25.01.2022 Last night we had our first Australian Citizenship Ceremony since the onset of COVID-19. Held in very different circumstances from usual because of government requirements, nearly 40 people from about 15 different countries, became new citizens and were formally welcomed to Burnside by James Stevens, Federal Member for Sturt and The Honourable David Pisoni, Minister and Member for Unley.
25.01.2022 This morning we officially opened The Shed in Conyngham St. This $3 million project turned an ugly industrial site into a multi-purpose community facility. A new Men’s Shed, that is also a Women’s Shed and a Shared shed, a biodiversity nursery where we will grow up to 10,000 indigenous plants for the area, a community garden for locals and an extension of the depot for materials storage. Thankyou to all concerned in the project and especially the Lions Club of Glenside who donated $80,000 to the project. It is great to see this site being a popular place to meet, chat and learn. Pictured with me below are Alan Hook from Lions and David Jones from the Mens’ Shed who spoke to the gathering.
24.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, so at 11am please remember with a minute’s silence all those who have given their lives in war, and those who continue to suffer the effects of war. The end of the war to end all wars World War 1, ended on this day on 11/11/18. We will remember them. Lest We Forget. Buy and wear a poppy for support.
23.01.2022 On Sunday afternoon I booked for a swim at George Bolton Swimming Centre. I have really missed this place and enjoyed swimming laps. It was good to see Hazel’s Cafe open again with many people enjoying the coffee and the social interaction.
23.01.2022 Are you coming along on Saturday? We are holding our first market at The Hub in L’Estrange St from 9am till 1pm. Organised by the Rotary Club of Burnside and the City of Burnside, it is the first of monthly markets on the third Saturday of each month. I hope to see you there!
21.01.2022 Today is RUOK Day. It is a day to remind us of the need to reach out to others who may be in need of a hand, need some reassurance, or need someone to talk to. Mental health is increasingly problematic and as a council and as friends we have responsibilities to be kind to others and find ways of helping them. So ask your friends, family and co-workers ‘Are you OK today?’
21.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon I attended the Adelaide Central School of Art Graduation Ceremony in the Glenside precinct. Passionate speeches about the importance of the Arts were provided by His Excellency the Governor of SA, the Honourable Hieu Van Le, who also presented the Graduation certificates, the newly appointed Art Gallery of SA Director, Rhana Devenport and the student Valedictorian, Inneke Taalman. Thank you to the CEO Penny Griggs for her very kind invitation.
20.01.2022 Today is the start of NAIDOC Week. The theme Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Council staff have positioned a display to promote NAIDOC week in the Cloisters and it will be there until December 3. The walls are decorated with basket weaving from a local Kaurna artist Lynette Crocker. I will post more about this display later this week.
19.01.2022 This morning I had breakfast with the Mayors of Campbelltown, Unley and Walkerville: Jill Whittaker, Michael Hewitson and Elizabeth Fricker. It is always good to catch up and share ideas at our monthly meetings. We are usually joined by the Mayor of Norwood, Payneham and St Peter’s, Robert Bria and The Mayor of Prospect, David O’Loughlin, but they were unable to join us today.
17.01.2022 On Saturday afternoon I watched our city’s two rugby teams Burnside and Old Collegians ‘battle it out’ in the sunshine at Tregenza Oval. I am really learning more about this game and really appreciate the value of such clubs in our community.
17.01.2022 At 11am today we gathered to remember the fallen at Kensington RSL and wreathes were laid, the Ode related, prayers delivered, the bugle played the Last Post and a piper played the bagpipes. Vickie Chapman lay a wreath on behalf of the State Govt and I lay one on behalf of the City of Burnside.
16.01.2022 The George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside will be open for business on Saturday 26 September!!! There are a number of significant changes to how coming for a s...wim will look when we reopen. Everyone will need to book online before coming to the Centre, as we now have a capacity on the Centre attendance numbers. Go to: https://bit.ly/SwimmingCentre2020 to book your session! The online booking portal can be accessed through the swimming Centre website above, and then is a step-by-step process. You will be able to book in for a 90 min lap swimming session or a 3 hr Recreation swim session, at set times throughout the day and also provide your information for contact tracing. Swimmers can arrive at anytime during the booked session time, however swimmers will need to exit the water 5 10 mins prior to the session ending to ensure you exit the Centre on time. We can’t wait to see you all
16.01.2022 This morning in Kensington Gardens Reserve we celebrated with the Kaurna people a smoking ceremony and a sod-turning to promote new beginnings in the Park. Wetland development, around 15,000 native plants, new tennis courts, a nature play space and areas and signage for reflection on the early indigenous history of the site. Burnside Council was presented with a shield from the Kaurna people as a token of goodwill and collaboration. My thanks to Allan Sumner for his opening ...words and Uncle Jeffrey (pictured below) and their friends for providing this ceremony, presenting the shield and sharing their skills with those present. Another joy was the singing by children from Kensington Gardens’ Kindy in the Park of songs in the Kaurna language. We were also able to thank James Stevens, Member for Sturt and David Pisoni representing local member for Bragg, Vickie Chapman for financial support from both levels of government. See more
16.01.2022 We sometimes forget what we owe these warriors!
16.01.2022 Our new Strategic Plan for 2020-2030 is now alive!
15.01.2022 This is a great opportunity to promote your service to our Burnside community. Deadline is very near!
15.01.2022 Keep smiling! Stay positive! Look after yourselves, your families and your neighbours. It is only for 6 days. You can walk to the shops for some exercise. You can exercise in your backyards or in your living room or on your verandah. You can visit vulnerable people and you can drive a family member to an essential service workplace. But wear a mask is the advice of the SA Police. Use your telephone to connect with each other and use your common sense. We want you to remain safe. We want SA back to ‘normal’ as soon as we can and especially with Christmas being so near. Previous generations have got through years of war and depression. We can survive 6 days.
