21.01.2022 How easy it is to get caught up in our current situations. Whether happy, exciting, sad, frustrating, stressful or overwhelming, it is too easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Every experience is temporary - allow this to bring you comfort in difficult times, and encourage you to be present in good ones. #annakpsych #happiness #mindfulness
15.01.2022 We live in a culture where self-medication is common-place and very much normalised. To manage our stress, depression, pain and anxiety, we eat poorly, drink, smoke, engage in unhealthy relationships or use recreational drugs. Even things like playing video games or binge-watching a TV series can provide us with a sense of relief. Whilst these strategies may provide some short-term comfort, they often only distract us ever-so-briefly and ultimately cause more harm than good.... Specifically, we can become detached from our emotions, disconnected from the people around us, sleep can be compromised, and problems remain unaddressed. Take some time to think about what your ‘go-to’ is when you’re not feeling great (I can think of a few of mine... Netflix and chocolate are the top 2!). Next time you reach for your ‘medication’, take a moment to adopt a more mindful approach - notice how you are feeling and consider a healthier option such as breathing, meditation, calling a friend, hugging someone, or writing down your positive experiences from the day. #annakpsych #selfcare #happiness
14.01.2022 I recently had someone refer to me as smart and immediately the negative self talk kicked in - right on schedule. In fact, I found myself ruminating over this often throughout the week that followed. Why does this person think that I’m smart?... How have I managed to fool them into thinking that I’m an intelligent person?... Soon enough they going to find out that they have it wrong! ... Maybe I should let them know that I’m not smart so that they don’t find this out on th...eir own... I really need to read more, study more... - I even went through a list in my head of former colleagues who likely thought I was an idiot and probably still do. Honestly... . The theme here is I suck and I’m not good enough. Who can relate??? Often when evaluating negative self talk, we get to the core belief that underpins it all. Not surprisingly, I’m not good enough is a common one! This belief is - unhelpful, upsetting, unnecessary and... untrue! So why do we keep beating ourselves up? One thing I have learnt on my journey is that sometimes we all slip into negative thinking patterns. Expect it to happen, and be prepared with strategies to swiftly let it go (you all know my favourite balloon exercise to use for things like this). Treat yourself with the compassion you deserve. You’re amazing just as you are! #annakpsych #happiness #selfcompassion
09.01.2022 I have been thinking deeply about what I can do to contribute to change in our society. In my adult life I have made a conscious effort to un-learn the things that I have been programmed from childhood to see as acceptable. When I hear a racist, ableist, sexist, fat-phobic or homophobic remark I usually use humour to express my disagreement, or don’t say anything at all. Confrontation makes me uncomfortable (due to my own underlying need to be liked) but my silence is so...mething that I can see has made me complicit at times. So what can I, personally, do? I can continue to reflect on my own behaviour, and more directly challenge others who cross the line. I hope you all can join me on my lifelong quest to be better. What have the recent events taught you about yourself, and what do you vow to do differently? #annakpsych #change #growth
09.01.2022 To all of the students doing their HSC exams at the moment - Whatever the outcome, there will always be a way to get to where you want to be. Hard work and dedication are MORE IMPORTANT than a high ATAR. Don’t forget it! Talk about your feelings, reach out if you need help. You’re not alone. #annakpsych #hsc #stress
02.01.2022 Sometimes when things are hard, all we want to do is stay away. Sure, ‘avoidance’ can be an effective strategy for coping in certain situations. But we know, in many cases, it is not the most beneficial to us in the long run. Not surprisingly, most of us are quite effective at avoiding things. We avoid going to certain places or seeing people, and also avoid dealing with our thoughts or feelings through watching TV, or immersing ourselves in social media, books and even ...vigorous exercise. A critical act of self-care is to protect yourself from things that are detrimental to your mental health, and recognise when you have reached your limit and need some ‘time out’. However, make sure you take the time to ensure your behaviour isn’t holding you back from confronting a fear or addressing an issue. Before you ‘jump in’ to your next task - take a moment to sit with your feelings and ask yourself - are you avoiding something? Why? What are you going to do about it? #annakpsych #happiness
02.01.2022 To my fellow people-pleasers, Something I’ve been conscious of, and working on for YEARS is my need to be liked. Through my work I have learnt that I am not the only one who struggles with this affliction. This influences my life in many ways, primarily resulting in an inability to say no (usually leading me to say yes and then become resentful, because other people should naturally know I’m already stretched to capacity! ), and ruminating about someone not liking me (how da...re they!!). These tendencies have not led to anything good. Stress, anxiety, sleepless nights... so here is a reminder for myself, and the rest of you. Stop trying to please everyone! #annakpsych
