23.01.2022 Sometimes I am lucky enough to go to places like....The Kimberley! And better yet, spend time with Indigenous Rangers and Traditional Owners, in this case the Ngarinyin people of Wilinggin country. Here, some professionally shot imagery has helped their annual report come to life - images can go a very long way in telling the stories that matter.
23.01.2022 Thought I would share my series which was shortlisted in the Australian Photography Award's STORIES. My story was a very personal one - a response and expression of my eco-anxiety to the megafires and unrelenting drought that preceded them. These problems are not going away, and with summer only a few moths ago - can we really handle another natural disaster on top of the horror year the world has had? The time for change is now.
23.01.2022 A little snippet of video I recently shot for Bellarine Landcare. Due to the pandemic, an onsite event became impossible so they decided to put together some videos to showcase some fabulous work by landholders. Here's a teaser for their upcoming webinars - with more to come!
23.01.2022 I couldn't imagine our night skies without our magical flying foxes. Today in QLD they are being treated with cruelty and complete disregard for a keystone native species through what's known as a 'dispersal'. They are truly one of the world's most misunderstood species, but if want to thank any creature for pollinating our beautiful forests it's the flying foxes of Australia. Please take a moment (maybe grab a wine, it's Friday after all!) to watch my short on Australian Geographic - thanks! https://www.australiangeographic.com.au//grey-headed-flyi/
22.01.2022 If you haven't checked out it yet - I have a photo essay in the Guardian Australia from my time on Wilinggin Country in the Kimberley. The determination of traditional owners the Ngarinyin people, to stand on their own is a shining light in such uncertain times - click here to read all about it! https://www.theguardian.com//they-never-went-away-reclaimi
22.01.2022 It's always lovely when a client sends you hard copies of their publication with heaps of your images in it. This is the latest issue of Habitat, the Australian Conservation Foundation's newsletter. It includes the stories of bushfire survivors from along the coast among many other things. Let's not forget the horror summer Australia just had and the need for climate action - climate change also threats humanity (obviously), and we actually know how to prevent it! #climatechange #conservation #nature #climatecrisis #environment
22.01.2022 Getting 'Fish & chips' on a Friday night is embedded in the habits of Australian suburbia. You sit inside a steamy fluorescent lighting-flooded room with strangers staring at the menu overhead. During the pandemic this experience is very different. Wear a mask, wait outside and keep your distance. Melbourne is currently in its second wave and in stage 4 lockdown. It's tough and things start to get to you. Along this journey we start to discover how important these little rituals are.
21.01.2022 There's beauty in an urban winter still, even in lockdown...
21.01.2022 I would not have my job any other way than to photograph and film people from all corners of Australia & all walks of life who share one common goal - to care for and rehabilitate this beautiful country of ours. Just like Dick & Bob here! Get in touch for your next shoot or campaign!
19.01.2022 Earlier this year I worked on a multimedia piece for Trust for Nature about the wonderful people and organisations working to protect pockets of biodiversity along the Mornington Peninsula. It's a really special, diverse place. And now, the Shire of Mornington Peninsula is offering rate incentives for others to do the same, win win! Check out my piece here: https://youtu.be/4-uoP6XyPu0
19.01.2022 I am absolutely thrilled to have received an Honourable Mention in the International Photography Awardsfor my work on eco-anxiety, a project that started sometime before and then during, Australia's Black Summer. The loss of so much habitat and animals was devastating but also caused a great feeling of despair and anger at the government's lack of action on all things environment.

16.01.2022 Anyone catch ABC news breakfast yesterday? I was very chuffed to be included in the Guardian Australia's review of their favourite photo essays, mine being on the journey of the Ngarinyin people and their reclaiming of land and indigenous names. TV host Kathryn Robinson called this "some of the most beautifully captured indigenous pictures that I saw this year - worth repeating right!?! And huge thanks to the support of the Guardian Australia and Carly Earl, their amazing photo editor https://www.theguardian.com//they-never-went-away-reclaimi
16.01.2022 Time for some good news! Here's a photo essay following my time on Wilinggin Country in the Kimberley. An amazing place and wonderful people - please check it out! https://www.theguardian.com//they-never-went-away-reclaimi
15.01.2022 I want to talk about bats. Forget everything you think you know and start over. For the past year I have spent a lot of time staring up at bat colonies, speaking to bat people and well, just getting aquatinted with these amazing creatures. It has been a horror summer for them and the worst is yet to come. Bats, and in Victoria’s case grey headed flying foxes are one of the most persecuted and misunderstood species you could meet. But, we need them more than they need us. F...lying foxes provide a crucial (and free) service to our ecosystem by pollinating Australian native forest. They are simply flying mammals (the only mammal that can achieve true flight!) with an amazing evolutionary path, exceptional seeing and hearing abilities and an amusing way of chatting and squabbling with each other. Forget what the movies, rednecks and ill-informed tell you. You have more chance of being harmed in your car on the way to see a bat colony than being in one! And no, you cannot get COVID-19 from them, that virus occurred the minute human-kind messed with the natural world, not because of it. Every year we are losing tens of thousands of flying foxes to climate change-induced heatwaves and fires. They are our canary in the coalmine. Look into the eyes of a flying fox and you may get insight into how intelligent, special and beautiful they really are. And maybe, just leave them alone and let them get on with pollinating the Aussie bush, a place we can accept needs all the help it can get along with all the other animals who need it too. 15.01.2022 Last year I had the privilege of spending time with a journalist from Le Figaro Magazine (France) and Australian author and novelist Fiona Capp. Fiona's connection to the ocean and surfing lead to three books including the acclaimed memoir That Oceanic Feeling. It was so lovely spending time with her and her family down by both sides of the coast.
