20.01.2022 Pigeons are pretty familiar to most of us. But I bet not many of you are familiar with this little beauty. This is a baby Torres Strait Island Pigeon! It this photo, we can see a little sparrow sharing a cosy nest with the Torres Strait Island Pigeon. And, you guessed it, it’s an Animal Rescue Cooperative Craft Guild nest! ... Heather Owen, a member of the Craft Guild in Cairns, Far North Queensland is caring for this little one . Heather said: We really do appreciate all the crafts that we have been so lucky to receive but I think our animals appreciate it more. This Torres Strait Island Pigeon fell out of its nest when it was only really tiny. I have had it in care for a few weeks. The little sparrow is being cared for by a friend of mine who is babysitting my torrie this weekend. This is a picture of the torrie when she first came into care. The Torres Strait Islands are a group of at least 274 small islands in Torres Strait, the waterway separating far northern continental Australia's Cape York Peninsula and the island of New Guinea. They span an area of 48,000 km, but their total land area is 566 km The Torres Strait Island Pigeon which is also known as the Pied Imperial-Pigeon is a large distinctive black and white pigeon, mostly white but with black on the outerparts of its wings and on its tail tip and black bars on the underside of its tail. The beak is yellow or yellow-green and legs and feet are blue-grey. This bird is also known as the Torresian Imperial Pigeon, Torres Strait Pigeon, White Nutmeg-Pigeon, Nutmeg Pigeon, Spice Pigeon, or Australian Pied Imperial-Pigeon. The population is now slowly increasing because of their protected status in Australia, and the efforts of carers like Heather, and there are now an estimated 30,000 birds. However, the birds were subject to mass slaughter in the 19th and early 20th Centuries because they were thought of as pests or easy targets for recreational shooting. Thank you for sharing this lovely photo of one of our lesser known species, Heather, and letting us learn a little more about them. And of course, thank you to all of our Craft Guild members who give their time and talent to make items to help the animals, and thank you to the Craft Hub team for organising and getting the craft sent out #AnimalRescueCraftGuild #ARCG #MiniKittyCommune #MKC #AnimalRescueCooperative #ARC #WIRES WIRES

19.01.2022 Hunter region is so important to animals. Wildlife in the area benefit from a stable rescue community who is well supported. This massive load of medical, trail cameras and wombaroo was redistributed from the local team and out to FAWNA in Hunter region, FAWNA and ARC have been working together well before the fires and have been through many rescues together with more to come. You can visit them here - https://www.fawna.org.au/... FAWNA, NSW Inc (which stands for: For Australian Wildlife Needing Aid) is the only group licensed for all species in its 18,000 sq km area which ranges south from Bulahdelah to the northern part of the Kempsey Shire and west to Stroud and Gloucester. FAWNA works closely with Koala Preservation Society and Koalas in Care and points out that WIRES is not licensed to work on this part of the mid north coast the closest WIRES branches being on the Central Coast, and the mid north coast branch based from Coffs Harbour operates only down to Nambucca. In the last financial year FAWNA’S volunteers handled over 3000 animals, birds and reptiles that were called in by caring members of the public to the 24 hour 7 day a week person-answered wildlife rescue hotline 6581 4141. Some were delivered to the region’s caring veterinary clinics and passed to FAWNA for ongoing care before release. If you are a Wildlife carer needing help, we will do our best. We dont always have everything and we dont have vast bank accounts, but we spend what we do get fast on rescuers in need. 15.01.2022 Today’s ARC Companion Animal Rescue Program features: Crossroads Dingo Rescue! ARC COMPANION ANIMAL RESCUE PROGRAM IN ACTION... The dingo is an ancient breed , neither dog nor wolf , he is independent head strong and wilful . The dingo obeys no one, he is ruled by instincts. Crossroads Dingo Rescue is a wonderful animal rescue in Western Australia who ARC have had the pleasure of supplying companion animal food to recently. This is food supplies from MKC, ARC and #Petbarnfoundation getting to where it is needed. Here is Ann from CDR: A massive thank you and much appreciation ARC PET BARN FOUNDATION for the vet supplies and dry dog food . Located in Western Australia, CROSSROADS DINGO RESCUE has a simple aim to educate, re-establish, sterilize, microchip, and rehome domestic dingoes where possible. While rehoming these loveable characters would be the preferred outcome for all our residents, our priority remains to rescue and care for the rejected and the mistreated. We would also like to educate the public with a better understanding that Dingoes are not Dogs. Even when crossbred with domestic breeds, they will always differ mentally and physically. 