12.01.2022 Retirement is not just about money ... there are many other challenges, and Noel Whittaker addresses many things you may not have thought about. We all want to be comfortable in the autumn of our years!! Synopsis..... The fastest growing demographic in Australia are retirees, with the number of people over 75 expected to double within 10 years. Retirement is often touted as a worry free time but it's also a time full of unique challenges.... First is the money issue will there be enough money for a successful retirement, and what assets should you invest in. The rules regarding the age pension are continually changing what do you need to do to maximise it. Next is superannuation, an ever-changing landscape where the performance of your fund depends on the assets you choose. A major issue is estate planning what is the best way to handle the disposal of your assets in a tax effective way, and avoid the 17% death tax on the taxable component of your superannuation. Rising life expectancies mean the possibility of new relationships between retirement and death, but it also means one partner may suffer from dementia with all that entails. Of course, there's also the possibility of home care, and friction between siblings. Another major issue is whether you stay in the family home or downsize to another property, or even go to a retirement community. These are just a few of the major issues covered in the new book Retirement Made Simple by acclaimed financial expert Noel Whittaker, who has been writing about these issues for more than 35 years.

12.01.2022 Now in stock! Raynette Mitchell left city life and the corporate world behind 20 years ago when she moved to the Noosa hinterland, on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia. Once there, she learned to relax and to enjoy the lifestyle this beautiful place had to offer. The slower pace allowed her more time to paint and write. She has always loved the English language and composition and belongs to several Writers’ Groups. Her favourite genre is Women’s Contemporary Fiction stories about the complexities of relationships and how people deal with life, in good times and in bad. Among her favourite authors are Marian Keyes, Jodi Picoult, Susan Howatch, but she also loves reading some of the classic authors of our time Winston Graham, John Irving, Ken Follett, John O’Hara.

Tickets will be available on MONDAY 14th SEPTEMBER from around midday - book on The J website - www.thej.com.au or phone the box office on 5329 6560. We cannot take any bookings at the shop.

10.01.2022 What a week of fabulous books!! This is my next read. The Living Sea of Waking Dreams is an ember storm of a novel. This is Booker Prize-winning novelist Richard Flanagan at his most movingand astonishingbest. In a world of perennial fire and growing extinctions, Anna’s aged mother is dyingif her three children would just allow it. Condemned by their pity to living she increasingly escapes through her hospital window into visions of horror and delight.... When Anna’s finger vanishes and a few months later her knee disappears, Anna too feels the pull of the window. She begins to see that all around her others are similarly vanishing, but no one else notices. All Anna can do is keep her mother alive. But the window keeps opening wider, taking Anna and the reader ever deeper into a strangely beautiful story about hope and love and orange-bellied parrots.

10.01.2022 This is one of the most beautiful, lyrical novels I have read in many years. It is a fictionalized story of the author’s mother, who was . Born to a woman as telling as a dream and to a man who was a Cherokee, a moonshiner and a mythmaker. The novel is set in the Appalachian Mountains of Ohio and revolves around Betty, the sixth child of eight, in a family life full of struggle, violence and racism. The cruelty visited upon Betty and her family is heartbreaking and trag...ic, but within the same story is an incredible beauty a beauty of language, of landscape, of music and most importantly, of stories. Betty has an immeasurable love for her family, and particularly her Cherokee father, whose stories of the past help her to find her own place in the world, ignite her imagination and give her a much needed escape from the brutality of life. Unforgettable and highly recommended. See more

09.01.2022 MEET AND CHAT WITH SARAH PYE - conservationist, writer, teacher and recently doctor! Sarah is a seriously impressive lady - come and chat with her about her book and her amazing efforts to help save this unique and beautiful animal. SATURDAY from 10am until midday... Australian author Sarah Pye first visited Borneo in 2012, ostensibly to see orangutans in the wild. Sun bears weren’t even on her radar. When she met Dr Wong Siew Te and asked what she could do to help him save a species, he replied do what you do best. Those five powerful words sparked a seven-years journey which is weaved through the narrative, a Doctor of Creative Arts project, and an enduring relationship between the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. In Asia, adult sun bears are poached for body parts which are thought to have medicinal properties. Many orphaned cubs, with their small size and endearing features, are kept illegally as pets. Malaysian ecologist Dr Wong Siew Te, or ‘papa bear’, has dedicated his life to saving the world’s smallest bear from extinction. In this heartwarming story, Wong’s love of animals leads him to pursue an unconventional, sometimes dangerous career. It takes him from Malaysia to Taiwan, where he studies animal husbandry; to Montana, where he learns to trap grizzly bears; and on to Borneo to research bears in the dense rainforest. Wong struggles to raise funds to create a unique rescue centre for sun bears, and in 2017 he is acknowledged as a CNN Heroproving one person can make a difference. Australian author Sarah Pye takes readers on a journey of discovery, introducing individual sun bears she has come to know: Natalie, who learns to survive without her mother; Bongkud, who is struck by lightning; Gutuk, who is too scared to go outside; and Debbie, who grabs her chance at freedom. Saving Sun Bears is Wong’s storyand theirs.

