25.01.2022 The ALC Rangers found this sea snake stranded on South Point Beach on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory this week. We think it’s an Elegant Sea Snake- and would be happy to hear from the expertsss.. ;) Ranger Christinale Lalara carefully guided it back to the water, where it swam away strongly so will hopefully be ok. 23.01.2022 The rangers are now trialing the use of Felixer devices on Groote Eylandt! These are devices that could play an important role in controlling feral cats, particularly in key habitats for threatened species such as the Northern Hopping Mouse and Brush-tailed Rabbit-rat. These and many other native fauna species have declined drastically on the mainland, largely due to cat predation, but are still relatively abundant on Groote. We want to keep it that way! Felixers can distingu...ish cats from other species, and shoot gel laced with poison onto their fur when they walk past. The cats then later ingest this when grooming. For the time being though, we are trialing the Felixers in ‘photo only’ mode, to make sure they won’t impact non-target species such as dingoes. A big thank you to John Read from Thylation for coming out to train the rangers in their use, and for stakeholders on Groote Eylandt for their support. 14.01.2022 Ghost Net Success! Last week the Rangers and crew from Bruce Wildcard Davey successfully removed a huge ghost net from the waters of Groote Eylandt. The 2.5 tonne foreign fishing net was safely removed from the water near Umbakumba, after being towed there by Wildcard. We rescued two tawny sharks from the net and undertook aquatic biosecurity monitoring to check for invasive marine species that threaten the tropical waters of Northern Australia. ... Ghost nets such as this one represent a huge risk to our marine environment, and unfortunately today we have received a report of another large ghost net found floating off the east coast of Groote Archipelago! 10.01.2022 Be Crocwise Dingarrbiya (saltwater crocodiles) inhabit all coastal and freshwater waterways around Groote Eylandt. Being crocwise in country is important as crocodile attacks can cause serious injury or death. Follow these simple rules to stay safe in croc country. - Stay out of the water and at least 5m back from the water’s edge at all times ... - Camp at least 50m away from the water’s edge - Dispose of food scraps and fish frames responsibly, as these will attract crocodiles - Stay alert when launching and retrieving boats and never dangle your arms or legs over the side - Always keep children and dogs away from the edge of the water - Crocodiles are opportunistic, ambush attack predators, if in doubt, don’t take the risk See more
