03.01.2022 Over the weekend my beautiful burmese boy Fudge, was rushed to emergency due to difficulty breathing. . The emergency pet hospital put him straight into an oxygen tank & kept him overnight to perform various tests. . Let me backtrack for a bit. Fudge spent the first few years of his life in and out of veterinary clinics, being poked and prodded while his skin developed a large lesion that looked like something from a horror movie. No vet could tell me what it was until Decemb...er 2013 when Fudge was diagnosed with Feline Cutaneous Asthenia (known in humans as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome). . This rare genetic disorder is characterised by deficient levels of collagen causing the skin and ligaments to lose elasticity. The skin becomes soft, delicate, thin & susceptible to injury. Skin bruising & tearing is common, leaving gaping wounds that cause large scars. . Fudge’s wounds covered half his back. The bad wound took over a year to heal, with daily intensive care of the area, protecting him with clothing & administering various medications and ointments. He hasn’t had another one since, but his scars are extensive and flare up regularly. . So when the vet called with the test results, I was expecting her to tell me Fudge has a cold or blocked nose. How wrong I was. The results from his tests were devastating: 1. Lungs: Bronchitis & a partially collapsed lung 2. Digestive System: Dilated oesophagus & paralysis of the intestines and colon 3. Joints: partial dislocation of both hips 4. Heart: gallop rhythm detected possibly a valve not functioning properly. Needs further tests. . I’m not yet sure of his prognosis nor treatment options, I’ll find out on Friday. What I do know is that Fudge is really sick and all this, is due to the FCA. . So therefore I have created an insta profile for Fudge to raise awareness in Australia about Feline Cutaneous Asthenia. .
