25.01.2022 For over 20 years the Australian Society of Miniature Art has held its National Awards Exhibition around this time every year. Last year it was cancelled because of COVID-19, and this year to everyone's relief went ahead - but is now closed a week early because of a new lockdown in Sydney. However, the opening night was held which is the highlight of the exhibition, albeit with limited numbers of visitors.... http://annawarren.net//29/miniature-assemblage-forget-me-/

24.01.2022 The desert is full of life, but often it is unseen - animals and reptiles hiding from noisy invaders, or simply keeping away from the cold of winter. Where there is no water, there are no animals. So, seeing life and plants flowering was a great joy when we did. This is part 3 of my record of our trip through the Australian desert, see http://annawarren.net/20//21/madigan-line-flora-and-fauna/

24.01.2022 Looking back through miniatures I have made over the years, I was surprised to find that a lot were portraits. Some of real people, others imaginary. For an upcoming miniatures exhibition I decided to submit two hand made books which I made previously, plus three new drawings. Both the books featured faces, all men. One book, called Rogues Gallery is a gallery of mug shots based on the faces of Sydney criminals from the early 1920s. [ 150 more words ] http://annawarren.net/2019/12/23/miniature-portraits-2/

23.01.2022 Over the last couple of months I have been involved in several different exhibitions - often they are neatly spread out throughout the year but not this time. The Annual Miniature Art Awards is held this time every year (except last year for the reasons we all know about) and is on now. My next post will probably show the work I have in that.... http://annawarren.net//print-exhibition-50-years-of-inky-/

23.01.2022 Collaborating with other artists has become a significant part of my practice over the last few years, and time becomes a major element in the progress of a collaboration. This book is one of a set of five in a project which began over two years ago. About a week ago I received my book back with the final pages completed, and it was like reuniting with an old friend. 22.01.2022 The letterbox collaboration has now added portraits to the mix and its been fun! We are keeping the starting marks very simple so there is room for interpretation in any number of ways. These are 10 x 10 cm, once again small enough to easily pop into a letterbox, and still using any available materials. This seems a good opportunity to tell more about my fellow collaborator. 22.01.2022 Floral imagery is more evident in this drawing than in the previous ones, but they all come from the same sort of beginnings - inspiration from a flower or plant. My choices are eclectic, they don't only come from one source, but all have their origins in photos I have taken. The photo generally provides nothing more than a hint of the form, in most cases that is where I diverge.... http://annawarren.net/2021/08/30/alien-botany/

22.01.2022 After a very quiet few months once the threat of Covid started to recede we decided it was time to hit the road and go camping. The whole of September was set aside for a wander to the furthest Northern and Western edges of New South Wales. At that stage the state borders remained closed, so it was a good opportunity to explore our home state.... http://annawarren.net//19/camping-across-nsw-photos-part-1/

21.01.2022 The basic principles of encaustic painting are simple - colour pigment dissolved in a hot wax and damar resin solution, which is then painted onto a support of some kind, usually board, as it is firm and withstands the heat and subsequent brutal treatment. A week ago I participated in a two-day workshop in encaustic painting at my local art centre.... http://annawarren.net/2021/01/26/encaustic-explorations/

19.01.2022 The letterbox collaboration has moved on another step - I collected Pat's starters along with the pieces I started and she had completed last week (see here for those and the background to how this began), and now I have finally completed hers and returned them to her with six new starters. Completing the pieces requires much more time and thought than starting, and sometimes I have to sit and think for a little while before I begin. 18.01.2022 Australian bush orchids can be found across the country, but are particularly prolific in Western Australia. There are areas that are transformed every year by the wildflowers that blossom in spring, some huge and showy, others tiny and hidden. Orchids are in this group, many are so tiny that unless you are looking for them you can walk right past and never know they are there. 18.01.2022 Over the last year I have been developing large coloured pencil drawings of semi-imaginary flowers. All are inspired by the wild flowers I draw or take photos of when I am travelling around Australia. Many are very tiny, such as the little native orchids of Western Australia, which can easily be missed unless you know what you are looking for. 17.01.2022 Last week I had the interesting - and very enjoyable - experience of being interviewed for a podcast. The interviewer was John Middick, who runs 'The Sharpened Artist' a podcast mainly for anyone interested in coloured pencil art, he also provides online classes in coloured pencil technique. His interest was initially in the letterbox collaborations I have been doing (see previous posts) but we quickly expanded into other areas of my art practice. 17.01.2022 The beginnings of this drawing lie in the camping trip I did last year to far western New South Wales, in particular Broken Hill. I took dozens of photos of the plants and flowers I found, as well as drawing as many as I could. When I started this drawing the inspiration was a sprawling shrub with dull green leaves and purple flowers, an unexciting photo, but the essence of it gave some of the structures that appeared in this drawing.... http://annawarren.net/2021/05/28/oracle/

