25.01.2022 Last week I visited the exhibition of the life and work of May Morris in the Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh. May was the daughter of William Morris and an artist in her own right, drawing, painting, designing wallpaper, textiles, clothes and jewelry. Her embroidered designs are stunning, with dense, detailed stitching, all the more remarkable considering it was carried out without electric lighting. I was glad to see this exhibition before it closed. The Dovecot Studio is a venue which holds many exhibitions, as well as housing the Tapestry workshop where you can see the weavers at work. Now of course we are all in lockdown, but it's more or less business as usual at Clever Stitches. Keep well!

20.01.2022 Now that restrictions are easing, I am happy to have people visit me for alterations and repairs. The best way to contact me is to text or call 07986237249. My ten year old granddaughter has been doing some sewing with me lately. She has quickly learned some new skills and is using the sewing machine to make a top for herself. I hope she will continue to enjoy the satisfaction which comes from making something unique. I love getting the chance to make clothes for children and recently enjoyed making a couple of outfits for a little friend who wanted an astronaut costume for dressing up but also likes wearing dresses, especially dresses with pockets!

20.01.2022 While we are all avoiding social contact as much as possible I am still happy to carry out repairs and simple adjustments on clothing. Contact details are on my Facebook Page Clever Stitches .

16.01.2022 Face Masks for carers. Many people in the community are caring for people in their homes, delivering shopping and carrying on with essential work which requires some social contact. Face masks may give them, and those they are in contact with, some protection against infection. The face masks I make are made from cotton and are washable. If you are in need, please contact me through [email protected]

15.01.2022 Getting ready for a new year with my new sewing machine. My last one was a work horse for 15 years, and although not broken it was definitely weary, so has now been retired for use by grandchildren. At this time of year it's good to have a clear out and you might have found some old favourites in the wardrobe which don't fit as well as they used to, or look a bit out of date. Before you pack them off to the charity shop remember they could be given a new lease of life with some alterations and updating!

11.01.2022 Summer is here and I'm enjoying my garden, but carrying on with sewing and alterations. I recently completed some dresses and shorts which were taken to Rwanda by a team from Balerno on behalf of Comfort International who provide support to community projects. A small contribution but it it's an enjoyable way of using up odd pieces of fabric.

11.01.2022 Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and peaceful Christmas, with the hope that normal service will return sometime in 2021!

06.01.2022 I have been sewing scrub gowns, tops and trousers, and laundry bags for safe washing of protective clothing, thanks to contacting an organiser with "For the Love of Scrubs Scotland". The scrubs have been given to local medical practices and to regions across the country, wherever there is a need for them. I'm still making face masks so if anyone wants some please get in touch. I only ask for a contribution towards costs, mainly because elastic is now in short supply! Although I can't carry out alterations which require fitting just now I can still do repairs like replacing zips and shortening hems, provided you can mark the length yourself! The best way to get in touch is to text me using the number on the Clever Stitches Facebook page. Best wishes to all who are staying home and staying safe. Anne

02.01.2022 By the end of the summer the garden had become a bit of a jungle. It is nine years old now and needed re-assessing. Shrubs had become trees, spreading plants were choking everything in their way and paths were overgrown. So the usual Autumn tidying up meant drastic cutting back, removing branches and digging out plants which have either out-grown their spaces or not earned their keep. I can now look forward to re-planting in the Spring. Indoors I've been busy with a wide rang...e of alterations and repairs - from delicate chiffon dresses to leather biker jackets. I'm always glad to do repairs as I don't like the throw-away attitude to clothes that comes with today's "fast fashion". I also enjoy upcycling clothes to give them a new lease of life. This waistcoat was made of a beautiful fabric but the design did nothing for the wearer. After taking it apart and re-stitching, it has a brand new look, figure flattering shape. See more
