23.01.2022 PREGNANCY AND THE HORMONE RELAXIN In females, relaxin in a hormone that is produced in both pregnant and nonpregnant females, but levels are much higher in pregnancy. During pregnancy, relaxin levels are at their highest in the FIRST trimester and then again at delivery. ... Relaxin has multiple roles including promoting the implantation of the developing fetus into the wall of the uterus and growth of the placenta, inhibiting uterine contractions in early pregnancy, and regulating the cardiovascular and renal systems of the mother to help them adapt to the increase in demand of oxygen and nutrients for the fetus. Towards the end of pregnancy relaxin promotes the rupture of the membranes around the fetus. Relaxin also softens the structures of the musculoskeletal system, especially around the pelvis to aid in the delivery of the baby. Consequently, in pregnant females all ligaments, tendons and muscles are more flexible. This means care must be taken to prevent over stretching or overloading weight bearing joints (even in early pregnancy). Pilates is a fantastic form of exercise to support the body during pregnancy but must be adapted and modified to care for the pregnant body. 18.01.2022 Ladder rungs, back board, over head bar, springs, sling - this is the new Fuse Ladder. The Fuse Ladder combines spring resistance exercises with climbing, hanging, agility, and balancing challenges. It’s fun, challenging and offers soo many options. ... It’s actually pretty cool!

17.01.2022 I love cycling! However, the cycling position can cause lower back pain, tight hip flexors and forward rolled shoulders. In fact, the lower back is often the first area to fatigue on a long ride. Pilates is an excellent way for cyclists to acquire more core strength which helps support the lower back as well as allowing more power to be transferred to the pedals resulting in a more efficient and smoother ride. Pilates can correct any muscle imbalances that may occur as a re...sult of working certain muscles harder than others. Pilates can also help to restore good posture by opening the chest and strengthening the back muscles, counteracting the rounded spinal position on the bike. 16.01.2022 Fascia is our internal connective tissue that wraps around our organs and provides the framework for our body. "The fascial system is like a flock of birds flying together without a predetermined logic and maintaining their individuality at the same time." Bordoni et al. The indeterminable resilience of the fascial system. J Integr Med. 2017 Sep;15(5):337-343.

13.01.2022 Sciatica refers to pain anywhere along the length of the sciatic nerve which runs from the lowest lumbar joints, through the buttocks, behind the hip joints, down the back of the thigh, front and side of the shin and finally to the foot and toes (see picture). Irritation of this nerve can be from variety of causes including a bulged disc, arthritic bone, thickened ligaments, or injured joint capsules. The key to successful treatment is to remove the cause. ... Stretching the sciatic nerve will make it more sensitive so hamstrings stretches often causes more harm than good. Instead, the nerve should be gently moved or 'flossed' to reduce irritation and pain sensitivity. The object of flossing is to pull the nerve from one end while releasing at the other, then the reversing the process. 13.01.2022 One of the new additions to the study: The CoreAlign was developed by physical therapist, Jonathan Hoffman. It consists of a frame enclosing two tracks and carts, which move independently with smooth resistance created by six elastic resistance tube assemblies on each cart. The CoreAlign emphasises an upright posture and is designed to improve posture, balance and functional movement. CoreAlign exercises facilitate musculoskeletal rehabilitation by stimulating core stabili...ty muscles to fire in perfect timing while performing challenging exercises, very deep stretches and core-controlled aerobic training. Fun, fun, fun!

12.01.2022 We often surprise ourselves with our own capabilities. This applies in many aspects of life including in the Pilates studio! Seeing the smile and sense of achievement on the face of someone perform a movement they thought was impossible is absolutely wonderful Believe in yourself

11.01.2022 Today marks the start of Dementia Action Week. Dementia is not one specific disease but a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks. ... At present there is no prevention or cure for most forms of dementia, and dementia research is directed at understanding lifestyle factors that can act as preventive strategies. Many studies have shown that regular physical activity has positive effects on health in general and brain health in particular and has the potential to reduce the risk of dementia. Scientists are propose that in order to get the greatest benefit from exercise, individuals should not follow a 'one size fits all' approach. Instead, exercises should be tailored to each individual in order to maximize the potential neuroplastic and preventive effects of regular exercise. Pilates builds awareness of the body but also helps improve mind-body connection. It can also be adapted to the objectives and needs of each individual. Pilates can therefore be a wonderful form of exercise for overall and specifically brain health.

09.01.2022 Exercise is good for you. And it's especially good for you if you have Parkinson's."

09.01.2022 Exercise is known to be one of the most effective treatments for chronic lower back pain but what type of exercise is best? YES you guessed it - Pilates came top of the list!

09.01.2022 Soo lovely to be back open. These happy sunflowers from a lovely client definitely reflect the mood in the studio today

07.01.2022 Walking is one of the most fundamental activities inherent in our daily living. Brisk walking, with the correct walking posture, can unload the spine and alleviate back pain. Combine it with being in nature and you have the perfect tonic to increase positivity and calmness, and make us feel more ALIVE!

07.01.2022 An interesting study showing that bones are more that a place to store calcium! The findings of the study suggest osteocalcin ( a protein secreted by bones) determines when bodies shift into fight-or-flight mode, not adrenaline as was traditionally thought. The study supports the hypothesis that bones evolved to help animals escape predators and other threats.

04.01.2022 The two most important components in the treatment of osteoporosis are:1) maximise bone strength, 2) minimise falls. Exercise has been shown to have an extremely important role in both increasing bone strength and reducing falls. Exercise to increase bone density needs to be weight bearing, impact loading and of high resistance. Balance training also needs to be incorporated to minimise falls. ... Equipment Pilates incorporates weight bearing and impact loading exercises which can help increase bone density as well as increasing muscle strength and improving balance. Osteoporosis is a silent disease and often undiagnosed until a fracture occurs. It is therefore important to incorporate appropriate exercise as a fracture prevention strategy before peak bone mass occurs and continue throughout life. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or low bone density I can design a safe and targeted Pilates program for you to help prevent further bone loss and improve bone density, increase muscle strength, help correct any postural changes and improve balance and coordination. 01.01.2022 'Exercise seems to be good for practically every function in the brain and body'. WHY? When you exercise your muscles, fat cells, and liver release a variety of molecules into the bloodstream. Some of these molecules circulate through the body and travel up to the brain, where they cross the blood-brain barrier. Once inside, they trigger a cascade of beneficial changes that can make you feel sharper and happier. One of these changes is the release of a growth hormone called b...rain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF is very important for all of the basic processes related to learning and memory in the brain. Exercise also changes the brain’s network of blood vessels, and elevates neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and endogenous opioids (also known as endorphins), which are critical for regulating mood, motivation, and feelings of reward. The best type of exercise is one that you enjoy and will do regularly :) https://elemental.medium.com/this-is-what-exercise-does-to-

01.01.2022 Injuries can affect us both physically and mentally. We are all aware of the physical affects from an injury, but the mental affects are often unexpected. This may be due to factors such as not being able to take part in the sport we enjoy and are identified with, not being able to carry out our normal activities, not knowing why we are in pain or how long recovery will take. With any injury it is important to pay attention to the mental effects as well as the physical effe...cts. My approach at ANNA PILATES is holistic, recognising both the physical and psychological aspects of movement. My aim is to provide a caring and supportive space where the needs of each individual are met.
