25.01.2022 New work started yesterday, 60 x 180cm. I've been studying a heap of indigenous art in the last months. Although there are very many different styles, one aspect particularly caught my eye as relevant to my own art. I don't mean the stories, nor the dots, as those are exclusive to them in my opinion. I was looking at the way colour is overlaid with design, sometimes multiple layers (think the Pwerle sisters for example). And the most interesting to me were those paintings with multiple colours underneath, rather than others with just one flat colour, even when little of that is left exposed e.g. George Ward Tjungurrayi. So in this piece I laid down some varied colours instead of my normal single one, and have started the overlay. I hope that makes sense!

25.01.2022 Here's a little quintych called Linear Landscape, in a semi abstract style I find relaxing. Each oil on canvas is 46cm square, total length 2.3m, but could be extended indefinitely or split into two. I have hung it above the doors but would suit a hall perhaps as well. $600 for all or $300 for any 2. Commissions available.... Please pm me for more info. See more

24.01.2022 Very excited to be invigilator at the Regional Arts Award Decadence Exhibition, at the Judith Wright Arts Centre in the city today til 5pm. That just means I'm minding the exhibits, talking to the public, and getting a little work done at the same time! So I'm here all day, and back again next Thursday. The Exhibition leaves here after next Saturday, and travels to Texas, qld, then on to Charleville as part of its ongoing tour.

24.01.2022 Hi all, hope you are managing this challenging time. Once I realised my solo exhibition would not be going ahead in June I changed tack and have been rearranging my life including setting up a new studio space. I invite you here to view digitally, and if you would like to in person, you are welcome by appointment. Please message here or phone 0438.177337. Nearly all these paintings are for sale. Some of my work has been in quarantine but is returning this week so I can post ...more then. P.S. sorry for the abrupt end of video, I nearly dropped my phone! See more

24.01.2022 A favourite artist of mine is Richard Diebenkorn, a midcentury abstract expressionist who suddenly went figurative in the mid 1950s, then late 1960s changed again to geometric abstracts. Throughout though, you can see his eye for composition and balance.

24.01.2022 Early stages of my first work in 2 months. I haven't gone that long without painting before, it's been interesting! Trees are a good way to ease back in for me, very soothing.

24.01.2022 Just been notified that my work "Don't Cross the River (if you can't swim the tide)" has made Finalist in the Lethbridge 20000 Awards, 18 to 27 June. Normally in these things you just get a Yay or Nay, but in this case you have the added torture of scrolling through the list of Finalist works, hoping to find your own, but hopelessly comparing your work with diminishing confidence along the way, lol. Yes artists still get anxiety and angst :-) I give sincere congratulations to all the Finalists, including my friends Gabi Mika McNaughton, and Annica Malmkvist, well done! What an amazing collection of work, I hope you all check it out, at least online, when it goes public next month.

23.01.2022 A little definition added over the weekend, refining what was already there, a bit like seeing shapes in ink blots! Ignore the white: I think clouds would just overcomplicate things. It's really there just to delineate the skyline at present.

23.01.2022 "Wind From the Sea" 1947, Andrew Wyeth. His paintings have a combination of simplicity, emptiness, and muted colours, that I find very soothing. Others have described them quite differently though eg lonely, abandoned, silence, morose, and a poo palette. What do you think?

23.01.2022 Wow. If you are a creative, please listen to this interview on the process.

22.01.2022 An interesting time painting yesterday, and sorry I can't share much as yet as I don't want to ruin the surprise. First I shut down the sky which was distracting me, making the mountains jump out. I then moved away from the earth colours which looks a little odd at the moment but hopefully will make sense later. Now the exciting part: I found something I hadn't consciously painted with the acrylic, and suddenly a light came on and I realised what I was painting and even the ...title! That's going to be a bit confusing without pics, sorry, but it's the same as what happened with Wolf in the Sky and Fat Man Walking, if you remember those, except this one is integral to the painting. Oh and the name? Heimförin, which you can Google, or wait, as you please... See more

20.01.2022 Not getting much time atm, but some progress, in my mind anyway, with a little added zing and making that background colour work hard. 76 x 76cm

19.01.2022 This was going to be a bright vibrant piece, I could see it clearly in my mind. But the painting had other ideas, and I'm not sorry. Gentle, otherworld perhaps, but maybe that's what we need. Stay tuned, I don't know where I'm going now.

18.01.2022 A couple of months ago, I was painting some dark walls which horrified some who are used to the 'light is right' mantra. Anyway, I thought I would show how amazing dark can be, in displaying artworks. Here is one from my growing collection of aboriginal art: Pikillilyi Springs by Lola Nampitjinpa Brown. Now my entry just glows, so thrilled!

17.01.2022 Such a good explanation, please read. Not asking for a handout....

17.01.2022 "People think we are continually ascending a mountain to success or enlightenment; it's here, it's now, and this is it." Billy Childish, April 6 2020.

16.01.2022 Finished! "Don't Cross the River (If you can't swim the tide)" Oil on canvas 51 x 51cm

16.01.2022 Not sure what he's smoking...

15.01.2022 "Drink disinfectant? I don't think so!" painting is Helen of Troy by Frederick Sandys in 1867. He was an English pre-raphaelite artist. Glorious hair though, isn't it.