15.01.2022 We have this unique area of environmental and historical significance in Burnside that needs protecting and enhancing. Thanks to Council staff and volunteers for all their land management works and additional signage in this place. FYI...These mines were the first metalliferous mines in Australia (Wheal Watkins and Wheal Gawler) and the signage helps to inform visitors of this early history and serve as reminders to help conserve the area. ‘Wheal’ is Cornish for ‘mine’.
15.01.2022 Now I am at the Kensington Gift. SA Athletic League are running an excellent event here at Kensington Oval. It takes me back to when this was the Olympic Sportsfield. Plenty of sunshine, shade, food, drinks and great runners over short and long distances. The track is magnificent. Well done grounds staff! The City of Burnside is a major sponsor through our Community Grants Programme and I presented the sashes for the Men’s and Women’s Kensington Gift winners.
14.01.2022 Today is World Teachers’ Day! Congratulations and thank you to all teachers who are having a particularly challenging year. Celebrate your achievements and realise the impact you have on every child and young person (or older person) you teach. You do make a difference!
14.01.2022 I had a delightful morning yesterday, visiting Year 3 girls at St Peter’s Girls. I contributed to their learning about history in general and Burnside history in particular, and met two girls whose mothers I taught at the school back in the 90’s.
14.01.2022 It was great to get out in the sunshine this week to record these highlights.
13.01.2022 On Saturday, our CEO, Chris Cowley and I attended the re-opening of Beaumont Bowling Club. The Honourable Vickie Chapman and James Stevens MP also admired the work that has been done over the past 5 years by the Club with the support of all three levels of government. Well done to President Leonie and all club members for their hard work raising funds themselves towards this project. The new facilities are outstanding. A great community hub!
12.01.2022 #CutenessOverload We had the absolute pleasure of teaming up with the Newland Park Kindergarten to capture some of their adorable kids having some fun on the #r...ideburnside pumptrack They have loved having the pumptrack at Newland Reserve, and will be making the most it before it moves to Miller Reserve in September. 12.01.2022 Right now there is an Environmental Fair on at The Hub. Great to see staff, EastWaste, KESAB, Koala Rescue, Rotary Club of Burnside, Animal Capers and entertainers engaging the children with music, face painting and craft making. Well done Jenna, Paul and Michelle! Next Saturday morning come to the Market at the Hub!
11.01.2022 My Mayor’s Christmas Card design competition is on now. If you attend a Primary School in Burnside and are in Years 2 and 3, you have until November 18th to submit your entry. It can be created in any medium (paint, crayon, ink, colour pencil, pencil, collage, photograph or computer graphic) based on the theme of an Australian Christmas. See City of Burnside website or Facebook page for entry details. I look forward to seeing all the designs and choosing the three winners. Prize of $100 book voucher for winner and family passes to Burnside Pool and The Regal for runners-up. Get creative this weekend!
10.01.2022 At last night’s Council meeting, the City of Burnside voted to provide financial support to the rebuilding of the Kensington Cricket Club and Burnside Rugby Clubrooms in Kensington Gardens, provided that funds could be obtained by State and Federal Governments to further the project. With this potential rebuild, more opportunities for other community activities, such as Strength for Life classes, could be accommodated in a much more fit for purpose facility for all.
08.01.2022 Vale Alan Brissenden. Alan was a long standing resident of Burnside who has been a magnificent scholar and supporter of the arts in South Australia and Australia. He has been an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow of the University of Adelaide for many years and in 1996 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to the Arts. Most of all he was an inspirational lecturer and tutor at Adelaide University in the English faculty and I was very fortunate to be one of his many students.
08.01.2022 I want to make sure that all of you who are working in health care are thanked for your continuing support and your stoic commitment to our community over the past 6 months. It is difficult, if not impossible, to reach out to everyone working in this field because of the breadth and diversity of service provision. Hence this post and important acknowledgement in ‘Burnside Highlights’. I have already written to the leaders of all schools and churches in Burnside to thank them for their unique contribution to the health, education and welfare of our community.
06.01.2022 I really endorse this means of communicating what is happening in Burnside! A great initiative!
04.01.2022 Get along to The Regal Theatre for movies this weekend. All sessions until November 25th are just $9.50 to celebrate her 95th birthday (she was born as the Princess Theatre in November 1925). Enjoy the restoration and especially the new seats!
03.01.2022 This morning I am attending the SA Branch of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association AGM at Payinthi, Prospect Council’s new building. We just heard a welcome from the Mayor of Prospect, David O’Loughlin and I am seated with the Mayors of Mt Barker, Ann Ferguson and West Torrens, Michael Coxon, as we work through the reports. The President, Cr Julie Woodman, Deputy Mayor of Salisbury, (pictured with David) reviewed the year’s activities.
02.01.2022 Last night I was kindly invited to attend the opening of the new Wolf Blass Community Centre at Norwood Oval. Built by benefactors, Kensington, Norwood, Payneham and St Peters Council, the State Government and particularly $1 million from Wolf Blass, the winemaker, it is truly state of the art facility and a credit to all involved with the vision being turned into reality. Are there any benefactors out there who would like to donate to help rebuild the Kensington Cricket Club and Burnside Rugby Club building?
