22.01.2022 Pictured is a Ghost Net basket by Tammy Lalalra, woven from ghost nets retrieved from the seas on Groote Eylandt by the @anindilyakwarangers . You will find Tammy's new works on the Anindilyakwa Arts Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Digital Booth. Only two days to go!. Tammy Lalara is an important artist at the art centre who makes amazing baskets, earrings, bush dyed textiles and many other things. It’s easy to spot a Tammy basket! Tammy doesn’t speak or hear so this b...iography was interpreted by Bernadette Watt, Tammy’s friend. Ghost net weaving on Groote Eylandt includes the creation of baskets, jewellery and sculptures by Anindilyakwa women in continuously changing ways, incorporating re-purposed textiles, bush dyed cotton and silks, occasionally even the artist’s skirt! Recent developments include the use of recycled jeans from thrift shops and salvaged sari silk from ‘The Stitching Project ‘, a women’s social enterprise in India. Anindilyakwa artists have well and truly established their ghost net and plant dying weaving practices, with several artists receiving National recognition with their ghost net baskets in exhibitons and art prizes. #basket #daaf2020 #aboriginalart #aboriginalartist #firstnationsart #firstnationswomen #basketryart #fibreart #fiberartist #fiberartistsofinstagram @ Anindilyakwa Arts, Groote Eylandt

03.01.2022 Introducing Annabel Amagula, one of the talented artists whose work you will find in the Anindilyakwa Arts booth at the Digital Darwin Aboriginal Artfair, launching August 6. I grew up in Angurugu, I grew up with my father and mother, when I was 6 years old I would sit and watch my grandmother make bush bags from pandanas. When I was 10 I started making baskets. When I was 12 my great great grandmother would take us out to collect the colours for pandanas, tha...t’s how I learned, from my elders. When we are at the art fair (DAAF) and I see everyone going crazy for our bush dye , I feel happy and proud. It comes from our country, I like wearing it and it’s good they like wearing it too . I remember my grandmother, one day she made a bag, she used to go out hunting for yam and bush tuckers, she used to carry them in that bag. That bag was made old ways from pandanas strings, my bag is made from that ghost net, those nets kill our bush tucker, our turtles and fish and crab, the rangers go around and pick up the net and give it to us .This bag carry’s that story ' Annabel’s innovation and skill has contributed to Anindilyakwa Arts nomination as finalists in the National Indigenous Fashion Awards, in the environmental and social contribution category, where winners will be announced on Wednesday August 5 . Can’t wait! #aboriginalart #aboriginalartist #firstnationsart #firstnationspeople #firstnationsfashion #fiberart #fiberartist #fibreart #fibreartistsofinstagram #australianartists #australianbasketry #grooteeylandt See more

03.01.2022 Posted @withregram @indigenousfashionprojects Meet Anindilyakwa Arts, one of the nominees for this year’s Environmental and Social Contribution Award at the NIFA! Since 2015 women artists from @anindilyakwa_arts, an Aboriginal owned business on Groote Eylandt, have established a successful 'Bush Dye’ business, using their traditional basket making and plant dye knowledge in new ways. Artist Annabel Amagula says When we bush dye, the colours come from the old ways. We use ...that rusty stuff from community, from the dump, to make the patterns. We use leaves too. The Anindilyakwa Arts 2020 collection, titled Women's Work, has embraced sustainable practices even more than before, with the artists repurposing local miners' work shirts. Join us as we celebrate the talent of Australia’s leading First Nations designers and artists at the inaugural National Indigenous Fashion Awards (aka NIFA), broadcast LIVE on @nitv_au on the 5th August 2020! Head to the NIFA blog (link in bio) for a read and be sure to follow @anindilyakwa_arts Anindilyakawa Arts, Annabel Amagula in her Digital printed and Bush dye dress, and recycled workshirt hi-vis woven hand bag.