15.01.2022 Love the colour and composition here.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to all the winners in this year's Regional Arts Award. Thank you to all who voted for me for Peoples Choice Award; although I didn't win l am so appreciative you took the time to support me, thank you! I am fortunate though, that my work has been selected as one of 31 which will be in a touring exhibition of regional Queensland for 2021 and 2022. "Coming to a town near you..."

15.01.2022 Some small progress, enough for me to know where its going. Some paintings are clear in my mind from the beginning and others have to grow into their potential. This one is still growing.

14.01.2022 I'm not supposed to be painting today, but I have all this paint out on the palette going to waste, so what could I do ;-)

13.01.2022 Day 3, painting 3 Well they are small - this is detail on 30 x 30cm canvas

13.01.2022 Hi there. While the COVID-19 continues to disrupt all our lives, I'm letting you know of a few changes here. This year I have been working towards an exhibition in June, and the Samford Art Trails and classes, also in June. These are all now unlikely to go ahead so I have lost the opportunity of that potential income. As I am a Sole Trader like many in this field, there will be no government handout. I am also ineligible for Centrelink, and my backup income of housesitting ha...s been wiped while people cannot travel. My focus now has to be on putting food on the table so I have applied for casual work, along with 10,000 others, and have to scale back my art for the time being. If you have seen something here you like, or would like a commission done eg portrait or landscape, please contact me to discuss 0438.177337. I am happy to provide layby if that helps. Stay well and safe.

13.01.2022 Not happy with this yet, but I'm out of time for now. My job is ending and I head home tomorrow, so will let it sit and see what needs adjusting.

12.01.2022 While I am unable to paint, I'll find some weird and wonderful art to share here.

12.01.2022 An illustration next by Ivan Bilibin in 1899, for the Russian folktale "Vasilisa the Beautiful", a dark Cinderella type story. I love the Art Nouveau clothing (I would so like to wear that), and all over style.

12.01.2022 For those who remember my giant hand series, this is even bigger. He has a flip back thumb like me too..

11.01.2022 A very powerful work by a very talented artist, Hayley Roberts

10.01.2022 ok, now a couple of other "poo palette" paintings from the composition masters Egon Schiele and Lucien Freud, to show how important it is. I believe that used well good composition can make even beginner talent become striking paintings, and also exquisite technique will not save a painting with poor composition. If you do nothing else in your art, pay attention to your composition: learn the rules, then you will know when and how to break them!

09.01.2022 And that's how you do birds with a knife...

07.01.2022 Have you seen the pics of people recreating famous paintings with household items? This is one of the best.

07.01.2022 Oh what's this? A new abstract? Not really, lol, just been painting a bedroom to move my studio into this coming week, used up the paint on the roller in the hall, and then had to paint that room too! Conventional wisdom says white walls amplify light, true, but don't underestimate the power of a dark wall in making art zing. More of that later! In the meantime, goodbye to Light Cardboard in the bedroom and Pale Puke in the hall, colours that came with the house. I also have... 7 year itch with my chartreuse wall, it's been nice but our love affair is over and I'm moving on. Colour is fun! See more

06.01.2022 At last! A return to the easel. I'm playing hooky from my responsibilities today, but everyone needs a day off now and then, right? I have had severe withdrawal so plan to sate myself on colour and texture.

06.01.2022 Ready for action

06.01.2022 Finished this piece at last. I was experimenting with scraping the paint as thin as possible, and overlaying colours in this way. Sometimes I toy with returning to the brush as it is so much quicker than a tiny knife, but only a knife can glide over the canvas texture like this, leaving the troughs untouched. Time is very fragmented at the moment but I will keep grabbing what I can.... So many ideas fighting to be let out! I hope you enjoy this no name work, 76 x 76cm, oil over lilac acrylic. See more

05.01.2022 When Victoria opens again? Looks amazing

04.01.2022 Hi everyone I'm asking a favour here, if you could please vote for my entry as People's Choice, in the Regional Arts Award 2020. This years theme was Decadence. My work "Here's Looking At You Kid - Last Drinks" can now be seen on Flying Arts' website, along with a lot of great art. Vote here, even if not living in Australia : https://flyingarts.org.au//peoples-choice-voting-queensla/ Thanks! Artist Statement:... Heres looking at you, kid, Humphrey Bogart says to Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca, as he bids her farewell. Likewise, we are looking on as the last fragile habitat of the Black Throated Finch is wantonly destroyed in the name of short term gain by a few. What can be more decadent in a time of ecological crisis, than to frivolously erase a Queensland treasure, to squander our precious pristine environment, only to pointlessly extend a dying industry. A circular composition, we are first caught by her eyes, travel along wayward hair to a small stand of trees symbolising the Finches remaining shelter. Dropping, we discover this plucky little bird perched ever-so-lightly with us, then her scarf swings the return. Her expression is split: the right side a sweet smile of joy in the moment; the left side full of grim awareness of its brevity. See more

03.01.2022 Starting to come together now. Another couple of days work needed yet.

02.01.2022 All done. Just a small happy piece. Oil on canvas 36 x 36cm

01.01.2022 Good morning! Hope to see you at Samford today or tomorrow, between 10am and 3pm

01.01.2022 I've changed the stall around with new stock available. Hope to see you today til 4pm.

01.01.2022 And here is one of my own works on a dark wall. Not as dramatic but lets the light parts come forward and the background blend a little into the wall. I think it would look even better on a red background. This is 'Waiting' from the hand series. It is on a metallic copper base so changes with the light. 91 x 121cm.
