a result o...f lifestyle and environmental factors. Over 6 million (and growing) dogs die from cancer each year! More than 1 in 2 dogs and 1 in 3 cats are diagnosed with cancer. A new turmeric study reveals that one of the worlds most extensively researched herbs has the ability to selectively target and destroy cancer stem cells, while having little to no toxicity on normal stem cells. This means that, unlike chemotherapy which will destroy regular healthy cells, turmeric will only go after cancer cells in you and your pets! The only problem is with using turmeric to smash cancer or to heal inflammation like arthritis is its low bioavailability when eaten on its own. You see, approximately 5% of the spice turmeric is composed of the active compound curcumin and this is the stuff that gives turmeric its power. Then, to top it all off, turmeric root is poorly absorbed across the G.I. tract and is rapidly cleared from the blood. If pets or people are given turmeric root, within an hour, theres a little tiny bit that actually makes its way into their blood stream. The reason for this is because the liver is actively trying to get rid of it! So, while a ton of pet owners may be giving their pets turmeric, most are seeing little to no results. FEAR NOT! THERE IS A SOLUTION! Theres an easy-to-make recipe that will actually make turmeric root powder, and its power-punching curcumin, over 2000% more readily available to your pets body! The solution? An old Ayurvedic recipe called Turmeric Paste (aka Golden Paste) that has been prepared in India for thousands of years! How is it prepared in India? With fat and black pepper. Amazing how they could figure that out without double blind trials. (Though maybe it just tastes good, and its merely coincidence?) -Michael Greger, M.D A source of fresh ground black pepper and a healthy fat can turn this solo herb, turmeric, into a super powerful rock band! According to research, about 5% of black pepper by weight is comprised of a compound called piperine, which enhances the bioavailability of Turmeric. Australian Vet, Dr. Doug English, advises to add freshly ground peppercorns (piperine) to your mixture of turmeric root, piperine will increase intestinal absorption allowing time for the curcumin to be taken up into the blood stream. By taking just a quarter teaspoons worth of black pepper, you see curcumin (turmeric root) levels skyrocket. The same amount of curcumin consumed, but the bioavailability shoots up 2000%. Even just a little pinch of pepper1/20th of a teaspooncan significantly boost levels. -Michael Greger, M.D Not only can adding fresh ground pepper make turmeric more bioavailable but piperine in black pepper can trigger TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1) in the body. This triggering can reduce pain! Ok, so why the coconut oil? According to research: Another way to boost the absorption of curcumin is to consume it in the whole food, turmeric root (fresh or dried as a powder) because natural oils found in turmeric root and turmeric powder can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin seven to eight fold. When eaten with fat, curcumin can be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system thereby in part bypassing the liver. You can use good clean organic fats like olive oil, fish oil or, my favorite, coconut oil! For more on coconut oil - https://www.facebook.com//a.24977628509/1017239048350977/ THE RECIPE First source the following ingredients - - cup of organic turmeric root powder - 1 cup of clean spring or filtered water (may need more) - up to 1 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper (fresh is always best because of the piperine levels) - cup organic cold pressed virgin coconut oil (you can also use olive oil) Heres how easy it is: just mix the turmeric root powder with the 1 cup of water in a pan or pot, you may need to add more water if needed. Stir the mixture on medium/low heat and in about 7 to 10 minutes, it should form a thick paste. (If your paste looks runny, just add a bit more turmeric and heat it for another couple of minutes.) Once turned into a paste, add the fresh cracked pepper and coconut oil, and then stir it up! Once cool, place the paste in a mason jar and store it in your fridge. The paste should last for about 2 weeks. Start with about to tsp, depending on the size of your dog. You can increase the amount from there, up to about a Tbsp for larger dogs. Cats - start with 1/8 of a teaspoon of turmeric paste and build up over time if needed. Humans - start with 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric paste 3 times a day and then build up to desired level. *NOTE: Follow dosage in the writeup and not the photo. For more on turmeric https://www.facebook.com//a.249776285097/741791359229082/ If there was ever a time to start a preventative plan, like adding turmeric root to your pets diet, the time is now! 11.01.2022 With the Corona virus panic buying many shops are limiting people to only 20 cans of cat food per person. When we feed 14 cans between 2 colonies on a nightly ...basis this poses somewhat of a problem. This is when we are relying on donations from the public more than ever! We have donation bins located outside Coles in Hillarys at the Flinders Ave shopping centre, Pet Stock Brighton and Better Pets and Gardens in Malaga. Our colony kitties would very much appreciate our supporters keeping their bellies full with donations of tinned and dry food

11.01.2022 Dogs who wear muzzles are good dogs. Dogs who arent dog friendly are good dogs. Dogs who are leash reactive are good dogs. ... Dogs who need space are good dogs. Dogs who are scared of strangers are good dogs. If you see someone clearly making steps to avoid you or your dog while out walking, please respect them. If someone lets you know that their dog needs space or isnt dog friendly, please respect them. If you see someone clip their dog on lead when you approach, clip yours on too and keep away. Some dogs dont want to interact with other dogs or people and thats fine. Im sure you dont want to interact with everyone you see either . They still deserve to have a great quality of life and go everywhere yours gets to go as long as they are taking the right precautions. Having a dog that needs space is a challenge all of its own, but we are doing our best to advocate for them to insure they live the best lives we can give them. Training cant happen at all unless we take these dogs into public places. To everyone with friendly dogs, please dont be offended and please dont judge. A nervous dog can happen to anyone at any time. Instead of playing the blame game, lets all try make that dogs life more comfortable and its owners life much easier by being understanding Picture credit : whole dog journal

02.01.2022 Thank you to all our wonderful supporters for your generosity in donating some amazing pre-loved goods, books, etc for our upcoming Wet Nose Day (WND) happe...ning this Sunday 10am to 3pm. We have got some incredible items which has kept our WND volunteers very busy sorting and pricing it all. We now have enough stock for WND and we cannot take any more due to lack of storage and ability to get it sorted and priced in time. However, we do still require plants and baked goods (with all ingredients listed to satisfy health and safety requirements). Once again, we are thankful we have so many supporters who are willing to get behind us See more

01.01.2022 As most of you know, Moose is a friendly dog that loves almost anyone. But he can sometimes have some attitude. I found this post about the yellow dog project ...and loved the idea. Moose now has a yellow ribbon tied on his leash to warn the public to give him space. The only problem with this is not many people know about the project, please share the project with your friends and family to help Moose and I when we are out in public. See more