09.01.2022 Honeybee is available on Monday. It's a glorious new novel from the author of JASPER JONES.

08.01.2022 Dingo Bold is a thought-provoking exploration of the relationship between people and dingoes. At its heart is Rowena Lennox's encounter with a dingo on the beach on K’gari (Fraser Island), a young male she nicknames Bold. Struck by this experience, and by the intense, often polarised opinions expressed in public conversations about dingo conservation and control, she sets out to understand the complex relationship between humans and dingoes. Weaving together ecological data, ...interviews with people connected personally and professionally with K’gari’s dingoes, and Lennox's expansive reading of literary, historical and scientific accounts, Dingo Bold considers what we know about the history of relations between dingoes and humans, and what preconceptions shape our attitudes today. Do we see dingoes as native wildlife or feral dogs? Wild or domesticated animals? A tourist attraction or a threat? And how do our answers to these questions shape our interactions with them? Dingo Bold is both a moving memoir of love and loss through Lennox's observations of the natural world and an important contribution to wider conversations about conservation and animal welfare. "Combining natural history, Indigenous culture, memoir, and environmental politics, this is an elegantly written and affectionate tribute to Australia's most maligned and least understood native animal." Jacqueline Kent "Fuelled by empathy, curiosity and passion, and informed by research, data and observation, this moving and compelling book speaks to the heart and to the head. Rowena Lennox poses questions about our relationship with dingoes and our role in the natural world that are as bold and lively as her subject." Debra Adelaide

06.01.2022 NOW IN STOCK! The brand new book from Richard Fidler - we've been waiting for this one!!! Beloved ABC broadcaster and bestselling author of Ghost Empire and Saga Land, Richard Fidler is back with a personally curated history of the magical city that is Prague.... In 1989, Richard Fidler was living in London as part of the provocative Australian comedy trio The Doug Anthony All Stars when revolution broke out across Europe. Excited by this galvanising historic, human, moment, he travelled to Prague, where a decrepit police state was being overthrown by crowds of ecstatic citizens. His experience of the Velvet Revolution never let go of him. Thirty years later Fidler returns to Prague to uncover the glorious and grotesque history of Europe's most instagrammed and uncanny city: a jumble of gothic towers, baroque palaces and zig-zag lanes that has survived plagues, pogroms, Nazi terror and Soviet tanks. Founded in the ninth Century, Prague gave the world the golem, the robot, and the world's biggest statue of Stalin, a behemoth that killed almost everyone who touched it. Fidler tells the story of the reclusive emperor who brought the world's most brilliant minds to Prague Castle to uncover the occult secrets of the universe. He explores the Black Palace, the wartime headquarters of the Nazi SS, and he meets victims of the communist secret police. Reaching back into Prague's mythic past, he finds the city's founder, the pagan priestess Libussa who prophesised: I see a city whose glory will touch the stars. Following the story of Prague from its origins in medieval darkness to its uncertain present, Fidler does what he does so well - curates an absolutely engaging and compelling history of a place. You will learn things you never knew, with a tour guide who is erudite, inquisitive, and the best storyteller you could have as your companion.