14.01.2022 Gayini means water and it's the land of the Nari Nari people. No surprise why it's called that - the land is fed by systems of rivers and wetlands sustaining the wildlife and those who live there. It's a truly magical place.
14.01.2022 OK, so getting around the country is tricky these days - but never fear! I have oodles of shots from all over the country. Whether it's people, places or creatures and great small - I may just have something for you. Please get in touch! www.annetteruzicka.com.au
13.01.2022 My latest newsletter is out! Just a wee rundown of what's been happening in my world and some possible solutions for your imagery needs in times of lockdown. Happy reading!
12.01.2022 Very honoured to be a finalist for the Perth Centre of Photography's CLIP award - stay tuned for the virtual exhibition in a new, immersive experience that everyone can enjoy. And a huge congrats to the other finalists!
11.01.2022 Very honoured to be a finalist the Australian Photography Awards - APA in the Portrait category. My image was an expression of my own eco-anxiety at Australia's environmental crisis - which all came to a head in the Black Summer of 2019-2020. As fires and heatwaves begin their onslaught, I hope this image speaks to people and empowers them to share their own grief and anxiety around these issues. (Or any issue for that matter!)
09.01.2022 The latest Landcare Annual Report is out including cover by yours truly. This edition highlights the people who suffered greatly after the Black Summer fires in East Gippsland and all the amazing work they have undertaken to restore the land and prepare for the next fire. It was a real privilege and honour to meet these people. https://landcareaustralia.org.au//2020AnnualReport_Printab
09.01.2022 things I see on my travels...
09.01.2022 Incredibly honoured to win a Silver place in the Budapest International Foto Awards for an image from the series 'One last look, before you go'. This work represents my sorrow at the bushfires that raged across Australia's landscape last summer. This is Snowy Mountain country in NSW - once a vast landscape of forest and life, But at the time of these photos it was barren, burnt out and changed forever. The two images together demonstrate a devastated landscape and other bushfire that was burning nearby - all captured within moments of each other. #ifotoawards
06.01.2022 The things you see when wandering about Derby, WA.
06.01.2022 What a treat it was to visit this amazing place!
05.01.2022 The wonderful birds of Derby, WA...
04.01.2022 I'm very proud that my images have been a part of this important piece on bats from the New York Times. They are possibly the most misunderstood and vilified species in the world. This explains why they shouldn't be. In short, bats are too important to lose and diseases are only a problem when we (humans) intrude upon bats in their habitats. It's time we respect and value what is left of the natural world. I always get a bit nervous about bat articles but this is worth a read. Oh & check out my pics! https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/11/opinion/covid-bats.html
04.01.2022 Holy moly! VERY surprised and VERY chuffed to be shortlisted for the Australian Photography Award's STORIES - congrats to all!!!
02.01.2022 This video piece now on Australian Geographic's website has been a labour of love for a long time. For one of my most favourite animals - the misunderstood but oh so special and unique, grey headed flying fox. This is an animal as Australian as vegemite, I can't imagine our night skies without them. I won't say any more in hope you will all watch and share around, thanks! https://www.australiangeographic.com.au//grey-headed-flyi/
01.01.2022 The National Bird Count is on - get to it!
01.01.2022 Anyone who knows me is well aware that I love to get outside! Now is the perfect time to get some footage for your current work, a new project or a webinar you may want to host. I can work alone in the field if need be and it doesnt take long to get some great footage for the work you continue to do! Please get in touch for any needs - be that some quick footage or a full multimedia project