12.01.2022 "Whats that Skip? Sonny fell down a well!" Everyone remembers Skippy the bush Kangaroo! Well he just got some deliveries! Kangaroo Pellets from Hunter off to the home of Skippy (Sydney Wildlife), WIRES North Coast and Aussie ARK in Gosford Earlier in the year ARC purchased large quantities of Kangaroo Pellets (it was around 80+ tonne) as a lot of rescuers needed them and many could not sustain local populations. Vendors were short of the essential supply material so we made ...bulk orders to help secure stock. These were funded by donors all over the world who were worried about the plight of Australia's Wildlife and wanted to see they were being fed. In a huge operation, ARC team members distributed these all over Australia including East Gippsland, Hunter, North Coast, Brisbane, South Coast and Inland centres such as Warrumbungle and Coona. Recently one of the hubs let us know they had 3 pallets at the shed, so we immediately put them to good use, that's about a tonne of Pellets out of storage and into the field with animals that need them. Stock turn is something we do very often as the goal of a hub is to transfer supplies to rescuers. The first drop was amazing, with the help of a wonderful transporter (who hadnt seen a Kangaroo until that day) to Orangeville and Sydney Wildlife, the home of Skippy. They were so happy to see supplies come in and the transporters even send pictures of the Animals they saw. 3 days later we split the next 2 Pallets over to Aussie Ark (Reptile Park), a significant conservation and rescue org in the Hunter Area that uses pellets and domestic food in high quantity to support Kangaroo and other animals at the centre (we had a long discussion about keeping birds away from them .. but that is for another day) and to WIRES branches in the North Coast region. Not all Kangaroo's eat these pellet types so we supplemented with Cool Shine and other products. To donate to the ARC and help our work visit www.arcsupport.org.au/donate As you can see it's real and it's constant, these are large national volunteer teams getting things done. If you are a Wildlife carer needing help, we will do our best. We dont always have everything and we dont have vast bank accounts, but we spend what we do get fast on rescuers in need. 10.01.2022 Today’s ARC Companion Animal Rescue Program features: Australian Animal Rescue Inc! ARC COMPANION ANIMAL RESCUE PROGRAM IN ACTION... Tragedy should be utilised as a source of strength.' No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope, that's our real disaster. Australian Animal Rescue is a wonderful animal rescue in Victoria who ARC have had the pleasure of supplying companion animal food to recently. This is food supplies from ARC, Petbarn and #Petbarnfoundation getting to where it is needed. Here is Jax from AAR: Australian Animal Rescue Incorporated (AAR) is a non-profit, volunteer run, non government organization. AAR was established in April 2009 after bush fires devastated the Gippsland, Kinglake and Marysville areas of Victoria. Spurred into action by the devastating events that were unfolding, a small group of dedicated volunteers spent 3 months rescuing wildlife and providing as much food and supplies as possible out to the effected people and animals. We at AAR differ from other rescue groups as we also specialize, not only in wildlife animals but also domestic animal rescues and adoptions. Australian Animal Rescue Incorporated operates 7 days a week and provides animal rescue and information services throughout Victoria. We also provide assistance to other shelters and disaster relief by doing fundraising or sourcing supplies. 09.01.2022 Today’s ARC Companion Animal Rescue Program features: POUND Rescue! ARC COMPANION ANIMAL RESCUE PROGRAM IN ACTION... Why does watching a dog be a dog fill one with happiness? Pound Rescue is a wonderful animal rescue who ARC have had the pleasure of supplying companion animal food to recently. This is food supplies from ARC, Petbarn and #Petbarnfoundation getting to where it is needed. Here is Debra from Pound Rescue: We rescue the urgent animals, that is, the animals that are at imminent risk of being killed not because there is anything wrong with them but because the pound is ‘full’ or they have overstayed their welcome; or because they are distressed and not coping in the pound environment; or because they are deemed too young or too old or too unwell or are judged to be the ‘wrong’ breed; or because they are just inconvenient. We are the rescue of last resort for many of these animals. All our rescued animals are placed in foster care where they are loved, cared for and kept safe until they find their forever home. They are microchipped, desexed, vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms. All necessary veterinary care is provided where an animal is sick or has an injury. If required we engage animal behaviourists and other experts to assist with training or rehabilitation. 07.01.2022 Regional NSW Pound and Rescuer run. We get to meet the nicest people doing this, and a couple of weeks ago a wonderful lady called Allira came to the sheds for outreach pickup. She told us all about the work she was doing giving food to the pounds out in the regions, so we stacked up her car with a crazy amount of "everything" and hoped the suspension would hold. That got us thinking. "What if we could drop a shedload into the region and work with Allira and Lucille to get ...this stuff to the pounds" Boom, along came #Petbarnfoundation and #RoyalCanin with this massive load of food and we took the opportunity straight away to get this out there. This huge load of donated food (Dogs this time!) was just dropped on a truck up to Lithgow ARC (yes, a new one!) and is now being prepped for regional pound runs. If you are a rescuer between Lithgow and Dubbo and you need food, drop us a request here www.arcsupport.org.au/companion Thank you again to Lucille and Allira for being so dedicated to Animals and to our friends at #Petbarnfoundation , VJ the truck driver and all the team involved.
