Thanks to all those earlybirds who have already made purchases last night. The Artfair officially opens at 10am today. Congratulations to the 69 participating art centres for all your wonderful work. Tammy Lalara is an important artist at the art centre who makes amazing baskets, earrings, bush dyed textiles and many other things. It’s easy to spot a Tammy basket! Tammy doesn’t speak or hear so this b...iography was interpreted by Bernadette Watt, Tammy’s friend. Ghost net weaving on Groote Eylandt includes the creation of baskets, jewellery and sculptures by Anindilyakwa women in continuously changing ways, incorporating re-purposed textiles, bush dyed cotton and silks, occasionally even the artist’s skirt! Recent developments include the use of recycled jeans from thrift shops and salvaged sari silk from ‘The Stitching Project ‘, a women’s social enterprise in India. 22.01.2022 Maicie Lalara is featured with her sculpture ‘Yikwa- Monsterfish’ This work features in the touring @artback_ exhibition, ‘Groundswell’ along with works by 20 other NT artists . ‘Yilkwa- Monsterfish ‘ is made from ghost nets and ocean rubbish collected by the @anindilyakwarangers on Groote Eylandt . Groundswell , involves creative responses to Water In regards to access, contamination, scarcity and culture. 15.01.2022 Angurugu School visited the Angurugu Art centre today, Annabel Amagula and Sharna Wurramara showed the Students how to look for colour and how to dye fabric and andanas using natural colours from Country. We lit a fire and made big pots of colour. 07.01.2022 Annabell Amagula’s Story: Angurugu, Umbakumba and Milyakbura Art centre Ladies went to Buku for 4 Days on a Culture Trip We went to Visit the Buku Art Centre, Ishmel was telling us stories about our history and talked about the old ways.... We went into the Media room and each of us had a go with the Virtual Reality, it was fun to see the dancing fish and the inside of the tree. we went out on country with the Ladies, with felicity and her daughter collecting red and yellow colour. It was really lovely to meet the older ladies , they gave us inspiration and encouraged us. We went for a long drive in the sand to BAWAKA it was a long day, beautiful country, Rita in Bawaka was showing the ladies different way to weave a mat. We shared stories of our country, We made Yellow and Red colour and made a fire to boil the Pandanas in, we then washed them in the sea. Bawaka gave us a send off song and a prayer for a safe journey home.