02.01.2022 RED PILL by Hari Kunzru (review by Erin Adam) Slowing and speeding along with the jumbled, grasping thoughts of the narrator’s mind, Red Pill is a dive into a modern unhinged psyche. A New York writer is offered a residency at a Berlin based writing institute, and decides to leave his wife and young daughter behind ... to focus on his work for three months in the deep German winter. When he arrives he finds less a writer’s solitude than a vast communal experiment in academic creativity and finds he is unable to work. Growing more introverted as he spurns the retreats rules, he finds himself holed up in his bedroom avoiding social contact, shovelling cold Chinese food and whisky into his mouth and binge watching an ultraviolent cop show called Blue Lives. As he finds more of his time consumed by the show and his long placid walks along a frozen lake in which a poet committed suicide a century earlier, he becomes obsessed with clues that he is being watched. His fears are furthered by the confessions of a cleaner at the retreat who was forced to spy for the East German regime she grew up under, and one night he breaks out and finds himself at a party where he happens to meet the creator of Blue Lives. The creator rebuffs him at first but soon takes an intense interest in him, causing him to fall down a rabbit hole of racist conspiracy theories, distrust, and complete metal ruin. This book sweeps the reader along on a ride of radicalisation and rejection and their consequences for both society and the individuals involved. At times written plainly then devolving into romanticism and fervour as he digs deeper into the subcultures he has delved into, Red Pill is very much a book written for the current times and serves as a warning to those susceptible to these lines of thought. 02.01.2022 Looking for something intriguing to read? this could be it. FISHER OF SOULS is the new novel from local author Chris Cantor. Surviving the Great Plague of 1348-1350, Abbot Stephen’s monks pursue spiritual purity by projecting their sins into Torminster Abbey’s stone grotesques. Purity proves elusive as the stones mysteriously appear to respond in kind. With the abbey in chaos, Abbot Stephen in desperation appeals to Satan, the Fisher of Souls. Six centuries later in Tormins...ter Hospital, the decrepit former abbey, Matilda a crafty cleaner and Horace an elderly psychotic patient, seem to care for patients more effectively than the medical staff. Taking curiously troubled young Celeste under their wings, the past meets the present and the Fisher of Souls reawakens. In this carefully researched allegorical story, journey between the dark mystifying 14th century abbey and the more contemporary psychiatric hospital with its delightful characters. Fisher of Souls is a provocative, disturbing, but humorous psychological tale. Its satirical theme of demonising others resonates loudly with many conflicts of today. Chris Cantor, psychiatrist, specialising in suicide prevention and posttraumatic stress disorder, worked in Devon, England, the story's setting, before moving to Australia.

01.01.2022 SON OF THE BRUSH - TIM OLSEN A frank and revealing memoir by the son of Australia's greatest living painter. Tim Olsen is the son of arguably Australia's greatest living artist, Dr John Olsen. Son of the Brush is his fascinating, candid memoir of what it was like to grow up in the shadow of artistic genius, with all its wonder, excitement and bitter disappointments.... Tim's childhood was dominated by his father's work, which took the family to Europe and to communities around Australia as John sought inspiration and artistic fellowship. Wine, food, conversation and the emerging sexual freedom of the 1960s wove a pattern of life for the family. It was both the best and worst of childhoods, filled with vibrancy and stimulation, yet fraught with anxiety and eventual sadness as John separated from Tim's mother Valerie and moved away from the family. The course of Tim's life has been set by the experiences of his childhood, and by the passion for art he inherited from both his parents (his mother was an acclaimed painter in her own right). His life has always been about art, although he has followed a different path from his parents. Having overcome and recovered from addiction, Tim is today one of Australia's most respected gallery owners, with a knowledge of art and artists forged from what is literally a lifetime immersed in the art world. Son of the Brush is a memoir about a son and his father, and what it takes to forge your own identity and chart your own course in life, but it is also about the wider world of art, artists and the joy, inspiration and sacrifices of the creative life. Author bio: Tim Olsen is one of Australia's most recognised and respected art identities and successful gallery owners. Son of Australia's national living treasure, artist Dr John Olsen, A.O. O.B.E., Olsen was born into a life of modern and contemporary art. He established his own Gallery in 1993, which has rapidly expanded to become one of Sydney's leading galleries today, marking his contribution and commitment to the Australian art scene. He not only has supported the careers of many of Australia's leading established artists but also has nurtured the creative lives of many emerging artists who can presently include themselves as being very much part of the art establishment today. Tim has been a foundation member of the AGNSW for over 15 years and is dedicated to its restoration department and also a major donor and benefactor to the MCA. He has been a patron of the King's School Art Prize for over twenty-five years and since 2000, sponsored the annual Tim Olsen Drawing Prize at UNSW, School of art and design. He is on the foundation board of the University of New South Wales, and on the board of the National Art School in East Sydney.
