25.01.2022 This week, Annette travelled to Perth to tell the story of Chorus at the CircuitWest WA Showcase 2020. Quoting dance artist Sumer Addy, Annette talked about "the power for each individual to stand confidently alone amongst a sea of women. Each one helped and carried the other through the entire process. We all felt we could do it, we could fight for it... together. The idea of failing was never present." Nearly fourty men either participating or expressing interest in performing next year. A heap of media. A lot of invitations, a lot of hustling, and a lot of fun. Thank you to the Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre, Moora Performing Arts Centre, Goldfields Arts Centre and Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council for hosting us. Bring on the intensive residencies! 19.01.2022 " " Brenton got involved In our dance project, The Beauty Index, to raise funds for the Harvey Hockey Club. The club had been trying to get guys to come along for four or five weeks but no one was interested. "I was umming and ahhing. My brother was coming regardless. We put names in a hat and drew them out the first four names out, the guys all had bullshit excuses then I drew my name out!" Brenton found the start of our rehearsal week prett...y challenging trying to find his rhythm and dropping some old habits from being a swimmer, but by the third night he got used to it. "I was stressing about the week but its not that bad, there should be more of it!" Brenton found workshop leaders, Annette and Carl to always be encouraging, sending the guys in the right direction "it just makes it so much easier for someone with no background in the arts". "I've found working with Annette really cruisey I stuffed up good and proper today and didn't hear a thing I shouldn't be so hard on myself". Men, want to dance? Join The Beauty Index. We are looking for men in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Mandurah, Western Australia Moora, Western Australia Ravensthorpe, Western Australia. 06.01.2022 " " Jess came into our dance project, The Beauty Index, wanting to give back to the community, "There is so much happening in Harvey and this is a way to give something". When Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre Manager, David Marshall asked Jess to take part in the project, he felt that it was a way to come out from his comfort zone.... Jess didn't know many of the men who had signed up for the project. "I called one and said are you coming? He said - no Jess, this isn't my thing". But Jess was committed to the project and joined us for our one week of evening training. He told us that on Monday he was a bit reserved, but as the week went on, he found dancing to be a great form of release and started feeling more comfortable with performing. He also really enjoyed the chance to get to know the other men in the Harvey 'Manpack'. By Friday, Jess was in front of photographer, Haydn Jones, creating some powerful images to promote the project. Inspired to dance? It's not too late to join the project if you live in Kalgoorlie, Moora, Mandurah or Ravensthorpe. Go to https://annettecarmichael.com.au/past.../the-beauty-index/ for more details.

06.01.2022 Fear Strength Vulnerability Hope Beauty... The Beauty Index is a work that examines the power of beauty to preserve our humanity. Here are the first pictures from our photo shoot from the final stop of our regional taster workshop tour. We are so excited to be in Ravensthorpe, where we again provide the opportunity for local men to come together, explore and create. An amazing chance to get out of your comfort zone. This shoot was squeezed in late yesterday, racing against the setting sun following our drive from Kalgoorlie. We were so fortunate to have Paul join us for the shoot with Dene. We shot amongst Pauls crops and the results are pretty spectacular. 02.01.2022 ’ Kailen is a relative newcomer to Harvey who found out about the project the day before the residency rehearsals were due to begin. With a strong passion about men’s mental health and community connections, Kailen is going about trying to establish a safe space for service men and women to come heal on a farm in Harvey. The Beauty Index is a powerful work about the balance between fear and beauty a...nd about how to overcome. On closing out the week, we asked Kailen how he had found the week and rehearsing inside such a powerful work. The choreography has been on point and the week has been intensive Kailen told us. Kailen is passionate about the need for men to talk about their emotions and get out of their head. He described dancing or doing something that is creative as helping to flow the negative energy out. Kailen is open about his mental battles after returning from tours of duty in Afghanistan and the impact the rehearsals had on him personally. Getting to know this performance has helped lessen the load and the burden that I’d done something wrong and helped me further forgive myself. Thanks to the Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre for hosting us in Harvey, Western Australia. Photo by Haydn Jones.