15.01.2022 Life within narrow geographical confines has become the norm for all of us over the last six months or so, the further reaches of our country and the rest of the world have become the stuff of memory and imagination. Here in New South Wales the coronavirus is being carefully controlled, with the case numbers steadily dropping, so we decided this was a good time to pack up the camper trailer and head into the bush. 14.01.2022 The cloud forms that can be seen over inland areas of Australia are very different from those seen along the coast. I'm sure a geographer could tell me why, but my enjoyment simply comes from looking up, rather than knowing just why they are so different. There is a particular kind of fluffy, almost blob-like series of clouds that can be seen as you travel further west.... http://annawarren.net/2021/05/05/inland-skies/

12.01.2022 This week saw ruthless clearing out. Piles of prints were assessed, and any found wanting were ripped up and put into the recycling bin. Then there was a much smaller pile left, of prints that I like and could one day be framed (very few), of prints that I can use to draw into, and ones that can be made into three-dimensional objects. 12.01.2022 One drawing leads to another - this one followed on from 'In Flight' (see here for images and background). Once again using Liquid Pencil loosely and almost randomly applied as a base, on yupo paper, then the forms are worked into and developed using different kinds of pencils. One difficulty with this kind of work is photographing it accurately, looking back to 'In Flight' it looks quite clumsy, a lot of the fine detail and some delicate elements are just not visible in the photo. 10.01.2022 The collaboration project continues, and is almost at its culmination, an exhibition! Over the last few years Sue Rawlinson and I have been working together on a number of artworks - the major element being portraits, where one of us begins a portrait and the other finishes it. We now have over 70 of these. To see more about these click [ 264 more words ] http://annawarren.net//concertina-book-of-australian-land/

09.01.2022 For nearly four years I have been working in collaboration with another Australian artist, Sue Rawlinson, on small portraits and concertina books, with them passing between us at regular intervals for us each to add our contribution. We now have 70 portraits - 35 started by Sue and completed by me and 35 started by me and completed by Sue - and 6 concertina books, each with a theme. 08.01.2022 Continuing along the path I have been following over the last few months, I decided to go big with this drawing, 94 x 63 cm. The support I am using is not really paper as we normally know it, it is Yupo, a synthetic paper often used in commercial printing. It is a polypropylene, with a super smooth, almost shiny surface and is very different to work on from normal watercolour paper.... http://annawarren.net/2021/08/14/going-big-abstract-drawing/

08.01.2022 Decision making is a slow process - I began this set of drawings back in March, or it may have been earlier than that. The first step was applying random marks with Liquid Pencil, which is so often my go-to base medium, to the small (10 x 8 cm) paint swatch cards collected from my local hardware store. The only intention I had was that each panel should have individual integrity, but also connect to the ones next to it, and I wanted a flowing form, reminiscent of clouds, or ink floating in water, something that felt ephemeral. 05.01.2022 In April I was supposed to be exhibiting work as part of a group exhibition in Sydney. I would have missed the end as I was off to London and Spain, to spend time with my daughter and her family. Of course, none of these things happened. My overseas trip is on hold for the foreseeable future, but the exhibition has been re-scheduled for November, which is a great outcome. 04.01.2022 One of the most important things to do in these strange new times is maintaining - and intensifying - communications with friends and family. So, it seemed a good idea to set more collaborations in motion, with no particular aim except to keep the artistic brain engaged and keep in touch. I have three in motion, one very local, one in the US and one on the other side of Sydney, a concertina book which I will begin today. 02.01.2022 Continuing on from my previous two posts about camping in the furthest reaches of New South Wales. See here for my sketches and here for photos from the first half of the journey. The details of where we went are in the post with the sketches, so please go to that one to get a full overview. I left the last post in Dunlop Station, which once was an enormous sheep property on the Darling River.... http://annawarren.net//21/camping-across-nsw-photos-part-2/

01.01.2022 After almost six months the letterbox collaboration is coming to an end - or part of it. We have decided the set of long drawings is finished, but the portraits are continuing, and new projects have begun. Pat suggested a new collaboration which is based on the idea of a streetscape, in a concertina book. So, I made us two concertinas, each with 10 'pages', 10 cm square, and I drew a roofline along the full length of each, both different.
